Results and Recap of the 2001 Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby.

Derby! Derby! That is all that has been on our minds for weeks. We can take a deep breath and relax now that we have almost put a closure on this years Derby. Before we do there are many to thank for its great success. The most important outcome of the 2001 Derby is the funding of the Marina del Rey Youth Fishing Program, (so far we have 36 confirmed trips this summer, with more being planned, accommodating 1200 youths) the Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Monica and Venice, and the Girl Scouts. In addition, we provide funds to the Ocean Resources Enhancement Project, United Anglers and the American Sportfishing Association to name a few.

This Derby enables many kids to go fishing! Thank you for helping to make this a reality for many needy youth!

ESTEEMED DERBY SPONSORS

We all realize the tremendous success of the Marina del Rey Anglers 2001 Halibut Derby was due to the generosity of our Sponsors who donated a great quantity of quality prizes.  The abundance of door prizes and raffle prizes accumulated for the Derby is one of the main attractions to the anglers who participate year after year.  Our way of thanking our Sponsors is to encourage you to patronize their brands, retail stores, hotels, and services, during the Derby we were displaying their banners and publishing their logo in our brochure and flyers.  Our sponsors listed below have generously donated quality merchandise and services to help the Derby raise funds. Please support them as they have so generously supported our derby year after year.

Dear Sponsors:
We look forward to your participation and support again in our 28th Annual Halibut derby in 2002.

Also in order is a tremendous THANK YOU to ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS.

All of the printing, mailing, hours and hours of computer time, distributing flyers and brochures to tackle shops and parking lots, marketing, advertising, organizing meetings, picking up prizes, recording and keeping track of everything. This was all done by volunteers.  Most were members of Marina del Rey Anglers, their family, friends and some that just volunteered to help. It is amazing how much stamina a group has when they are working together for a worthwhile project. The Derby committee contacts the club members and others as early as July or August for the following year's Spring Derby. It takes that much time to put all the pieces together. Some volunteers are proficient at one thing, some at another; so many skills are sorted out and utilized to their greatest advantage.

Before even thinking of next years Derby, we are sending out this brochure to everyone who fished the 2001 Derby, and to many who did not fish.  This Brochure is going to all the Sponsors and Volunteers who helped make this years' Derby a banner year.  If you do not find your name somewhere in this booklet, it does not mean you did not participate, but that we goofed.  Let us know and we will make it up to you.

It is risky to name the volunteers because it is almost inevitable that someone's name will inadvertently be omitted, but here goes: The Derby co-chairmen team consisted of Ken Raymond, Bob Kissling, and Cesar Chavez, all of whom did a superb job.  The second tier included Ed and Angie Syp, Victor and Melanie Jedlicka, Greg and Dora Belda, Gillian Johnson, Frank McGill, Jerry Napolitano, Michelle Kaufman, Ken Brock, Wayne Pecot, Dick Schaffer, Paul and LaVerne Simon, Streeter Turner, and Allen and Marilyn Ventura.  Also essential to the success of the Derby were, Harold Cabrera, Ken and Linda Feldman, Dick Bublitz, Mike and Kim Cooley, Bob and Joan Godfrey, Ted Haddad, Bobby Martinez, David Napolitano, Barbara Raymond, John Romanak, Phil Samuels, Larry Silver, Richard Somers, Jack Yoches, Joanne Shea, Ken and Linda Feldman, Basil Raymond, Monica Schoch, and the Belda daughters and friends.

A special thanks goes to Del Hanks, Director of the Boy Scouts Pardee Seascout Base, who not only made a group of Girl Scouts available at the weigh-in (to transport the halibut from the boats to the weigh-in site), but also devoted some of his own time to help with the physical and clerical jobs that needed attention.  The on-going relationship between the MDR Anglers and the Boy Scouts is tremendously valuable to the club's philanthropic activities. Also a special thank you to all the park officials, beach and harbor personnel who helped with the proper permits and paper work.

The Crews of the Sportfishing boats, "Betty O" and "Tortuga", captained by Mike Reinsch and Ricky Carvajal, are to be commended for enhancing the Derby.  They each carried a full passenger load of Derby entrants for the two days and were successful in finding good halibut fishing for their clients. Among them was the Youth Division Second Place Winner, Daniel Moenart, and the Adult Competition Fourth Place Winner, Kim Young Sun.

Thank You!

Without the dedicated work of the volunteers
this event would not happen!

Some Special Efforts need extra recognition

WHAT ABOUT THAT CUSTOM KNIFE?

Special Thanks to Frank McGill who donated the hand made custom knife, which he spends many hours fashioning it so that no two are alike.  Frank has made a knife for the Derby every year since we can all remember.  Its' place in the Derby has become a custom.  Thanks to Frank once again!

HOW ABOUT BAIT??

The cooperation of the bait docks was outstanding.  It is no mean task to have sufficient cured bait for 350 boats all requiring bait at approximately the same time within a two-day period.  Del Rey Bait Dock and In-Seine Bait Dock came through with flying colors.  They handled the crowds efficiently and pleasantly and got the Derby rolling at daybreak both days and all the boats were well stocked with great sardines, anchovies, and a few brown bait.  Kudos to Larry Derr, Rick Oefinger, and the crews at the two bait docks.

Halibut Derby News

THE KEN BROCK STORY

How one angler managed to be on the top three teams in the team competition?  Someone jokingly stated that it was not Ken Brock's fishing prowess but his expert choice of teammates.  Well, if the truth were known, to succeed in being on three winning teams, you must be a damn good angler.  You have to catch at least one good-sized fish each day.  Ken did that.  He weighed in a 12.4 lb. fish one-day and 12.06 on the next.  His partner on the first place team, Greg Belda weighed in 21.66 and 13.65.  Both Brock and Belda are long time members of Marina del Rey Anglers.

Brock's partner on the second place team was George Castro, who won first place in the individual competition.  Castro's winning 26.45 lb. fish added greatly to the team's success.  It also offset Castro's second fish for team scoring which was 7.79 lbs.  The third place team was comprised of Brock and Peter Brown who weighed in 13.45 and 10.19.  The three top winning teams shared the $4,000 team Jackpot.

IGFA Record Halibut in Santa Monica Bay

In September of 2000, Victor Jedlicka, a MDR Anglers member, won an IGFA eight-pound line class world record for a 40 lb. 9 oz. halibut, which he caught while fishing on Harold Cabrera's boat.  Keep it up, Harold.  You are responsible for many trophy catches.

WINNERS IN THE INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION
and their trips to Alaska and Mexico

George Castro            First Place  26.45 lbs.      40.75 inches

George Castro won a fully paid trip for two people to Dog Fish Bay Fishing Lodge, south of Homer, Alaska with airfare provided from LAX to and from Anchorage.  If the winner chooses, the Derby will provide him with a rental car to drive to Homer.  It is a spectacular part of the world and from a car they will see glaciers, a beautiful coastline and an assortment of wild life.  DOG FISH BAY LODGE will fly the winner's party from Homer to the lodge.  Salt-water fishing covers the assortment available in Alaska--halibut, lingcod, and various species of salmon.   The fishing lodge has fresh water angling on their own property--trout and Dolly Varden.  The winner has four days fishing to experience it all.  The lodge will pack and freeze the winner's catch and fly them back to Homer, to drive or fly to Anchorage.

Jim Burdette              Second Place     25.57 lbs.     39.25 inches

Jim Burdette's prize was a fully paid trip for two people to Mazatlan on the pacific shore of mainland Mexico.  THE INN AT MAZATLAN, one of Mexico's finest, has donated five days and four nights lodging.    Mazatlan is a lively, Metropolitan City, offering great food and entertainment.  Complete meals for five days are funded by the Derby.   Mazatlan is famous for its marlin and sailfish.   Several other varieties including dorado, yellowtail, pargo, snapper, jacks and other gamefish are usually plentiful.  Fishing is donated by BILL HEMPELS STARFLEET SPORTFISHING a first class landing with some of the best-equipped diesel sportfishers in Mexico.  The Derby will provide airline tickets as soon as the Jim sets his date.

Jim Matsukas            Third Place      24.78 lbs.     39 inches

Jim Matsukas' prize is another fully paid trip for two people to---you guessed it---Mazatlan.  The accommodations are at EL CID YACHT CLUB HOTEL.  The fishing is from GERONIMOS ARIES SPORTFISHING FLEET, famous for its prestigious annual marlin tournaments.  The many varieties of fish in the Pacific Ocean off Mazatlan make this an exciting fishing adventure.  The stay in Mazatlan is four nights and five days.  The Derby provides the winner with five day's meals, giving his party the chance to experience the variety of excellent food available in Mazatlan.  Air tickets will be given to Jim when he selects the dates for his trip.

Kim Young Sun     Fourth Place     24.58 lbs.     39.75 inches

Kim Young Sun and another person will enjoy the other side of the Sea of Cortez on Mexico's East Cape.  The same marlin, sailfish, dorado and yellowtail are there and it has been called the Roosterfish capital of the world.  Many, because of its dedication to fishing, the hotel and its great food prefer HOTEL PUNTA COLORADA to others in the East Cape. Three days on the water there can be very productive.  Airline tickets will be provided when the winner has made his reservations, the catch will be frozen and packed for the trip home.  The hotel will transport the winner's party to and from the airport.

Jim Williams              Fifth Place       23.75 lbs.     40 inches

Jim Williams has won four nights and five days lodging for two at HOTEL LAS ROCAS in Rosarito Beach, Baja California, Mexico.  This first class resort is about 20 miles from Ensenada where SERGIO’S SPORTFISHING will provide fishing.  Transportation to Rosarito is not provided with this prize package but it is an easy, beautiful drive from San Diego on a smooth, toll road.  The Derby provides funds for the tolls and five day’s meals.  Fishing out of Ensenada is famous for its proximity to a variety of trophy fish.  Two days on the water are included with the prize.

SIXTH TO FIFTEENTH PLACE WINNERS (and the winners of the loot.)

Sixth Place -- Dave Baldwin won with 23.61 lbs. 40 inches, for which he was awarded a trophy, a 787 Calstar Custom rod donated by Calstar, wrapped by Ken Brock, and a Penn 535 reel donated by Boater's World.

Fourteenth Place -- Greg Belda won with 21.66 lbs. 36 inches, for which he was awarded a trophy, a Penn PowerStick rod and a Penn 535 reel, both donated by Boater's World.  Belda's name was engraved on the perpetual trophy for the heaviest halibut caught by a member of Marina del Rey Anglers.  The 21.66-lb. fish also helped him win first place in the team competition.

Fifteenth Place -- Chris Jorda won with 19.9 lbs. 38.5 inches, for which he was awarded a trophy, a Penn PowerStick rod and a Penn 535 reel, both donated by Boater's World.

WOMAN'S TROPHY

And how Harold Cabrera keeps his name in the newspaper.

Lisa Lohmeyer won the Woman's Trophy with 18.48 lbs., 36 inches for which she was awarded a beautiful custom ring--a cluster of pearls on a gold setting, designed and donated for this Halibut Derby by Lord of the Rings, a first-time sponsor.  Her catch was made while fishing on the boat of her grandfather, Harold Cabrera, who won the Individual Derby Competition in 1999.  Another of Harold's granddaughters was among the youth winners in the 2000 Derby.

See Lisa and her Prize!

TEAMS

Anglers who signed up for the Derby were allowed to be on six teams.  Team entry costs an extra $15.00 per team per entrant, but the rewards are worth it.  The winning team was awarded $2,000, second place $1200 and third place $800.  The team scoring system is designed so that the one heaviest fish that wins the individual competition does not necessarily win the team competition.  It is necessary for each team member to catch one good-sized fish each day for the team to be among the winners.  Catching two on one day or only the biggest fish on one day will not do it.
