ARTICLE 1: Name
The name of the organization shall be the University of Calgary Medical Journalism Club, hereinafter reffered to as The Medical Journalism Club.
ARTICLE 1: Mission
The formation of a medical journalism club at the University of Calgary is based on two separate objectives.
The first stems from the increase in medical science research conducted at the University, which has lead to a greater demand for the communications department to publicize research objectives and results. Currently, The University of Calgary Gazette publishes a bi-monthly research page that consists of two University of Calgary research efforts. This appears to be the only platform for public communications in medical research. Accordingly, the build-up of medical stories greatly outweighs the outlets for public education.
The second objective stems from a student perspective. A large number of students at the University of Calgary have an interest in pursuing careers in the medical sciences. For these students, a major component of meeting their career goals should include both identifying the major areas of research in the medical sciences, and interacting with medical researchers and staff in an attempt to broaden their horizons in the medical field while gaining valuable interview skills and writing experience they will likely not recieve in their regular undergraduate curriculum.
It is to address both of these demands that the foundation of a medical journalism club is warranted for the fall of the year 2000.
ARTICLE 3: Membership
Although the target audience for this club is prospective medical students, active medical students, graduate students in the medical sciences and medical researchers, The Medical Journalism Club is an unlimited club that encourages participation of undergraduate and graduate students from all faculties and disciplines.
Membership may be obtained by paying a membership fee of $5.00, renewable annually. At all times, The Medical Journalism Club will have a minimum of 20 members, 2/3 of whom are active members of the students union.
ARTICLE 4: Students Union
The Medical Journalism Club acknowledges and will abide by the Students Union by-laws and policies unless otherwise approved by the club committee. We are aware that The Medical Journalism Club will no longer remain a Students Union club if a by-law of policy is contravened without club committee ratification.
