Another nice warm day. The temperatures were in the 80's all day. Charlie went back over to the folks to plant soy beans, and I washed. Charlie is afraid he'll have to replant some of his corn - golly. I hope not. This afternoon I ironed, did some mending and put clothes away. I also washed a few things out by hand. It was late before Charlie got home. We did chores, ate supper and then to bed.
June 2, 1949 (Thurs)
I took Charlie over to the folks about 7:30 - he disked corn ground there this morning, stopped past Dot's to see if she wanted anything fom Bracken and went to the grocery and home. I did breakfast dishes, fed Mike and got us cleaned up. We got back over to Dot's about 9:30, but she wasn't ready. I had to wait till after 10. It was about 11 before we got to Mother's. Dot washed blankets. We ate a lunch and it was almost 3 before we went downtown. First, I bought Mike a Taylor-tot (one of his birthday presents), and I had his picture taken at Kendale Studios - they took 8 poses and they were really good I think. He was very happy about it all. I also bought an egg poacher at Hillmans. At the Juvenile Shop I bought Mike a little yellow knit suit - the pants are plain yellow and short and the top is a yellow and white figured - it looks so sweet on him - oh yes, little white anklets with yellow and white figured tops too. I also bought him a pair of playtex panties, a plastic apron and a red and white checked sunsuit. It was almost 6 when we got back out to Mom's. We ate supper, and it was after 8 before we left and by the time I got home it was 9:30. Charlie was just finishing his supper. We ate bananas and ice cream and then to bed. Oh yes, I found out today Dot is going to have another baby - in December. They are certainly going to have a family in a hurry.
June 3, 1949 (Fri)
Charlie finished disking his corn ground here today. This morning I did dishes, and straightened up the house. I mopped and waxed the kitchen floor and gathered lettuce, radishes and onions out of the garden and cleaned them. Mike slept a great deal today. We had waffles for dinner. This afternoon dishes again and I gave Mike a bath and I got cleaned up. We went to N. Manchester. I put my egg check in the bank, paid Westafers for the 2 tires we still owed the, bought some more screen and braces for the screen door, paid Moser for botle gas and went to the locker and grocery. I also tried to find some tomato plants but couldn't. I got home about 4:30, put Mike back to bed and rested a little. I made starwberry shortcake then and helped Charlie start chores. It started raining about 6 and just poured the rest of the evening. Dot, Bob and boys got here about a quarter till 8. We had fish, French fried potatoes, lemonade, salad and strawberry shortcake with whipped cream. Afterwards we played some euchre and it was about 11:30 when they left.
June 4, 1949 (Sat)
Kinda lazy today - too tired from yesterday, I guess. Charlie finished putting the screen and braces on the screen - then Ray came down and they talked for at least an hour and then they say women talk so much. This afternoon Charlie went over to the folks and he, Ray and Bob got their cultivators and mower out. I cleaned eggs this afternoon and thats just about all. We finished chores pretty early and after supper went over to the folks and took baths. Mike took a bath with Charlie and had a big time. We were home and in bed by a quarter till 10. We got a letter from Anna May.
June 5, 1949 (Sun)
We got up at 20 after 5 and started chores - I even milked most of Evy Lou. We got cleaned up and left home about 7. We had to wait on 2 freight trains in Sidney so we were 5 minutes late to 7:30 Mass at Pierceton. The church was so packed - people were standing up so we just went on the the lake. We got there about 8. Buryel took care of Mike while Charlie and I went fishing, but I only caught one fish - Charlie got 7. We came in for dinner about noon. Dot and Bob were there. The lake got pretty rough this morning and was still rough this afternoon so I didn't go fishing. Charlie went and caught only 3 little ones. Bob had some work to do at home so he left about 4. Charlie and I took the folks' car and came home to do chores. We left the lake at 4:30, got home at 5, finished chores at 6 and were back up to the lake at 6:30 - not bad. I milked Evy Lou again. Harriet and Bud and Fern were there when we got back. We ate a lunch and then Dot, Charlie and I went fishing in one boat and Harriet and Bud in another. Dot got 3, I one and Charlie none. We staryed on the lake till it was so dark we couldn't see our bobbers. The lake had calmed down by then. We went in then and while Charlie cleaned fish, Dot popped popcorn and we played a little euchre. We took Dot, Bobby and Johnny home and then Charlie and I and Mike came home and to bed.
June 6, 1949 (Mon)
Goodness, but I was tired today. I just straightened up the house, did dishes etc. this morning. This afternoon I cleaned eggs and gave Mike a bath. He still weighs only 16 1/2 lbs. About 4:30 Mike and I went to N. Manchester. We bought tomato, mango and pimiento plants. I also went out to Bolingers and got some things for Charlie and bought Mike a red plastic tractor for his birthday (its just like the big Harvester tractors - the steering wheel even turns). I also found a remnant of brown chambray material (not quite a yard) for 35 cents. I already have a little brown and white striped chambray so with both I believe I'll have enough to make Mike a pair of overalls and a sunsuit. We got home about 5:30 and Charlie had just started chores. So for a change, we ate supper fairly early. Then Charlie had a gilt he had to take to a bore so he was gone all evening anyway. I cut Mike's sunsuit and overalls out and then put him to bed and had just gone to bed myself at a quarter till 10 when Charlie came home. I forgot to mention that we lost part of the grill off our car coming home last night - what next?
June 7, 1949 (Tues)
Charlie went over to the folks today to cultivate corn, and I washed. It was a nice day for both. I finished washing about 9:30 and gave Mike his breakfast then. I washed breakfast dishes then, finished hanging up clothes, dampened some, and got dinner. I made Texas Hash and raisin-bran muffins. I also fixed a tomato salad and peaches. This I took over to Charlie and Mike and I ate dinner with him over there. I talked to Dot while I was there. I came home then and did dishes and then ironed. I had quite an ironing, but finally managed to struggle through. Then I did my mending, put clothes away and cleaned eggs. Charlie got home about a quarter till 8 and we set out the plants then. We started chores at 8:30 and it was 10 before we ate supper. Goodness but I was tired tonight. We got a letter from Betty Jane - they are coming down Wed. eve.
June 8, 1949 (Wed)
Charlie went over to cultivate corn this morning and came home about 11 for dinner. The eggman came this morning, I did dishes and baked a peach upside down cake. I also mowed part of the back lawn. After dinner I took (oh yes, I also gave the rooms a good cleaning) Charlie over to Bob's. They made hay over there this afternoon. I came back home, did my dishes and mowed some more of the lawn. I went over to the folks and sewed on Mike's overalls and a dress of mine. I stopped back past Dot and Bob's about 5:15 to see how they were coming. Bob said they would probably be done around 6:30 or 7:00 so I came on home. Bobby wanted to come with me so I let him. I cleaned Mike and myself up and fed Mike and Bobby and about 6:30 we left here and met Dot and Charlie on their way here at 114. So I went on over to Bracken and got a few groceries. Dot came over there and got Bobby. He wanted to come back with me - he and Mike were having a big time. After I got back home I had just started helping Charlie do chores when Betty, Erv and Sue came. They brought Mike a little wooden pull wagon with 14 big wooden blocks in it for his birthday - very cute. He certainly liked it. After Charlie finished chores we ate some toasted cheese sandwiches, potato chips and pepsi cola and just talked. Betty and Erv left a little after 10 and we went to bed soon after.
June 9, 1949 (Thurs)
Michael's birthday - he is one year old today. I guess he wanted to start celebrating early 'cause he woke up at 5:00 A.M. I finally got him back to sleep, and he slept most of the morning. He got birthday cards in the mail from Grandpa and Grandma Oliver and from Marjorie, David, Jimmy and Betty Ann. I finally woke Mike up at 10 so I could give him his breakfast and got to town. I got my dress from the Dry Cleaners, bought groceries, went to the Locker, bought a birthday card for Mike, a rubber ball and decorations for his cake. Charlie cultivated his corn over to the folks, but got home just after I did at noon. This afternoon I did dishes, cleaned eggs and baked Mike's birthday supper. I had just started helping Charlie do chores when his folks stopped by. They gave Mike $5. After chores, we had our birthday supper, and while I did dishes, Charlie went back out and cultivated some more. When we sang "Happy Birthday" to Mike at supper - time, he just grinned. We let Mike stay up till about 10 this evening. Dot, Bobby and Johnny stopped past about 9:30.
June 10, 1949 (Fri)
I washed this morning. A very nice washday. I was all done by a little after 9. The folks stopped past again this morning. Charlie was working on fences. This afternoon I ironed, did some mending and finished making Mike's overalls. Charlie cultivated corn till late tonight. Charlie's Dad helped him a little. We just did chores this evening, ate supper and then to bed.
June 11, 1949 (Sat)
It rained a little last night - Charlie went over to Bob's to help him today. Charlie's Dad finished cultivating his corn here this morning. I baked a peach pie this morning and cleaned my bedrooms. I took Charlie's Dad's car down to him at Rays and Ferns about 11:30. I talked to Fern and Stevie and then Dad brought Mike and I back home. This afternoon I cleaned the rest of the house, cleaned eggs and washed some things out by hand and washed my hair and gave Mike a bath. Charlie didn't get home till very late and it was about 11 when we went to bed

June 13, 1949 (Mon)
Dot called early this morning and Mom had called her and told her that Bernice Witte Huffman's youngest son had been struck by lightening yesterday at Blue Lake and was killed instantly. Charlie worked on fence this morning. This afternoon I straightened up the house, cleaned eggs and gave Mike a bath. This afternoon we planted flower seed - larkspur, zinnias, poppies, nastherums and pinks and petunias. Charlie did chores early and we went over after Dot and Bob about 7. They left Bobby and Johnny at Colclesser's. We went to Fort Wayne then and took Mike out to Betty and Erv's. They took care of him while we went to the funeral home to see Billy Huffman. We didn't stay very long. Back out to Betty and Erv;s - left there about 9:30, stopped past Howard and Ahleen's for a few minutes, then started for home. We stopped at the Bootjack on 24, had sandwiches and frosted malts and went on home. We stopped at Colclessers and got the boys, took Bob and Dot home and finally got home ourselves. It was about midnight when we got to bed.
I remember when Billy was killed. They were at their cabin at Blue Lake and had walked out to the water. Billy had left a baited fishing pole in the water and had caught a fish. He was carrying it home on a string. There was only one bolt of lightning and it was always thought that the fish attracted it. His dad was walking behind him and the lightning knocked him down and burnt his leg. I was around 13 when it happened. Billy was 8.

I had intended to wash, but it rained today so I didn't. Charlie finished his fences today that he has been working on. I did dishes and baked a chocolate cake this morning. Charlie's shoes came today from Spiegels and he just sent for them last Friday. We had peas out of our garden for dinner - they certainly were good. This afternoon I mopped and waxed the kitchen floor. I picked the rest of the peas that were ready in the garden and canned 3 pints in my pressure cooker. I cleaned yesterday and today's eggs then. After we did chores, we ate supper and I did dishes. I also washed out a few diapers. We went to bed about 10.
June 15, 1949 (Wed)
Still raining so I didn't wash again. We've had enough rain for now - I wish it would quit. Charlie, Mike and I went to the doctor the first thing this morning. He gave Mike his vaccination for smallpox. I weighed 120 so I only gained one pound this month - not bad. My blood pressure was still low - 90. While we were in S. Whitley we also paid electricity and telephone bills, sent money orders to Spiegels, for my insurance and Journal-Gazette. We also paid a soybean cleaning bill we had at Farmers Elevator. We went to N. Manchester then and bought groceries and took 2 pr. of Charlie's pants and his sport jacket to the dry cleaners. While Charlie got a haircut, Mike and I got some embroidery thread, a couple rolls of film, some Father Day cards and put a check in the bank. We got home about noon. We had wieners for lunch. This afternoon dishes, then I cleaned house while Charlie repaired a footstool and chair. I washed out some more diapers for Mike and helped Charlie do chores. I also started embroidering on a pair of pillowcases for Mother and Dad's 35th wedding anniversary - July 25th. I gave Mike a bath, got cleaned up myself and got supper. We had liver, french fried potatoes, baked beans, tomato salad, chocolate cake and coffee. Chalrie helped me do dishes and we finished at 8:30. Mike went to bed about 8 - we just listened to the radio then and I embroidered a little more. It was about 10 when we went to bed.
June 16, 1949 (Thurs)
Another rainy day. I'd like to see some sunshine for a change. Once again I put off my washing. I did wash a few things out by hand - mostly t-shirts and overalls for Mike. It was chilly enought for a fire all day. Mike's proofs came this morning, and they are very good. Its hard to choose which one is best. This afternoon I cleaned eggs, ironed Mike's overalls and straightened up the house. Charlie started chores pretty early so we ate supper about 6:30. I did dishes then and cleaned Mike and myself up. I embroidered a little and then Charlie and I played a game of pinochle - I won. Charlie popped popcorn and we ate that and drank pop. It was about 9:30 when we went to bed.
June 17, 1949 (Fri)
Still rainy but I washed anyway. However, between rains I did manage to get my washing dry. About 3:30 it cleared up and the sun shone so I finish drying the clothes then. Charlie mowed part of the lawn this morning. Mike was outside with him all morning. This afternoon Charlie went down to Rays. He has some hay mowed and they are going to try to put it in the silo. Dot, Bobby, and Johnny stopped past on their way home from town. They were here till about 2:30. After they left, I did dinner dishes, ironed and put clothes away. Charlie got home about 6. We did chores, ate supper and I did dishes. I gave Mike a bath and we went to bed about 10.
June 18, 1949 (Sat)
Charlie went down to Ray's today - they are putting his grass in the silo. I washed dishes, cleaned up the house, baked an angel food cake and iced it. It cleared up this afternoon - believe it or not - and the sun shone. Mike and I went first to N. Manchester. There I got Charlie's pants and sport jacket from the dry cleaners, bought strainer pads and lime for his stable and bought Charlie a small radio for Father's Day. He has been wanting one for in his barn. Its dark brown - an Admiral and it cost $14. 95. Then we went to Huntington and picked up the sign at Dick Christman's studio. No one was there, but Norman Christman came past just as I had gotten there. From Huntington we went to S. Whitley. I thought maybe the shoes I had ordered from Spiegels were there, but they weren't. It was 4:30 when we got home and both of us were hot and tired. After we got home, I put potatoes and eggs on the cook for potato salad for tomorrow. I also rinsed some diapers out for Mike. About 6:30 Francis North, his wife and two boys came down. Francis is going to do chores for us tomorrow night and had come down tonight to see how. However Charlie didn't get home till 9:00 so we just sat and talked. She certainly is a queer one - the boys are both cute - they don't look like either of their parents. Francis helped Charlie do chores this evening and so were finished at 10:00. About 10:30 they left, and I got Charlie something to eat, and then to bed.
June 19, 1949 (Sun)
We got up fairly early and did chores. I finished making potato salad and cleaned carrots and celery to take to the reunion. I also cleaned our shoes and did the dishes and fed Mike his breakfast. Charlie took his radio to the barn and had it playing while he did chores - he was very pleased with it. About 9 we went over to the folks to take baths. No one was home, but we used their bathroom anyway. We were just about ready to leave when the folks and Harriet and Bud came. They had just come in from the lake. Charlie had forgotten his belt so we had to come back home after it. It was about 10:30 when we got to the reunion - it was at Charlie's great-uncle Albert Strickler and his wife Gertie. They live near Urbana. There were 99 people there altogether, and quite a few of them were babies. I believe the babies just about outnumbered the adults. We had a good time and lots to eat. We were going to go from there to the lake, but Charlie and Bud decided to mow the folks lawn first so we went over there and it was 6 before we got to the lake. Ray, Fern and Stevie came right after we did - then the folks with Uncle Horace and Aunt Ursula and Dot, Bob, Bobby and Johnny. We went fishing, but didn't do too good. I only caught 3 and Charlie caught 7 so we got enough for a meal anyway. It was late before we left and got home and to bed. Mike was so tired.
June 20, 1949 (Mon)
I straightened up the house, did dishes, picked peas and shelled them. Charlie took our car to town to have it worked on. It sprung a leak in the gas tank yesterday. This afternoon I did the dishes again and Mike and I took Charlie down to Ray's. Ray has a load of hay he said Charlie could have so Charlie and Ray loaded it. It was 3 before I got back home. I canned 2 pints of peas in the pressure cooker and made some fudge. Charlie came back about 5 with his load of hay. While Mike slept, I drove the tractor to pull up the hay for Charlie and then we started chores. After supper, I did dishes and then embroidered a little before going to bed.
June 21, 1949 (Tues)
A beautiful wash-day so I washed. Charlie spent most of the morning putting his cultivators back on his tractor and then he cultivated the garden. This aftrnoon he went down to Ray's and helped him work on the hayrake. I ironed and put clothes away. It rained a little this afternoon. I had my washing all dried by then. Mike went out to the barn with us while we did chores. He gets such a kick out of it. While Charlie finished milking, I cleaned eggs. We ate supper, I did dishes and then to bed. Letters from Aunt Elma and Dorothy M.
June 22, 1949 (Wed)
Charlie went down to Ray's again this morning to help make hay so Mike and I were alone. I cleaned the house up this morning. The eggman came - I had 27 dozen eggs for him - 55 cents this week. I ate lunch and fed Mike and cleaned Mike and myself up. The garageman was supposed to bring our car back this afternoon and I was going to take him back to N. Manchester, but he never did show up. I embroidered on the pillowcases quite a bit this afternoon. About 5 Dot, Bobby, Johnny and Norma Colclesser stopped by. They had been to N. Manchester and down to Ray's. It was around 6:30 when Charlie got home. We did chores, I cleaned eggs, ate supper, I did dishes and then to bed.
June 23, 1949 (Thurs)
I called Carters this morning at 7 about our car. They said they would have it here at 8:00, but 9:00 they still hadn't. Dot called and wanted to know what happened - she called Carters and we finally decided to got to Ft. Wayne in their car. Kinda crowded, but we made it. We stopped at Mother's about 11. Didn't stay too long there - we went over to Ahleen's then. We were there for lunch - Ahleen gave Dot a home permanent. Right after lunch I took Ruthie, Kay and Georgia to the library and Mike and I went to the grocery. Then Ruth Ann, Mike and I went downtown. I took Mike's proofs back and bought myself a pair of white wedgie shoes. They are very dressy and are far more comfortable now than my high heels. We had a coke then and it was about 5 when we got back to Howard and Ahleen's. We went out to Mothers and Dad then again. They were getting already to leave on their vacation tomorrow night - they are going to Michigan fishing. We left about 7 and got home about 8. Charlie was doing chores so I got supper for us. It was rather late then when we got to bed. We got a letter from Betty and Erv - they are leaving tomorrow for Utica, NY, for Erv's sister's wedding which is Saturday. They are going to stay a couple of weeks - all these lucky people going on vacation. I only wish we could.
June 24, 1949 (Fri)
Charlie cultivated soy beans and corn over to the folks today. This morning I wrote letters to Aunt Elma and Betty Jane. Dishes then and mopped and waxed the kitchen floor and straightened up the rest of the house. This afternoon I cleaned eggs and baked some ice-box cookies (not so good). It was rather late before Charlie got home. We did chores, ate supper, I did dishes and then to bed.
June 25, 1949 (Sat)
Today is Harriet's birthday (23rd) and hers and Bud's 2nd wedding anniversary. Also, Ervin Knott's birthday. It rained off and on today, but I did manage to wash and dried outdoors. Charlie cultivated over to the folks again today. Buryel stopped by this morning - I guess we'll go up to the lake tomorow to celebrate Harriet's birthday and anniversary. I also did part of my ironing this morning. This afternoon I finished my ironing, cleaned eggs, did a little mending, gave Mike a bath, washed my hair. It was 8 before Charlie got home. I helped him start chores, then I baked date-nut bread. We ate supper and then to bed.
June 26, 1949 (Sun)
We didn't get up till a quarter of 6, but we hurried and did chores (I even milked part of a cow). I did last night's dishes. We got cleaned up and left here about 7. We went to 7:30 Mass at Pierceton - low mass. Harriet, Ray, Fern and Stevie were there too. Mike was very good. We stopped on the way to Webster Lake and bought a watermelon and couple muskmelons. Mike went to sleep after we got to the lake so Charlie and I went fishing. I only caught 2, but both nice perch - one was nine inches long. Charlie also got 2 - one perch and one red ear - but both nice size. We ate dinner then. Harriet and I did the dishes and then Mike and I took a blanket down by the lake front and laid on it. All the men went fishing again. They weren't having any luck so they came back in and dragged some of the weeds in front of the cottage out into the lake. Charlie went back out fishing about 4 and came in with 3. About 6 Fern, Stevie, her folks and her sister, Lois and her boyfriend came in from Goshen. It was about a quarter after when we left and about 8 when we got home. We did chores and then to bed. This afternoon I took Mike out on the dock and left him dangle his feet in the water. He just loved it, but he got mad at me because he couldn't get all the way in. Margaret, Jess and children had been here and left me some cherries.
June 27, 1949 (Mon)
This morning I did dishes, canned the cherries (got 7 pints), picked peas and shelled them for dinner. This afternoon dishes again, I cleaned eggs and mended a pair of Charlie's overalls. There was a Farm Bureau meeting this evening, but Charlie helped Ray make hay and we didn't get around in time. I took Charlie over to the folks at noon ( he had intended bringing the tractor home and cultivating). I stopped to see Dot, and the boys. They had company yesterday. It was after 8 before we ate supper. Then dishes and bed.
June 28, 1949 (Tues)
Today is Jess' birthday. This morning I did breakfast dishes and baked an cherry pie. Charlie went to town to get repairs for the mower. It was so terribly hot and humid too that I just didn't have a bit of energy. About 5 it cooled off a little so I went out and mowed lawn (I had started it yesterday). Still didn't get done though 'cause at 5:30 it started to rain. Charlie had been mowing his hay, but came up before it started raining. Lightning struck our telephone line and put it out of service. Charlie started chores about 6 so it was fairly early when we ate supper. Ray, Fern, and Stevie stopped past here on their way over to Wilfongs. After supper I did dishes, gave Mike a bath (he weighed almost 17 pounds) and put him to bed. Charlie went to sleep in a chair and I on the davenport, but it was about 10:30 when we went to bed.
June 29, 1949 (Wed)
Betty and Erv's 3rd wedding anniversary. Charlie mowed hay again this morning. The eggman came and then Mike and I got cleaned up and went to N. Manchester. I went to the grocery and also bought gray paint, window screens, border and paper drapes for the bedroom upstairs. I also bought Mike 2 pair of seersucker pajamas and a birthday card for David. It was just before 12 when we got home. It rained a little this afternoon. I got a lunch for us and Charlie went back out mowing and I did dinner dishes. I went upstaris then a painted part of the woodwork - what an improvement! It was about 6:30 before we started chores - I left Mike out in the barn with Charlie and came back in and finished painting the woodwork and put the undercoast on one end of the bed. Charlie went over to Bracken and bought a case of pop and some ice cream. It was almost 10 before we finished supper. I was too tired so we just went to bed.
June 30, 1949 (Thurs)
A nice sunshiny day, but oh so warm! I washed this morning. Charlie raked hay. This afternoon I did my ironing and then went upstairs and painted the undercoat on the dresser and the rest of the bed. I think it was over 100 up there - so very hot. Charlie and Ray took a load of hay up, and then about 6 I helped unload it - I drove the tractor to pull the hay up in the mow. We finished about a quarter till 7 and we started chores. I cleaned my eggs and fed Mike his supper. We ate supper about 9 and then to bed. I was so very tired.
