10,080 Minutes Later

What exactly do we mean by 10,080 minutes later? Well, it's a small blurb about what we do at each meeting. The meetings are weekly, or 10,080 minutes apart. Read below about what we did at each meeting!

Meeting #1- October 12, 2004 Intro to Media Activism
The first club meeting this year was a huge success. We had a large turnout-- alot of freshmen. After introductions, we put the word "Media" on the blackboard and passed out the chalk. (oh, chalk...) Everyone went up to the board and wrote down what they associated with that word. Sara circled everything on the board and add to it-things pertinent to our club, what we do, what we will do, what we have done. Then, we talked briefly, answering the questions;
What are some examples of media? What does being literate in the media mean? What does being active in the media mean? What is media activism? Why is it so important for us to be active using media? What is democracy in the media? Should everyone have a say? Why? Is media democratic the way you see it now? There are so many branches to media activism (which have all been pointed out so well)

We also watched a clip of "Outfoxed" and talked about a few projects we wanted to get started on right away, since the presidential election is fast approaching. The club split into 2 groups, each one received an info packet to read and a short task.

a) What issues in the presidential election are you particularly interested in? One group today will start brainstorming ideas for a Public Service Announcement which we will tape next Tuesday.

b) One type of media that everyone overlooked when we listed media types is "Guerrilla Theater". Jeff Stark from the Guerrilla Theater group "The Madagascar Institute" is coming in NEXT MONDAY to speak to us. He will talk to us about what his group does and then we can decide if we want to run any sort of campaign to express views about issues important to us. Check out www.madagascarinstitute.com, or www.nonsensenyc.com

Meeting #2- October 19, 2004-PSA Planning and Guerrilla Theater
Jeff Stark from the Madagascar institute came to talk to us on Monday. He really inspired us to brainstorm our own guerrilla theater campaigns. We watched clips of work that his group had done, talked about the purpose of guerrilla theater, and how to pull it all off. We even started brainstorming ideas for our own projects. During the tuesday meeting, we broke into our groups again and worked on the PSA taping (about abortion and a woman's right to choose) with the Guerrilla stuff. The first guerrilla campaign-- blowing bubbles in the hallways on friday. Check out the Current Projects section for all of the guerrilla theater ideas.

Meeting #3- October 26, 2004- Advertising
We became marketers and advertisers today, as we watched and analyzed commercials and then made our own-- using conventional advertising techniques to guide us. Each team randomly chose a product to sell, an advertising technique and an age group. Created commercials ranged from an Efferdent ad starring Joan Rivers, to a spot selling a Destiny's Child CD to teen boys using science and statistics. We also talked about the difference between a commercial and a PSA. Guerrilla theater #2, playing beachball as republicans, next Monday!

Note: No meeting November 2 (election day). Adam, Ben and Adria will be leading the November 9 meeting...
