June 1, 1946 (Sat)
I got up about 8. Mother and Dad started out early to try and find some meat. I made the beds and straightened the house. About 10 I went over to Margaret and Jess's and took care of the kids till 1:30. I put the hem in my graduation dress. I got cleaned up then and met Betty Jane downtown at 3. I exchanged my new slip, bought white headscarves and notepaper and we had our picture taken at Murphy's (terrible), drank a coke and came home. I got a postcard from Jackie saying she was expecting us 15 and 16, and a graduation card and hankie from Gloria Henricks. Bob, Dot and Charlie came in about 9 (Dot's and Bob's 6 mos. anniversary) We went to show, saw "Spiral Staricase." Came home - Roy, Alma, Marg and Jess here. Ate hotdogs and played euchre till two. Charlie only got to kiss me once this evening - too many people. I got to bed about 2:30.
June 2, 1946 (Sun)
I got up about 9. Dad made a picnic table for our backyard. I went down and visited Steve and Betty Holmes (neighbors) for a little while - then they came down to our house. I got a white formal hankie. Howard, Ahleen and girls were over for dinner. We played croquet this afternoon and took some more pictures of me in cap and gown. I slept for a little while this afternoon. Charlie came in about a quarter of 7. Mother, Charlie and I went to my baccalaureate services at Plymouth Congregational Church - pretty good. Afterwards Charlie and I took Mother home and went out to West Swinney and met Betty and Erv. Bernie Bridges (home from Merchant Marines) stopped and talked to me for awhile - he looked nice. Dwight was there too, but I didn't talk to him. We got caught in rain so came home about 10:30. Charlie gave me the most beautiful bracelet and locket for graduation. Charlie also gave me a cute picture of him - he left about midnight.
June 3, 1946 (Mon)
I started menustrating at about 7:30. Dr. Conley came out about 9 - had to give me 2 shots. I slept and read most of the morning. Betty and Donna Lou both called me. I got up about 12:30 - drank 2 cups of black coffee and got cleaned up. Mother took me over to school about 2. We had rehearsal for tomorrow at 2:30. Afterwards Mr. Nothrop told me my average was 92.96 and I was 9th in the class out of 282. We took some more pictures and then Barbara Widdifield and a bunch of other girls brought me home. About 4:30 Bernard called and wanted to come over - said he wanted to talk to me. I didn't feel too hot this evening - slept for a little while. Roy and Alma came over - brought me 2 plastic hangers for graduation. Bernie didn't come or call either either again - these Bridges boys. Its after 10:30 now - everybody liked my bracelet and locket - I do too!
June 4, 1946 (Tues)
Graduation Day for me. I got up about 8:30. Mother and I straightened the house up. I pressed my slip, dress and gown. I got cleaned up and Mother, Marge, and I went after Dad at noon. Charlie, Dot and Bob came about a quarter of 1. We ate dinner, did dishes and took some pictures. Dot and Bob gave me a beautiful gold pin and earrings. About 2 we went to school and had our graduation exercies - got our diplomas - very nice. Afterwards turned our caps and gowns in and cleaned my locker out - got home about 5. I got a card from Aunt Ida and a letter from Jackie. Dot, Bob and Charlie took me down to Job's Daughters. This was Dad's night. Afterwards Irene Anderson, Betty Lou, Do Perry, Barbara Widdifield, Barbara Keefer (Betty Lou's cousin) and I went to Manachios Back. Dad brought me home. Got to bed about 11.
June 5, 1946 (Wed)
I got up at 6:30, and I was practically dead. I had to run all the way to the busline to catch my bus. Dorothy is still working just in the mornings. We started about 7 new girls today. I worked just fairly hard. Evelyn, Anna May and Janet aren't coming back to work till next Satday. At noon I took 4 rolls of film to Howard's, ate lunch at Kressges - then back to work. I worked harder this afternoon. I came straight home from work - was home by 5. Betty Jane's picture was in Sat. evening paper and she got fired yesterday because she is getting married. This evening I ironed a couple of dresses, tried to call Betty, did call Donna Lou and Marilyn Long and wrote a letter to Lucy and thank- you notes to Gloria Henrichs and Nadine Waggoner. Its just about 10 now - night.
June 6, 1946 (Thurs)
Its so hard to get ready in time to catch the 7:30 bus. It was a very nice day today. I worked so hard this morning I forgot to take my rest period. Lucy called me this morning. At noon I met Lucy and Bonnie - talked to them for awhile - then met Donna Lou and Kathleen and ate lunch with them at YMCA cafeteria. Lucy gave me a very nice box of stationery for graduation. I worked fairly hard this afternoon - Miss McCrory said my salary would start at $100 a Satth. I came straight home from work. Alma and Ray were over this evening. I did a little ironing, read some short stories in a magazine, washed my hair and took my shower - I got a graduation card from Aunt Dessie today. Its after 10 now.

It was a nice day today - warm too. I ride on the bus with Bonnie O'Neill now to work. I worked fairly hard today. I met Donna Lou at noon - Melba McCamSat (a girl from Lincoln Life) ate lunch with us. Afterwards we went down to Howard's and got some pictures I had taken Senior Day - they were pretty good. After work I went downtown to Wolf and D's and am going to open a charge account. I got home about 5:30. Mother and Dad went to lake before I got home. I got cleaned up, pressed some dresses and Charlie came about 8. I did dishes then and packed my suitcase. We left about 8:30 - got to Dot and Bob's about 9:30. The four of us played euchre till midnight then Charlie left - we were in bed about 1 - I slept on davenport.
June 8, 1946 (Sat)
Dorothy got me up about 7:30. Bob, Charlie, and their dad replanted some of Bob's corn. Dot and I did breakfast dishes, Mrs. Christman was over for awhile. We got dinner - Mr. Christman came in and ate and then Charlie and Bob. After we finished dinner dishes Dot and I went to North Manchester - we picked Harriet up. Got home about 5:30 - ate, did dishes - Mr. and Mrs. Christman, Charlie and Harriet came after us about 8:00. We went to Huntington. Charlie, Dot and Bob went to confession - then 4 of us to show - saw "Abilene Town". Terrible - cowboy picture. The rest of the family were at Charlie's aunt. We went after them. We had more fun - all the Christman's are so nice and Wedendly. We got to Dot and Bob's about 12:30 - in bed about midnight.
June 9, 1946 (Sun)
We got up about a quarter of 7. I ate breakfast and we all got cleaned up. All the Christmans picked us up about 7:30. We went to 8:00 mass at Catholic Church in Wabash. The first time I have ever been to a regular meeting - outside of midnight Mass once. We got back to Christmans about 10. Charlie and I read the paper on the davenport while holding hands. Fern (Ray's girl) was there for dinner too besides a bunch of their relation. In the afternoon Charlie and I went for a ride - I got behind the wheel and drove for quite awhile - gosh it was fun - Charlie said I did good. We went to airport - took a ride in airplane - man, that was thrilling! We came back to Chritmans - more company there - Charlie and I sat out in the yard. Fern took some colored pictures of us - Dot and Bob went to town (Ft. Wayne). Charlie, Harriet, and I went over to Dot and Bob's and got my suitcase - I helped Charlie do chores - then after supper and dishes - about 9 we took Harriet to N, Manchester and got home about 10 - what a wonderful drive - we necked quite a bit today - Golly, but I like him a lot and he likes me too.

After such a wonderful weekend, it was certainly hard to go back to work. It was such a beautiful weekend outdoors too. We started 30 new girls this morning - man!, did we ever work - I was so tired anyway. Evelyn and I met Kathleen and ate at YMCA today again. I typed practically all afternoon - Dorothy was here this afternoon too. I came straight home from work. I played with Marjorie out in the yard blowing bubbles - more fun. I pressed a dress and got caught up on my diary. Lavon and Elaine came over and brought me a very nice pair of white pajamas for graduation - they are very nice - I built a fire in utility room, took a shower and went to bed about 10. Donna Lou called me too.
June 11, 1946 (Tues)
nother hard day. I typed most of the morning. Dorothy was only here till noon. Evelyn and I brought our lunch and ate in the snack bar - free chocolate milk too - its real cute. Afterwards we sat on front steps and talked. This afternoon it was so hot and, I went on an errand for Miss McCrory to Ewing St. - I was so warm then. After work Evelyn and I went to W and D, and I can use my charge account. We looked at luggage, but it is so expensive but beautiful - $32.23 for 21" cases. After supper this evening I put on my shorts, ironed several dresses, put a hem in another one and shined a pair of white shoes. Steve was over for quite awhile this evening - it certainly is interesting to hear him talk abou the war. Its 10 now.
June 12, 1946 (Wed)
It rained practically all day today. I worked very hard again this morning. Four more girls started. Evelyn and I ate lunch in the snack bar. Afterwards we went to Howard's and got the 4 rolls of pictures - most of them are pretty good. Cute one of Charlie and I, After work Evelyn and I went downtown - stopped into Kings Leather Shop - they had a darling tan and white houndstooth check 21" case for only $16.38 so I had them put it back for me till Firday noon. I also got some buttons. Came home and got cleaned up. Blew some more bubbles for Midge - Charlie came about 8 - he brought me a box of chocolates. We went to see "Gilda" - very good - then afterwards to Gardners for hamburgs. Got home about 11:30 - Charlie left about 12:30. Golly but I hate to see him leave - it will be so long before I see him again - how can I stand it?

The sun shone a little bit today, but still kind of chilly. I didn't work too hard today - Dorothy was just here for the morning. I drew $36.08 today. Janet, Evelyn and I ate our lunch in the snack bar - then we went downtown and paid for my suitcase and put a beautiful 2 piece bathing suit on charge at the Paris. After work Evelyn and I went downtown, picked up my suitcase and bought invitations for the shower for Betty. I got home about 6 - Mom and Dad had already gone to lake. I started getting every thing ready and Lucile called. We talked for awhile - then Dolores Perry and Barbara Widdifield came over. Some boy by the name of Ralph Adair called me (said he was a cousin to Walt Stermeyer) and we talked for quite awhile - used to write to Betty Jane - sounds cute - ex-sailor - supposed to call next week. Then about 10 Barbara, Dolores, Anna May and Kathleen Messerschmidt came over - its about 11 now.
June 15, 1946 (Sat)
I got up about 7:30. I finished packing my suitcase and getting ready. Lucile, Eddie and Jim Messman came about 9:30. We left town about 10 - got to Zimmerman's about 12:30. Gosh, but it was good to see them. We ate lunch. Jackie had to go to work at 1. Lucy, Mrs. Zimmerman and I did dishes. Jackie came back at 2 and the boys, Doug, girls, and I went downtown and got bathing suits for Lucy and Jackie. We walked around town, went back to the house, ate supper and Jackie went back to work at 5. The rest of us just messed around talking etc. Then we (the 5 of us) got cleaned up and went down to drugstore and met Jackie at 10. We (6 of us) went to the Hi-Hat then and ate and talked. We rode around and got back to Zimmerman's at 1. The boys stayed at a hotel. It was very late when we got to sleep - we certainly had a lot of fun - Jim is very nice and rather nice-looking, I think.
June 16, 1946 (Sun)
We got up about 8:30. Lucile, Jackie, I and Mr. Zimmerman went to church. We got home about 11:30. The boys were there by then. We read funny papers, took some pictures, then took a picnic lunch and the 8 of us went to the Park there at Findlay and it is very very nice. We ate lunch - then rode on the ferris wheel and merry-go-round. The 6 of us went swimming then. Findlay has a dandy swimming pool. We rode around looking at Findlay some more. Back to Zimmerman's and then we took a mess of pictures. We left abound 5:30. Jim and I sat in the backseat. I think he kinda likes me - we have a lot of fun together. We got home at 7:30. This evening I was so tired - I just read funny papers and put my hair up. Its about 10 now. Night!
June 17, 1946 (Mon)
Back to work after the wonderful weekend. It was very hot all day today. We started 14 people today - more work and I do mean work. Evelyn, Janet and I ate our lunch in the snack bar - then went downtown and took my films to Howards. I worked pretty hard this afternoon too. Evelyn and I went downtown after work - shopping around for shower gifts for Betty. I got home about 6, hurried up and got cleaned up. Margaret and Jess took me down to Temple - we had a Job's Daughters practice. We got out about 8:30 and Betty Lou, Phyllis Able, Joan Kline and I went down to Manachios - were there till 10 and I called Mother and Charlie was there so he came after me downtown. We got home about a quarter of 11 - we just sat and talked and necked till 12:30. Gosh, I was tired though.
June 18, 1946 (Tues)
It was very cold and wet all day. What weather! I put in another hard day. At noon Evelyn and I went downtown and I got a beautiful white silk nightie for Betty - it cost me $12.98. I only hope she likes it, and it is long enough. We had lots of applicants this afternoon. After work Evy and I shopped around some more for shower prizes. I got home about 6. I called Donna Lou, Evelyn, and Betty this evening. I got cleaned up and went down to Job's Daughters. Mother and Dad took me down. It was a quarter before we got out. Oh yes, Ralph Adair (the ex-sailor) called me again. More fun! After Job's Daughters I went to Manacha's with Betty Lou, June, Dolores and Barbara Widdifield. Mother came after me at busline. It was after 12 when I got to bed.
June 19, 1946 (Wed)
Another terrible day - as far as this weather is concerned anyway. We started several girls again today. Also one boy. At noon Evelyn, Janet and I ate in snack bar - then downtown and bought wrapping paper and such. We were a few minutes late getting back to work. I didn't work too hard this afternoon. I came straight home after work. After I ate I got cleaned up and about 7 Erv came after me - then we went after Evelyn and he took us over to Betty's grandmother's. Her aunt (Matron of Honor) was also there. We had a little party - discussed plans for the Monding - our dresses, mitts etc. and Betty gave us rhinestone bracelets and earrings - they are beautiful. It was about 10:30 when I got home. I got an invitation from Janet for a shower on Betty on Sun. - ours is Sat.
June 20, 1946 (Thurs)
Rainy this morning, but a little warmer. Sun started to come out this afternoon. A couple more girls and one boy started today. At noon Evelyn and I met Donna Lou at YMCA and ate lunch with her. I worked very hard this afternoon. I got to take orchids to a couple girls today - - $10.00 ones at that. I came straight home after work. Mother went to Paulding, Ohio today with Aunt Elma. Dad and I ate supper alone. I did dishes then started on my formal. I have it pinned but not seMon at waist and hem and zipper to put in yet. I also started to make the mitts. I still haven't gotten the letter Charlie said he mailed last Saturday. Well, its after 10 and I am very sleepy so night.
June 21, 1946 (Fri)
It was a nice day today. Miss O'Rourke wasn't in today and Miss McCrory wasn't there from 10:30 till 12. Dorothy and I didn't do too much work - mostly just sat and talked. Evelyn, Janet and I ate lunch in the snack bar and then Evy and I went downtown and shopped around some more. I worked pretty hard this afternoon. After work Evie and I went downtown and got her a new swimming suit. Cute two piece. I got home about 6. This evening Carl and Esther Snyder came over. Brought me a pair of shortie pajamas. Esther pinned the pleats in on the skirt of my formal. I got a slip for graduation from Bob and June Klinger too today. I washed my hair and went to bed about 10:30.
June 22, 1946 (Sat)
I got up at 8. It seemed funny being home on a weekend for a change. I seMon on my formal this morning - just the zipper and the hem yet to do. I put on my bathing suit and Midge, Dave, and I laid out in the sun for half an hour but I didn't get the least bit of sunburn. I got cleaned up and met Evie and Johnny downtown at 1:30 (I didn't know Johnny was going to be there) I got a cute pair of white sandals for the Monding and frosted water glasses for one of the showers, wrapping paper and ribbon. I got home about 5. I helped Mother straighten house up a little. Then I got cleaned up. Charlie came about 9. We saw "Our Hearts Were Growing Up". Good too. We got some hot dogs. Got home about 12 and ate hot dogs and pop then. It was after 1 when Charlie left.
June 23, 1946 (Sun)
It was 9:30 when I got up. This morning I blew bubbles for Midge, moMon the front lawn, gabbed with the neighbors in the backyard and baked a pineapple upside down cake. This afternoon I got cleaned up and polished my nails. Aunt Ida, Lu and Ken Benson and their son, Chick (all from Erie) came with Don and Nancy. About 6 Charlie, Dot And Bob came. (Didn't know Dot and Bob were coming) We ate supper. About 7 Charlie and I went for a ride in the country - me driving. I drove for 15 miles - more fun. Then Dot, Bob, Charlie and I went to see "Bride Wore Boots." Pretty good. Afterwards we went for a ride. We got home about 12 and Charlie, Dot and Bob left about 12:30.
June 24, 1946 (Mon)
Gosh, it was hard to get up this morning. It was very warm out today. We started quite a few days which meant work forms. Janet, Evelyn and I ate lunch in the snack bar. Then Evie and I went downtown. We tried on some play suits, but didn't buy any. After work we met Betty Jane and Lucile at the Bridal Room (W and D's) and tried to decide on something for hair - no decision. Lucile came home with me. We ate, got ready and Mom took us over to Evelyn's for the shower. All 16 girls came who were invited. We certainly had a lot of fun. Betty got a lot of nice things, but she liked the nightie the best. She is just crazy about it. Mother took Lucy and Mary Berles home and we got in bed about 12:45.
June 25, 1946 (Tues)
Another sleepy day for me. I worked just pretty hard today. Janet wasn't here this afternoon so Evelyn and I ate lunch by ourselves in the snack bar. At noon Evie and I went to W and D's - we still haven't decided on headdresses - tomorrow for sure. After work this evening we rather I got for Betty's kitchen shower this evening an egg beater, 2 large spoons, a pancake turner and large fork. We also got my pictures from Howard. All 24 are good - those are the ones taken in Ohio. I got home at 6. Mother and Dad took me down to Job's Daughters at 7. We practiced till 8 then Betty Lou, Marilyn Long, Evie and I went to Janet and Nancy's shower for Betty. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Barbara Widdifield's Dad brought me home. I got to bed about 11:45.
June 26, 1946 (Wed)
Oh these night hours! I guess I just wasn't made to be a night owl. Miss O'Rourke and Miss McCrory called Dorothy and I into their office and said they were going to get me a desk and typewriter too so I must be going to stay in that department for awhile which suits me just fine. Evelyn and I ate lunch in snack bar then downtown about head dresses. We ordered the darlingest ones - ribbon and halo effect - matron of honors in net. Didn't work too hard this afternoon. I came straight home from work - got home about 5. After I finished I started on my mitts. Just about finished mine - very nice. Mother put zipper in my dress and started on hem - gosh, it looks nice. Roy and Alma were over for awhile. Betty and Erv came over for a few minutes. I pressed a skirt and shined shoes. Got to bed at a quarter of 11.
June 27, 1946 (Thurs)
Man, was it hot today at work. Dorothy and I got our new desks. Very neat - small dark green steel trimmed in gray and my chair just matches. We have the office all torn up now. Evelyn and I ate lunch in snack bar. I cracked crystal on my watch - took it down to Cousins at noon. Also bought wrapping paper and ribbon. I didn't work too hard this afternoon - things are still mixed up. I came straight home from work. This evening I started making the matron of honor's mitts - I certainly hope they fit her. Mother finished my dress today - I'm glad that's done. I also washed my hair and caught up on my bookkeeping for Job's Daughters. Barbara Widdifield and Anna May Hultz were out for awhile. Its 25 out of ten so night now.
June 28, 1946 (Fri)
It rained practically all day - just poured down this afternoon. I met Mother at the YMCA at noon and we ate lunch there. We went to Wolf and D's then and got a beautiful light blue all wool blanket for Betty for her Monding present - $10.98. I only worked till 4 this afternoon then I went down to Wolf and D's and picked up our ribbon halos for our hair. They are very cute. I got home about 5. I got cleaned up right away and put on my blue formal for Job's Daughters. Mother and Dad took me down to the Cathedral at 6:15 for rehearsal. Erv's family was there from New York. Rehearsal went over pretty good. Then they took me to Job's Daughters for the formal installation. They and Dorothy (she came up on the bus) came after me at 9. I finished getting ready this evening - cut crepe paper and painted signs. I got to bed about 11:30.
June 29, 1946 (Sat)
I got up at a quarter after 6. I was a little nervous but finally got ready - Mother, Dot, Margaret and Midge went to the Monding. Betty certainly looked beautiful - the whole Monding was. We had a taxi (decorated too) for the 2nd car - we rode around from 8:30 till 9 then had our pictures taken at Barnes. Jake (taxicab driver) picked us up at a quarter of 10, and we went out to Candlelight for the Monding breakfast. Then back over to Greenwoods for a small party for immediate family and Monding party. Betty certainly got a lot of nice things. Her father didn't go to the Monding or wasn't at the house - I think that is terrible. Mother Dad and Dot came after me about 2. We took Evelyn home and then went over to Ray and Alma's. This evening Howard, Ahleen and girls were over and Esther and Carl, Alma and Roy too. Bob and Charlie got here about 9:30. Dot met Dot Gremaux and we went to see "One More Tomorrow." Got home about 12. They left about 1.
June 30, 1946 (Sun)
I got up about 8:30, but slept a little this morning. About 11 Mother and Dad decided to go to Dorothy's for dinner so we got cleaned up and left about 11:30. Got there about 1. After dinner Charlie came over, and we went for a ride out past Long Lake (swimming resort) and over to Devon Brubakers. I'm going to get him a blind date with Oddra. We went over to Christman's and then left for Fort Wayne about 6. I drove all the way back to Ft. Wayne - more fun. I fixed a little lunch for Charlie and I and then about 8 we went to see "Somewhere in the Night" - pretty good. We rode around for awhile and then came home. Charlie proposed to me this evening, but I didn't give him a definite answer. It certainly did thrill me. He wanted to buy me a diaSatd right away but I would rather wait for awhile. He left about 1.
