March 1, 1946 (Fri)

It was really a wonderful day outside - so warm - just like sping. I did a little typing for Miss Shroyer 1st period. We had a test in Shorthand. I think I did pretty good on it. We had typing test in Typing and I made 66 wpm with 94% accuracy on one. Not bad eh? Evelyn, Donna Lou, Donetta, Mary Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria then Evelyn and I went to work. This afternoon went so fast that I was still working when the 5 o'clock bells rang. I saw Bernice after work and she said Dwight got home last night and he hasn't called me yet. I went home feeling terrible. I took care of the kids from about 7 to 12:30 - made a dollar. Nobody was home at our house, but I don't think Dwight called. I got to bed about one o'clock.

March 2, 1946 (Sat)

Betty called this morning and she has her diamond ring, a new job at $120 a month and Erv's sister is here from New York. It was another wonderful day but I was still feeling pretty blue. I washed my hair first thing this morning - then took care of David and Jimmie while Margaret went downtown. I took my shower etc. and Aunt Elma came after me about 2:30. We went to the lockers and to the greenhouse and then out to her house. I did very little this afternoon - popped corn for this evening (popcorn balls) and started reading "Three O'Clock Dinner". Janet called and wanted me to go skating with her, Paul and Bill, but I couldn't, darn it! Aunt Elma had a party for her Young People's Class at Church. We had a lot of fun. There more boys than girls. One boy called Feezer Horsemeyer (quite a handle) was awful nice - the last of the kids left about 12:30.. I went to bed about 1.

March 3, 1946 (Sun)

Margaret is 27 today. I got up about 7:30. Aunt Elma and I went to Church and Sunday School at Wallen M. E. Then 3 of the girls who were at the party last night and Aunt Elma brought me home about 11:30. I called Evelyn Hollmann. Betty Jane called me and said she, Erv, and Janice (Erv's sister) were coming out this evening. Dad took me over to the Crescent Ave Evangelical Church where I met Evelyn and we went to Donna Lou's brother's wedding. Leonard Lacy - Betty Hedden. Donna Lou was maid-of-honor. Afterwards Evelyn and I went to the show and saw "And Then There Were None". It was very good. I got home about 6 and Margaret said Dwight was out this afternoon - she said he looked wonderful and would try to come out tonight if he could get the car. Anyway, he didn't come out this evening - it makes me feel good to know he was out though. Erv couldn't get his car started so they didn't come out either. Donna Lou called. Its after 10 now and I'm so tired but happy.

March 4, 1946 (Mon)

It was another wonderful day outside. We're still discussing respiratory system in Health. We had transcription in Shhd. - I was hoping we wouldn't start that for awhile yet. Evelyn, Doretta, Mary Lou and I ate lunch and Evie and I went to work - made it at 1. Golly, this afternoon went fairly fast except I began to feel a little sick. Mother had a birthday dinner for Margaret, but as soon as I got home from work I went to bed. Dwight came over about 7 and caught me in bed. I got up though and put a housecoat on. Gosh, he looks wonderful - has changed very little I think. Gosh, what a wonderful way to spend an evening. He left about 11 and I went to bed then. See why it was a wonderful day?

March 5, 1946 (Tues)

I didn't feel too good yet, but I still went to school. I thought we were going to have a test in Shorthand, but we didn't. We had 5 minute dictations in Shorthand instead - then we transcribed that in Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Doretta, Mary Lou, Kathleen Brenzer and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Kathleen goes downtown with Evelyn and I now. We didn't get to work till a quarter after 1. I worked hard this afternoon. Evelyn and I went downtown after work. I got home about 6 and ate and got cleaned up. Mother and Dad took me down to Job's Daughters. We had a taffy pull after the meeting and then Betty Lou, Dolores Perry, June Hartman, Barbara Widdifield, and I went down to Hobby's House. Mother picked me up at Tuttle's afterwards. I got home about 10:15 and in bed about 11.

March 6, 1946 (Wed)

We're going to have a big test in Health Friday. We had transcription again in Shhd. and Typing. I made 100, 100, and 60 on mine from last Monday. The same kids as ususl and I ate lunch in cafeteria then Evie, Kathleen, and I went to work. Betty Greenwood was on that bus - her diamond is beautiful - she'll probably get on the same bus with us everyday. Got to work at 1. I worked very hard again. This evening Evelyn and I went downtown again after work. We got some of the cutest barettes - only 2 for 5 cents. It was just pouring so Dad came down after me at Tuttles. This evening I studied my Shhd. (for a change), shined my saddles. I did a little ironing. Dot saw Dwight downtown this morning. Its not even 10 yet, but I'm going to bed - night!

March 7, 1946 (Thurs)

It was another wonderful day outside - so very warm. We had a Courtesy Assembly this morning - rather a silly show - kinda cute. My topic for my term paper for Health is "Patent Medicines" - they're due May 24th. We had a test in Shorthand - I made 100 on Theory. We had to do some darn old tabulating in Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch together. Betty Jane got on the same bus we did again going to work. I just worked till 3 today. Dorothy is going to have her tonsils taken out tomorrow so she won't be here for a week or so. I went back to school for SPC - we had a cute play, I got home about 4:30. I studied my Health for the test tomorrow. Dottie and Bob are moving down to Christman's tonight. They'll stay there till they get their house remodeled. Its about then o'clock now.

March 8, 1946 (Fri)

We had a big and hard test in Health - I haven't the slightest idea what I made on it. We had transcription in Shorthand and Typing. Donna Lou, Evelyn and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Evelyn and I missed our bus, but got to work just a couple minutes after 1. Dorothy had her tonsils taken out today so naturally she wasn't there. Another girl was in there working on the Red Cross Drive, but I had to do all the other work. Evelyn and I met Betty Jane after work. Betty started taking instructions to turn Catholic last Tuesday from Father Manoski (same one Dottie took from). I wrote a letter to Jackie. This evening I took care of the kids. Nobody was home at our house so I don't know whether Dwight called or not, but I doubt it.

March 9, 1946 (Sat)

I got up about 8:30. I washed my hair this morning, and also took care of the kids again - more fun. I baked chocolate chip cookies too. The kids were all mean - what a time I had. This afternoon I got cleaned up, then wrote my minutes up for Job's Daughters and SPC. Central defeated Richmond in an overtime game this afternoon (very exciting) and this evening they defeated Gas City this winning the Super-Regionals at Muncie. This evening Ray, Lavon, Raymie, Elaine, Esther and Carl came over. We played ten cent poker till midnight - I won about 10 cents there. Then I played Raymond till about 2 - lost 40 cents. And still no word from Dwight - he makes me so mad!

March 10, 1946 (Sun)

We got up about 8:30. We got ready and left about then to go down to North Manchester. They were all at church when we got there. Golly, everytime I see Charlie my heart starts pounding. Golly, I wish I could do something about it. He seems to like me - he's always teasing me, but still - I guess its hopeless. Charlie is the only guy I know who I could really care for, I think. We got home about 5:30. This evening finally started studying my shorthand. Dwight still hasn't called or come over. Honestly, I don't know what I'm going to do about him - he's nice, but I never know what to expect. Well, its getting late so I had better get some sleep. I'm tired but very unhappy!

March 11, 1946 (Mon)

Back to school again - happens every Monday morning. I made 95 on my test in Health Friday. I didn't think I had done that good. We had transcription again today in Shorthand and Typing. Donna Lou, Evelyn, Doretta, Mary Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Betty Jane got on the same bus that Evelyn and I were on again. I really worked hard this afternoon. We were awfully busy. I even worked overtime till 6:15 - all myself - there wasn't a single other person around - man, was it quiet. I got home about a quarter of 7. This evening I just studied my shorthand. And still no word from Dwight - I absolutely cannot understand him. Its not even ten yet, but I'm pretty tired and disgusted. Night, diary.

March 12, 1946 (Tues)

It was a very warm day today. I started reading about "Patent Medicines" first for my term paper due May 24th for Health. In Health we got to meet the duchess. She is a model who comes all apart - her lungs, heart, lover, intestines etc. all come out - she is very very interesting. We checked our 5 minutes transcriptions letter in Shorthand - I had 93.6 accuracy on mine. We had Typing tests 4th, but I did terrible Donna Lou, Kathleen, Evelyn and I ate together. We missed our bus, but so did Betty Jane so we got to see her. Boy, I really worked hard again this afternoon, but I didn't work overtime. I got home about 5:30. Dorothy and Bob came in town this evening and were over so I didn't get any homework done at all. I just ironed my white skirt, took my shower and went to bed about 10.

March 13, 1946 (Wed)

Still quite warm outside. Dr. Bauers is going to lecture to our health class the first week in May on the reproduction organs - I can hardly wait. We had 5 minute dictation and transcription in Shorthand and Typing. I did terrible on it. Donna Lou, Evelyn, Kathleen and I ate together. Betty Jane was on the same bus going to work. I worked very very hard again this afternoon - golly am I every getting behind in the work though - it is really piling up. Evelyn and I went downtown afterwards and looked for formal slip patterns. I got home about 6. This evening I studied my Shorthand and read some more of "Three O'Clock dinner." Its just fairly good. Honestly, I felt so down in the dumps today. Well, its not even ten yet, but I'm so sleepy so night.

March 14, 1946 (Thurs)

It was nice this morning, but rained this afternoon and evening. We had Guidance Period this morning - Mr. Reeves talked to the Seniors in the auditorium. In this morning paper Nancy Peipenbrink's father sued her mother for divorce. It shocked all of us kids. We didn't know anything was wrong. More transcription in Shhd. and typing. Doretta, Mary Lou, Evelyn, Kathleen, Donna Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We got to work at 1. I worked hard this afternoon, but not as hard as I worked the other 3 days. I saw Bernice Bridges after work. All she said was that Dwight had been busy around the house. It was raining when I got out of work, so Dad picked me up at Tuttles. This evening I just studied my Shorthand, read Colliers Magazine and some more of "Three O'Clock Dinner." I took my shower and its after ten now - - good-night.

March 15, 1946 (Fri)

We are discussing muscles and their tissues in Health now - that's not too interesting. We had transcription in shorthand and typing again today. By the way, we got our report cards last Wednesday - I had all P's. We got our pictures in homeroom that we had taken quite awhile back - they aren't too bad. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Betty Jane got on the same bus. This afternoon I went down to Wolf and D's and got a book for Miss O'Rourke. I also typed a letter to Dorothy Murphy from the old maids and then one from me. I got paid today - $19.05. Evelyn and I went downtown after work, but didn't buy anything. This evening I took care of Marjorie, David and Jimmie. I read some more of "Three O'Clock Dinner." Margaret and Jess came home about 12:30 - I got to bed about 1.

March 16, 1946 (Sat)

I got up about 8. Right after breakfast I washed my hair. Margaret brought Jimmie and David over this morning while they went downtown. Then when they came home Mother and I went down. We got a pattern for me a formal slip, but couldn't find any material. We ran into Betty Jane and her mother so the four of us went into Morris' and had a soda. We got home about 4. Central beat Flora this afternoon, but went and lost to Anderson in the last game this evening 67 - 53. It was terrible - everyone was so disappointed. I got a letter from Jackie today. Alma and Roy came over this evening. I just read some more of "Three O'Clock Dinner," then finally went to bed about 10. A very boring day, if you ask me.

March 17, 1946 (Sun)

I got up about 8 again. About 9:30 Mother, Dad and I went over to Howard and Ahleen's. Kay has been sick again. We went over to Stolte's for a little while and then home. We all got cleaned up and went over to Alma and Roy's for dinner. About 4 they brought me home, then went away. This afternoon I just listened to the radio, made fudge and read some more of "Three O'Clock Dinner". Mother and Dad came home about 7. Dorothy Gremaux called yesterday. She is discharged from the Waves now. Golly, I'd like to see her - she is going to see our Dottie at the bowling alley Tuesday evening. I finished reading that book this evening. I took my shower and went to bed (where I am now) and its about a quarter of 11 so night.

March 18, 1946 (Mon)

It is still rainy and dreary outside. We had the best assembly about 9 this morning. It was given by C. C. Jones and called "Beyong the Rainbow." Very, very good. We had transcription again in Shorthand and Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen, Doretta, Mary Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Betty got on the same bus we did. Dorothy Murphy has the mumps now - I don't know when she'll be back. I'm beginning to get caught up on my work at LL. Maybe I'll be all caught up before Dorothy comes back. After work Betty Lou Sowers and I went down to Scottish Rite Temple for a Job's Daughters rehearsal. Tomorrow is our big meeting. Howard came down to Tuttles after me. I got home about 7. Howard, Ahleen and girls were over for supper. This evening I cleaned my white slippers and read a movie magazine - its after 10 now.

March 19, 1946 (Tues)

It was a little warmer today, but still pretty wet. We are discussing the nervous system in Health. We just had dictation in Shorthand and some drippy kind of test in Typing. Donna Lou, Kathleen, Evelyn and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We missed our bus, but still got to work about ten after 1. This afternoon I went downtown to First National Bank (to take some knitting down for Miss O'Rourke) and to Philharmonic office to get some tickets for them. More fun. I came right home from work and got cleaned up. Dad and Jess's cars are both in the garage so I had to call a taxi to go to Scottish Rite Temple. Dot and Bob came over this evening. We had a big initiation metting for J.D's for Scottish Rites on 3rd floor. Afterwards Betty Lou, Dolores Perry, Joan Kline and I went to Hobby House and then home - I got home about 11 and in bed about midnight.

March 20, 1946 (Wed)

A little warmer yet today but still wet. We had transcription in Shhd. and Typing and we had to have envelopes and carbon copies and no help in reading our notes - man! I'll tell you tomorrow what I got on them. Doretta, Mary Lou, Kathleen, Evelyn and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We made our bus today, but Betty Jane didn't. I worked fairly hard today - Miss O'Rourke went to Indianapolis - Miss McCrory was kind of crabby. After work Evelyn and I went downtown. I got home about 6. I got a letter from Seventeen and one back that I had written Dwight. Jess has my bed painted white - it really looks nice. This evening I studied my Shorthand, ironed a dress and blouse, and took my shower and went to bed. This is the first time I've put my hair up since Sunday. Its after 10 now.

March 21, 1946 (Thurs)

It was fairly warm today. First period a bunch of us girls went down to Miss Gross's office for our Senior interviews, but she was busy. We had a test in Shorthand, and then in Typing we graded those tests we took the other day and then had a typing test. I typed 73 gross words net - 64 wpm - 88% accuracy. Kathleen, Donna Lou and I ate lunch. Betty Jane missed her bus again. Miss Suter gave me points for SPC to give Betty. Evelyn and I went downtown after work. I got home about six. I have my own bed home now painted white - it looks nice. I got another Calling All Girls Magazine and no subscription either. This evening I studied my Health and started reading, "The Forge." Dad and I talked a great deal this evening. Its about 11.

March 22, 1946 (Fri)

It was very warm this morning but got colder this afternoon and it rained. Senior Class had a meeting this morning - whether to have Senior Dance in NS gym or Central Cafeteria. Afterwords we went to see Miss Gross, but still didn't get to talk to her. We had transcription in Shorthand and typing. Evelyn and I ate lunch by ourselves today. Betty wasn't on the bus again today. Miss McCrory wasn't there this afternoon so I didn't have too much work to do. Evelyn and I stopped at (????) to see Donna Lou. We almost got hit my a car on the corner of Lewis and Calhoun. I got home about 6. This evening I just read some more of "The Forge" - - a very good book. Well, its about 10 - I can see where this is going to be a very dull weekend.

March 23, 1946 (Sat)

I got up about a quarter of 8. I washed my hair first thing. Then Mother, Dad and I went downtown. We got my dressing table - its cute - has drawers on one side and shelves for shoes, and we got material for my bedspread and dressing table skirt - it has a white background with big blue flowers and green leaves - very, very pretty. This afternoon I took care of the kids for awhile. Then I came home and helped Mother clean the house. About 7 I went over to Margaret and Jess's. I'm going to keep books for Jess since he is in business for himself again. I took care of the kids this evening again. I finished reading "The Forge." Margaret and Jess didn't get home till a quarter of 3.

March 24, 1946 (Sun)

I got up about 9. This morning I baked a peach upside-down cake. Then went over to Margaret and Jess' for awhile. Marjorie came back over with us and stayed for dinner. After dinner I worked on a doll for Midge with her looking on with wide eyes. She went home about 3:30. Mother and Dad also went away then. I embroidered on my quilt and a scarf this afternoon and listened to the radio. I also cleaned out some of my dresser drawers. Mother and Dad came home about 8. I studied my Shorthand, and listened to radio some more. I finally took my shower and went to bed a little after ten.

March 25, 1946 (Mon)

As usual back to school on Monday morning. It was wonderful today - so warm, the sky so blue and the grass so green. Mother and Dad suggested I give a party the Saturday before my birthday - they're such darlings! I think I'll ask Charlie for myself, Dot and Bob, Betty and Erv, Janet and Paul, Pudge, Pat, Donna Lou, and their men. Oh, I can't think of all of them right now. I had my Senior interview with Miss Gross and she said I should go into Personnel work and take courses at Indiana Ext. - she said I rated very high on my tests. We had a sub. in Shhd. and Typing - I started a letter to Jackie. Dorothy M. isn't back at work yet. I got a letter and also a hanky chain letter from Lucile. Bill is still in Korea. This evening I studied my Shorthand, looked at pictures of Charlie and wrote those chain letters - I'm suppose to get 155 hankies. I took my shower and now its after 10 and time for my beauty nap.

March 26, 1946 (Tues)

Kinda rainy this morning, but ended up to be a fairly nice day. I got the best book in the library on games for parties - especially one party. "The Gang Busters" - its real cute - the kids are enthusiastic over having a party. We had another comprehensive test in Typing. Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Dorothy Murphy came into the office awhile this afternoon - she doesn't look very good - she isn't coming back to work this week and maybe not even next. Evelyn and I went downtown after work and I got some hankies for that Hanky Exchange. Bob and Dot came in today and got their bedroom suit - my bedroom is all messed up only the bed in it. Dot sounded enthused about it and she thought Charlie would like the idea too. Its about 10:30 now.

March 27, 1946 (Wed)

It was a nice day out today. We had an assembly second period. It was given by a man who collected canes - kinda interesting. In Shorthand and Typing we had our mailable letter day transcription. I don't think I did too good. Donna Lou, Kathleen, Evelyn and I ate lunch in cafeteria and then to work - we've been gettting there at one lately. I worked pretty hard again this afternoon. Evelyn and I went downtown after work. Nancy was on the same bus I was coming home. Mother had jury duty today - she didn't get home till about 5 - she's all excited over it. This evening I wrote a letter to Lucile and started reading "Green Dolphin Street." Its getting late now.

March 28, 1946 (Thurs)

It was a beautiful day today - the warmest we've had this year. This morning part of the Senior girls went to Club Room where some man from Allied Mills talked to us. I worked on my Health term paper first period. We had typing tests in Typing, but I did terrible. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch and then hurried outdoors to drink in the glorious sunshine. I worked fairly hard this afternoon. After work Evelyn and I went downtown. Pauline Chambers was on the bus I was coming home - she's home for six weeks. Betty Jane came over on her bicycle, but I just missed her. Erv and Betty came over about 7 though and were here for an hour. Mother didn't come home from jury duty till 9. I took care of kids for awhile. I finally got in bed about 10:30.

March 29, 1946 (Fri)

It was a little on the rainy side today. This is my last day of school till a week from Monday - Spring vacation. We had transcription in Shorthand and Typing, and also a test in Shorthand - I didn't do too well on it. Evelyn, Kathleen and I ate lunch in cafeteria. I didn't work too hard this afternoon. I got paid today - $17.82. After work Evelyn and I tried to find dresses alike but no luck. Pauline was on the same bus again. My dressing table came today - now it has to be painted. Also mine and Donna Lou's pictures came today - they're not bad at all. Mother called Dorothy this evening and she said Charlie said he'd come - Hurrah!.. She wrote me a letter - I should get it tomorrow. This eveninng I just read some more of "Green Dolphin St." - its getting late now.

March 30, 1946 (Sat)

I got up about 7:30. I washed my hair right away. Then Dad took Mother and I downtown. We looked all over for a coat for Mother, but absolutely no luck - I did find a new dress and for only $55 - it's melon with capsleeves and buttons down the front with a design on one side - its really cute. This afternoon I got cleaned up for the Eastern Star Banquet and Installation of Officers. Lucile called me about 6 and we talked for awhile. Howard came after me about a quarter after 6, and we dashed down to the Masonic Temple where we met Ahleen. Golly, but there were a lot of people at the Banquet and Installation - and it was all very very impressive. Howard and Ahleen brought me home about a quarter after 11.

March 31, 1946 (Sun)

I got up about 8. This morning I helped Dad clean the car - I swept the inside out and washed the windows. I also mowed the lawn. Dad gave me my first driving lesson this morning - I just steered and shifted gears - almost ran into a tree. I called Betty, Pudgie, Pat, Donna Lou and Evelyn this morning - none of them could go to the show. I met Lucile downtown about 3:30. We went to the Paramount and saw "The Harvey Girls". Then we went to Meyers and got sundaes. We went to the Emboyd then and we saw "Miss Susie Slagle" there. We went to Meyers and ate sandwiches and phosphates - we certainly had a lot of fun - just the 2 of us. Mother came down to the busline after me. I got home about a quarter after 10 and in bed at 11.
