February 1, 1946 (Fri)
It was very warm today - almost like spring. I made A- on my test in Health the other day. We didn't have our test in Shorthand today instead we did some filing. I made 62 wpm and 87% accuracy in Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch then Evelyn and I went to work. Got there about 7 after 1. Miss McCrory and Miss O'Rourke neither one were in this afternoon so Dorothy and I didn't do much work - natch. I got home from work about 6. Dot and Bob were here for supper I went to the NS -SS (Civil War game) with Nancy, Donna Lou, Evelyn, Jane Hille and Wilma Krueger. We lost 31 - 28. Pudge and Pat were there too. Paul and Bill also were with us. After the game Paul, Nancy, Bill and I went to Brooks and got something to eat then took Bill home (he had to go to work) and then Nancy home and then Paul brought me home about 11. Ray, Levon, Dot and Bob were still here. We played poker till 2 o'clock. I lost over a dollar. Got to bed about 2:30.
February 2, 1946 (Sat)
I finally started to menustrate today. Its been 55 days. That's the longest I've ever gone. Dr. Conley came out about 10:30 and I felt better after that. I slept a great deal of the time today and also read Life and Companion Magazines and some more of "Main Street". Today is Groundhog's day and then groundhog saw his shodow so that means 6 more weeks of cold weather (so they say). Dot sent a bunch of snapshots taken on the day of the wedding over for me today with Margaret and Jess. Margaret bought some chocolate bits today so that means I'll have some Toll-house cookies now. I wonder why Paul took Nancy home last night before he brought me home. I bet Janet wishes she had gone to the game last night. We certainly had a lot of fun with them last night. I didn't get up all day.
February 3, 1946 (Sun)
I didn't get up till about ten. Dad was already up getting breakfast. He also put the dinner on and we did the dishes. I started to bake some chocolate chip cookies then. Mother finally got up - she was really surprised at Dad and I. Today I just read the newpapers and some more of "Main Street", did my Shorthand, listened to the radio and enbroidered. I guess Dot and Bob are going to buy Christman's other farm and build a new house on it and all. They are rather excited about it. I know I would be - especially about a new house. I called Betty G. this afternoon, but she wasn't home. I washed my hair today too. Well, its 10:30 so good-night now.
February 4, 1946 (Mon)
It rained today. During homerooms the Seniors went to the auditorium and got tickets to sell for the Senior Play. I got 5 Reserve and 5 General. We had a test in Shorthand but I don't know what I made. We had 2 tests in Typing - don't know what I made on those either. Evelyn wasn't in school this morning so Donna Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria then I went to work. Got there at 1. Evelyn was at work this afternoon. I took some dictation from Miss McCrory, transcribed it, did some other typing, filing etc. Bernice Bridges, Dwight's cousin, came in (she works at LL too) and I talked to her for awhile. Janet and I went downtown afterwards and I bought a new pair of saddle oxfords - neat. This evening I studied shorthand, listened to radio and read some more of "Main Street". Its about 10:30 now.
February 5, 1946 (Tues)
It rained again today. We had a test in Health. In homeroom we are going to send a spray for Kathleen's Messerschmidt's father who died yeaterday. We had 5 minute dictations in Shhd and then we were supposed to transcribe them in Typing, but instead I typed a letter to Jackie. Evelyn, Donna Lou and I ate lunch in the cafeteria and then went to LL. Got there at one. I took some dictation today, transcribed it, typed and filed. Janet and I took a roll of film to Howards for Margaret after work. I got home about six. I ate supper and got cleaned up and went to Jobs Daughters. We had an intiation tonight. It was over about 10. Then Dolores Perry, Betty Lou and I went down to the Hobby House. I got home about a quarter of 11 and in bed about 11:30.
February 6, 1946 (Wed)
It was colder out today. This weather ~ very very changeable. I finally made my 100 words per minute - perfect transcription in shorthand. I did some Typing for Mrs. Chapman 4 th period - took me all period. Evelyn, Donna Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria and Evelyn and I got to work at one again today. I did about the same things I have been doing at work. I like it more all the time. Anna May Hultz is going to start working there tomorrow. After work Evelyn, Janet and I went downtown. We had more darn fun in a hat shop - I laughed till I cried. This evening I studied my Shorthand and read "Main Street." Betty Greenwood called me - gosh, it was good to hear from her. I got to bed about 10.
February 7, 1946 (Thurs)
It was awfully cold today. We got our tests back in Health - I made A on mine. We had a test in Shorthand. I made 95 and 100 on it. We had 2 typing tests in Typing and as usual I did terrible. I did make 59 on one. Evelyn, Donna Lou, and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We got to LL at 1 again - we're getting good. Anna May is working in the same department Evelyn is. I typed and filed. I only worked two hours - till 3 because I had to go back to North Side for SPC. I got there about 3:20. The meeting was very short - was over by a quarter after 4. It seemed funny but good to get home at 4:30. This evening I studied my Health for a test tomorrow and finished reading "Main Street". I took my shower and its a quarter of 11 now. Night!
February 8, 1946 (Fri)
It was much warmer again today. We had a test in Health over everything we've had this semester. Just dictation in Shhd. and typing tests in Typing - I just can't seem to type in Typing aanymore. Donna Lou, Evelyn, Anna May, and I ate lunch in cafeteria then Evelyn, Anna May and I went to work - got there at one. We didn't work very hard this afternoon - in fact after 3 I typed a letter to Dwight. Miss McCrory brought Dorothy and I a pound of candy corn so we talked and ate that most of the time. An FBI man came in this afternoon. Mom and Dad picked me up after work and took me to the dentist- my teeth are still all right. Bob went to Detroit to see about a car so Dot stayed here all night. Dot and I talked till after midnight.
February 9, 1946 (Sat)
Dot woke me up about 7, but I went back to sleep. About 8 Dot and Marjorie pulled me out of bed. I didn't do much of anything today because Dot and I took care of David, Marjorie and Jimmie. Dot and I did clean out some of the dresser drawers. This afternoon Dot and I cracked walnuts for some cupcakes Mother baked and some fudge I made. I got a letter from Jackie today. Bob called about 8 so Dot went home. There was the cutest 6 - room house and plans in this evening - I'm going to cut it out- its just the sort of house I want. This evening I washed, took my shower and went to bed about 10:30. Ron, Edna, Sharon, Tommy, Thelma, and Herb were over this evening, but I was in bed snoozing.
February 10, 1946 (Sun)
I didn't wake up till 10 this morning. Mother and Dad got up about 11. They and Ray and Alma went to Long Lake this afternoon. This afternoon I sewed on that white and pink blouse I started on about Christmas. I have it all finished except for buttonholes and buttons. I also did some embroidery, and shined a pair of Dad's shoes and my new saddleshoes. I also studied my Shorthand and answered some questions for Health. I read some stories in the American magazine too. Gosh, but this was a boring weekend except when Dottie was here - I hope next weekend isn't like this. Well, its a quarter after ten now so night. Dwight is a man now - 21 years old today.
February 11, 1946 (Mon)
It was fairly warm today. First period I typed some things for Miss Shroyer - took me all period. We got our tests back in health - I had 100 on mine. Just dictation 3rd. 4th we started our Typing contest. My opponent was Mary Jane Ross and I think I beat her. I had 59 wpm and 89% accuracy I think. Donna Lou, Anna May, Evelyn and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We got to LL at 1. I worked fairly hard today - typing, filing and sorting. Afterwards, we went downtown and I went to Howards to get those pictures for Margaret, but they weren't ready. I got home about a quarter of six. I got a letter from Phyllis Hite today. This evening I called Pat, studied my Shorthand and did some embroidery. Its about ten now so I think I'll turn in. Night.
February 12, 1946 (Tues)
It was very warm out today. I was almost late to homeroom. We had a test in Shorthand 3rd - I made 100 and 100 on it. We had round 2 in the Typing contest. I typed against Pearl Young and I think I beat her too. We didn't have to work today since it is Lincoln's Birthday and LL is closed. So I came home after 4th. This afternoon I wrote the minutes up for the last meeting of SPC and the last meeting of Job's Daughters. I also studied my Shorthand. This evening I finished my blouse, pressed it and my black skirt, addressed a few valentines (Mom, Dad, Dot and Bob, Aunt Elma, Jackie and Betty) Bob was over for awhile this evening - Dot was bowling. I started reading "Mill Stream". I took my shower and its after 10 now - night.
February 13, 1946 (Wed)
It was raining cats and dogs so Mother took me to the busline. We are still having the typing contest in Typing. I typed against Donna Russell today (there are only 6 of us left) I don't know whether I beat her or not. Anna May wasn't in school this morning so just Donna Lou, Evelyn and I ate lunch in the cafeteria. We got to work at 1. Anna May was at work. Berniece Bridges (Dwight's cousin) went to Howards with me after work. She says Dwight said he would be in the States Feb. 15th. That's Friday - Oh, happy day! I wonder, though why he didn't write and tell me that. Just think though Friday - he should be in Camp Atterbury and out sometime next week then. Oh golly! Dottie was here tonight again - Bob went down to N. Manchester. This evening I studied my Shhd. and thought about Dwight. I got a valentine from Betty G. and she called me this evening.
February 14, 1946 (Thurs)
Happy St. Valentine's Day. Now today - its snowing. We are studying vitamins in Health now. We had a test in Shorthand. I made 100 and 95 on mine. I did beat Donna Russell yesterday and then today there were just 3 of us left. One girl was eliminated today so that leaves just Jean Daughtery and I left to type tomorrow. I hope, I hope, I hope - -. Donna Lou, Evelyn, and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We got to work at 1. I typed most of the afternoon. I came straight home from work tonight. It looked like a blizzard outside. I got a letter from Betty Morris (England) today. This evening Mother and Dad went to the show. Dottie and I put some records on, turned out the lights and danced. Fun huh? I also studied my Shhd a little - very little. I also got valentines from Dot and Mom and Dad. It 10 now.
February 15, 1946 (Fri)
It was below zero today, and everything went wrong. I was late to school first. Then I had to take the Pepsi-Cola Scholarship test. We were in there all 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It was really a hard test - more of a pyschology test. I didn't get to see Betty when she came to school. 4th period we had the finals in the typing contest and I lost to Jean Daughtery. Everything went wrong at work this afternoon, (except I got paid - drew $16.67). I saw Bernice Bridges after work and she said they had a letter from Dwight - he is still in Le Harve and here I was all excited over his coming home. He probably won't be home for 2 or 3 weeks yet. I took care of the kids this evening, washed my hair and wrote a letter to Betty Morris.
February 16, 1946 (Sat)
I got up about 8 this morning. Dad took Mother and I went downtown and I bought a new dress - its aqua with cap sleeves and gold buttons and buckles - darling, a beautiful pair of borwn pumps - heelless and toeless, and a brown garbardine purse trimmed with gold studs. I just love them all. This afternoon I shortened my dress and lengthened my brown coat. I also took care of Jimmie and David. This evening I went to the Senior Play with Oddra, Pat, Betty, Donna Lou and Nancy. It was a very cute play "Come Rain or Shine". I fell down and tore my nylons, but Mrs. Greenwood fixed it with a kettling hook. I got home about 11 and in bed about 12.
February 17, 1946 (Sun)
I got up about 9:30. this morning I just read the newspapers and magazines. Margaret and Jess went to Big Lake. Golly, but it was nice outside today. Mother and Dad went for a ride with Alma and Ray this afternoon. Pat called me about noon and we went to the show in the afternoon - to the Palace and saw "Mildred Price" with Joan Crawford. I got home about 5:30 and Mother, Dad, Alma and Ray had just gotten here too. We had a chicken dinner after we got home. This evening I studied my Shorthand and got my clothes ready to wear to school tomorrow. I went to bed about 10:30.
February 18, 1946 (Mon)
It was kinda chilly today. We had a little test in Health. We had dictation and transcription in Shorthand class. I think maybe I got my 115 perfect transcription today. We are doing some tabulating in Typing. Evelyn wasn't in school this morning nor at work this afternoon. I ate lunch with Donna Lou and Doretta and Mary Lou Warner. This afternoon at work went fairly well. After work I went down to Howard's with Anna May. I got some 3 cent and 5 cent stamps. I got home about a quarter of six. This evening I studied my Shorthand, read some more of "Mill Stream." I got my clothes ready for school tomorrow. Its only 9:30 but I think I'll go to bed anyway.
February 19, 1946 (Tues)
It just snowed and snowed today. Well, it looks as if I won't get a ticket for the Sectionals after all - no season football ticket - darn it anyhow. We are discussing the digestive system in Health now. We had a test in Shorthand - I made 95 on the theory. Still doing tabulating stuff in Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou and Doretta and Mary Lou ate lunch in the cafeteria. Evelyn and I got to Lincoln Life at 1. This afternoon went pretty fast for me. I got home about a quarter of six. I ate supper quick, got cleaned up and Dad took me to the carline. Job's Daughters meeting tonight. It was a very short meeting - over by 9 - we had ice cream and cake afterwards. Dolores Perry, Barbara Widdifield, June Hartman and I rode home on the bus together - Mother picked me up at Tuttles - I got home about 10, took my shower and in bed at 11.
February 20, 1946 (Wed)
It was pretty cold today. In the morning paper it said Dwight was suppose to arrive in New York today on Fair Isle. Oh, golly, I hope I won't be disappointed again. I made my 115 wpm perfect transcription in Shhd. last Monday. Still tabulating in Typing - how I hate it. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Mary Lou, Doretta and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Evelyn and I got to work at 1. This afternoon seemed slow. I felt rotten all day - probably catching a cold. Evelyn and I went downtown after work - I got home about 6. This evening I studied Shhd. and read some more of "Mill Stream". This evening's paper said the same thing about Dwight. Bob and Dot were over for awhile this evening. Its after 10 now so night.
February 21, 1946 (Thurs)
I felt terrible this morning so I didn't go to school. This morning Mother cleaned the cupboards out so I helped her wash the dishes. I also read some of "Mill Stream." I went to work this afternoon though, but I still didn't feel very good - the afternoon went pretty fast though. I saw Bernice Bridges and she said Dwight called his Mother this morning - he will be in Camp Atterbury Saturday and home about Monday or Tuesday. I'm so scared now that he doesn't like me anymore - I only wish I knew who my rivals were. I went downtown with Evelyn after work. I took care of the kids a little while this evening. Betty Jane and Donna Lou both called me. Donna Lou's brother came home last Tuesday. It's late so night.
February 22, 1946 (Fri)
No school today because of the Sectionals - gosh, I wish I could have gone, but I just couldn't get a ticket. Last night North Side (38) defeated Concordia (28), C.C. (45) - Harlan (36), and Huntertown (29) - Elmhurst (27). This morning SS (33) - New Haven (19), Hayland (45) - Laf. Central (24) and Woodburn (48)- Arcola (27). This afternoon Leo (28) - Coesse (26), Central (53) - Monroeville (39) and N.S. (31) - C.C. (28). This evening S.S. (51) - Huntertown (24), Woodburn (36) - Hoagland (32, and Central - Leo. This morning Mother and I cleaned house. This afternoon I wrote my minutes up for Job's Daughters, washed the dishes, and shined my shoes, and of course listened to the games on the radio. This evening Mother and Dad went to the show - I worked a jigsaw puzzle and listened to the games. My cold is a little better. Honestly, Diary, I'm really worried about Dwight - oh golly, if he doesn't call me as soon as he gets home I don't know what I'll do. Night, diary.
February 23, 1946 (Sat)
I got up about 8 this morning. Something went wrong with Howard and Ahleen's furnace and Howard was at the lake fishing so Ahleen and the girls were over all day till about 4:30. This morning Jimmie and David were over too. Quite a mad house - of course we couldn't do anything. We listened to the games this afternoon. South Side beat North Side (darn it) 36 - 33. It was certainly a good game though. Then Central beat Woodburn 51 - 30. This evening I got cleaned up and Mother and Dad took me over to Marilyn Long's. We had a consolation party because we couldn't get tickets for the games - also a birthday party party for Marilyn - I took her bath powder. We played bones and I got the booby prize - a hankie. I got home about midnight. Central won the Sectionals from South 51 - 42. My cold is still terrible. Blow, blow my nose - that's all I do.
February 24, 1946 (Sun)
I got up about 9:30. I didn't do much this morning, just read the paper and went over to Margaret and Jess for awhile. This afternoon Mother and I did dishes, listened to the radio, washed some hose and my yellow sweater and scarves out, shortened the sleeves in my red sweater (it looks cute now), cleaned out the magazine basket, pressed some clothes, studied my Shorthand and straightened the living-room up. I also wrote a letter to Dwight which I probably will never give him. Golly, diary, I'm so unhappy - I'm worried sick about Dwight. The same questions keep ringing in my brain "Will he call me as soon as he gets home?" and "Does he still like me?" and "Does he have any other girls?" I'd give anything to know the answers to these questions, diary, If only you could help!
February 25, 1946 (Mon)
Back to school today. It was rather chilly today. I got caught up on my subjects in school. We are studying the circulatory system in Health. Just dictation in Health. We started the consolation tourney in Typing - Jean and I aren't typing in that though. Evelyn, Donna Lou and I ate lunch in the cafeteria - we got to work at 1. I worked fairly hard this afternoon. I still have a terible cold. After work Anna May and Bernice went downtown with me to get some notebook paper. Bridges' went down to see Dwight Sun. He said he would be home sometime this week. Bernice said he looked wonderful - if only I could see for myself. Honestly, every time the telephone rings, I jump a mile and start praying, but its never him. What a life! I didn't do anything this evening - I couldn't. Its after 10 now.
February 26, 1946 (Tues)
It was rather warm this morning. We punctured our little finger to see if we had enough hemogoblin in our blood in Health - I didn't. We had a test in Shorthhand, and I did terrible on it 75 and 70. During Typing, I cut a stencil for Mr. Reeves. Evelyn, Donna, Doretta, Mary Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria then Evelyn and I went to work. I worked pretty hard this afternoon - Dorothy was gone for over an hour taking x-ray treatments. It was raining when I came home from work, so Dad came after me at Tuttles. Bob and Dot came over this evening. Bob talked quite a bit about the war - I popped some popcorn. It was 10 before they left - I took my shower and went to bed about 11. Still no word from Dwight - darn it.
February 27, 1946 (Wed)
It was fairly warm today. We had a short quiz in Health. I think I did pretty good on it. Just dictation in Shorthand and Typing tests in Typing. I did terrible on all. Evelyn was absent today - she says I gave her my cold and Doretta wasn't there so Donna Lou and I ate lunch all by ourselves. I went to work then - got there at 1. Anna May and I came straight home from work tonight. Ahleen called and wants me to go to Eastern Star banquet with her March 30th. I went over and took care of Marjorie, David and Jimmie for a few hours - I made a $1. Still no word from Dwight - I wonder if he's home. What a life I lead - I'm beginning to despise it. Its late - almost 11 so night, dear diary.
February 28, 1946 (Thurs)
The weather was about the same as yesterday. I made A on that quiz in Health yesterday. We had more dictation in Shorthand and more Typing tests in Typing. Per usual, I did terrible. Evelyn was here today so she, Donna Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria and then Evie and I went to LL. I got paid today - drew $14.26. After work Evelyn and I went downtown to try and find some pearl hairclasps - but no luck. I got home about 6. Mother and Dad went to the show so I staryed home and read part of the book "Handsome Road". Honestly, I felt so blue this evening - I bawled - everything goes wrong. Darn that Dwight anyway - Why do boys always hurt girls so? Its about 10 now.
No Leap Year Entry
This is not leap year and so no February 29. I wonder what this year will hold for me, my family and friends. Last year was one of the best in all my life - if only this could equal that. If only I could look ahead and find the answers to my questions - "What will I do after I graduate? Will I still be going with Dwight - if not, who with? How many of my friends will be married by this time next year? And a very big question, will I be married by then and if so to whom? Will I ever find a man that suits me? So far, Charlie Christman is the only one that really appeals to me. If only the feeling were mutual. Well, only time can tell what will happen.
