Spain's History

The Moors of North Africa

Spain was ruled by the Moors of North Africa in the early AD 700s.  In the 1400s and 1500s, it became one of the richest and most powerful countries in Europe.

Christopher Colombus

Explorer Christopher Colombus set sail from Spain in 1492.  His voyage was followed by the Spanish conquest of parts of North and South America.  After wars with other European countries, Spain lost some of its power in the 1600s.

General Franco

After the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), General Franco ruled the country until his death in 1975.  During his reign, he kept Spain apart from the rest of Europe.

Elections

In 1977, King Juan Carlos 1 became head of state and elections were held.  Spain joined the European Union (EU) in 1986.
