November 1, 1945 (Thurs)

Rowene Crabill gave her floor talk on William Rose Beast in English. I typed a stencil 2nd period for Mrs. Reeves. I got sick then and went down and got an excuse from Miss Gross to come home. I called Mother and she came after me. I took my pills but they didn't help much so Mother called the doctor this afternoon - he came out about 2 and then of course, I felt better. I got a letter from Dwight dated Oct. 23rd (he said he'll be home about March now) and one from Phyllis Hite. Mother went to school - got a book for me. Walter Helmke called me and wanted "Western Star" so he came over after that. I appointed Janet Lee for temp for SPC. I read "Seventeen" today and this evening I went through my floor talk - gosh it's long - around an hour. I didn't feel very good so I went to bed a little after 9.

November 2, 1945 (Fri)

Back to school today. We had a musical assembly right after homeroom. Then - English and I started on my floor talk. I talked for 45 minutes and I'm still not finished. It will probably take me a 1/2 hour more on Mon. Oddra and I ran a stencil off on the mimeograph machine 2nd period. I worked at the desk in Library 3rd. I gave a report in Economics on Dutch East Indies. Pat and I ate lunch in cafeteria and then went outside. Gee it was nice out. We had a typing test 7th period. I don't know how I did on it - but it wasn't very good. After school I went to the Library and then took the SPC dues down to Mr. Reeves. This evening Bob was here again. I read poetry for my term paper "World Travel" and wrote a letter to Dwight. Its getting late now - bye.

November 11, 1945 (Sun)

I didn't get up till a quarter of 11 this morning. Isn't that terrible? I really got plenty of sleep last night. After we ate breakfast at 11 then I got dressed, redded the table up and built a fire in the utility room. I cut out the doll material for the doll for Marjorie for Christmas. This afternoon I worked on my Shorthand, and Economics and also on my term paper. Bob and Dot came home about 6. Bob's uncle gave Dot and Bob the 200 wedding invitations as a wedding present. November 13, 1945 (Tues)

The school year was divided into two semesters-the first was B and the second A. Because Betty was a Senior A in the fall semester, she finished her high schoool requirements at the end of the fall semester. —Kay Bazin

Still floor talks in English. We got our Senior polls in homeroom. All the Senior A's are going together and make their ballots out alike and vote for just senior A's and not B's. I typed a stencil 2nd period. I worked at the desk in the library 3rd period. Mr. Young was only here for part of 4th - we listened to prime Minister Atlee of England speak. Pat, Oddra and I ate lunch in the cafeteria. We had a test in Shhd. 6th - I think I made 100 on part of it - I hope. After school I went over to Betty's and we counted the votes and made the lists up for another vote in homeroom tomorrow. Then Mrs. Greenwood brought me home. I jsut studied the evening then from 9:00 till 10:30. Mom, Dad, Dot and Bob and I just talked. Its after 11 now. Night.

November 14, 1945 (Wed)

The Senior B's are very mad at the Senior A's and want our ballots thrown out. We had another vote in H.R. More floor talks in English. This evening I studied my Shhd, worked on my term paper and wrote letters to Dwight and Jackie. I've got to go to bed now so I can get my beauty sleep. good-night.

November 15, 1945 (Thurs)

We gathered all the ballots up in homeroom. We took all 40 of our ballots down to Miss Gross (dean) and she took them to the Legend room to be counted personally. She is back of us Senior A's. Boy are the Senior B's mad! Still floor talks in English. I did some typing for Mrs. Pennington 2nd period. Then Oddra and I went to deliver the papers to Mr. Pennington - Met Pat, went to her locker till bell rang. Then I had to dash back to Cl. Practice - Betty and I went to our lockers and just barely made it for Library. I worked at the desk today. Pat, Oddra, and I went outside after we had finished eating. We are starting letter transcription in Shhd. and Typing. After school I went downtown - got Mother a slip for her birthday (it's today - she's 50) and Betty and lime blouse (her birthday is Sun. - she'll be 18). I met Dot and Bob and came home with them. The Seniors had an assemble right after homerooms and they have decided to buy an electric football scoreboard as our project for this year. Betty and I ran a stencil off in Cl. Practice - then we delivered it and went up to our lockers while Betty opened her present. She really liked it. I worked at desk in Lib. 3rd - gave a report in Economics 4th. Oddra stayed and ate lunch with Pat and I today. A bunch of boys threw a dead skunk at us by Sandy's. I made 90 and 100 on a test in Shhd. After school I went to Miss Huffman's room and got some more material for my term paper. This evening I worked on my Shorthand a little while. Mother and Dad went and got some ice cream and we ate that. Bob stayed all night again. I went to bed about 10.

This afternoon I finished doing my Shhd. and started on my term paper. I stopped then and Mother and I did dishes. I washed some clothes out by hand then - and washed my hair. Bob and Dot came home then - Bob got a car this morning - 38 Chrysler. This evening I worked on my term paper, tinted on of my Senior pictures, read magazines, took my shower and went to bed. Bob and Dot went to 11 o'clock church. Mother and Dad went after chickens. I peeled potatoes while they were gone. After dinner Mother, Dot and I washed the dishes. I worked on my term paper a little more, then I did my Economics and wrote letters to Betty Morris and Dwight. Dot and Bob went down to North Manchester this afternoon. I didn't do much this evening except clean combs and eat. Its 10:30 now and Bob and Dot aren't back from North Manchester yet. They both have to work tomorrow too. Well, I'm going to sleep now. Night.

November 19, 1945 (Mon)

I worked in library this morning during homeroom. I wonder if we will ever got through our floor talks in English. I took a couple typing tests in Cl. Practice - did terrible on both - strikeovers on them. We had Phys. Fit 3rd and Betty and Evelyn sat me on the water fountain and turned the water on. But, I got off before I got wet. Pat wasn't here today so I ate lunch with Evelyn, Donna Lou and Dolores. We had dictation in Shhd (unusual?) and typing test in Typing - I made 53 wpm with 80% accuracy on it. After school I worked in the library. I got a package from Dwight (my Xmas present) It had 2 bottles of perfume from Paris in it. Really good stuff. I studied on my term paper this morning. Took my shower and got to bed about 11.

November 20, 1945 (Tues)

I guess today was the last of the floor talks - I certainly hope so. I worked on the Comptometer in Cl. Practice - subtractions. I worked at the desk in Lib. 3rd. Betty and I talked most of the period. We had to work on a bank statement in Economics 4th. Pat, Oddra and I ate lunch in cafeteria then went outside and mailed letters. We had reading tests in Shhd. 6th and Mrs. Chapman accused me of telling Betty the words when I hadn't said a word. I told her so too so later she let us take the test over. We had a typing test and I made about 57 wpm. I went to play tryouts after school and Miss Suter took just the girls who have 7th off - boy did that ever burn us up! I got a letter from Jackie. I studied my Shhd. and embroidered the face on that doll for Midge. I took my shower and went to bed about 11.

November 21, 1945 (Wed)

I got a letter from Dwight dated Nov. 11. He got my Xmas package already. His colonel is trying to have them classified as essential men so they'll have to stay. That disgusts me and Dwight too. We got to work on our term paper during English. We got our report cards today. I got: English 1 A-, Cl Practice B+, Phys Fit B, Economics A, Shhd. B+ and Typing A. Mrs. Bridges told me that I would have gotten an A- in Cl. Practice if Betty and I were a little more cooperative. We had Phys. Fit 3rd and got a big bawling out from Waterson. At first she gave me a C+, but found out it was a mistake. We had Current Events in Economics 4th. Pat and I ate in cafeteria 6th then went outside even though it was raining. We had shortened period this afternoon and then a very cute pep session. I bought my season basketball ticket and one for tonights game then also. The game was terrible. We beat them. We left the game early went downtown to Ty Notch and then came home. Mom met me at the busline. Its after 11 now. Janet wasn't in school today - attack of appendicitis. 1st time she has missed since she started at N.S.

November 22, 1945 (Thurs)

Happy Thanksgiving Day! I didn't get up till a quarter of 9. Bob and Dot had already left for North Manchester. Just Mother, Dad and I were for Thanksgiving dinner. This is the first year that I can remember that we didn't have company or go to somebody's house for dinner. We do have a lot to be thankful for this year - victory mainly. This afternoon I typed my term paper up - its all finished now, and I wrote letters to Dwight and Jackie. This evening Dad and I played cribbage at 5 cents a game. I won 15 cents from him. There was a cartoon in tonight picture that I thought was particularly fitting. A group of pilgrims at the table giving thanks - a turkey on the table - victory - the fire in fireplace. Best system of government yet devised, gun over fireplace "Our possesion of the Atomic Bomb and the land outside the wondow - A Land of Opportunity. It was entitled "Much to Be Thankful For"

November 23, 1945 (Fri)

I got up about 7. Mother took Dad and Dot to work and stopped at Howard and Ahleen's on the way back so she didn't get back till about 8:30. I redded the table up and started ironing about 8. I ironed till 11. Margaret brought David and Jimmie over and we took care of them till about 2. Mother and I went downtown then. We ordered the 3 tier wedding cake from Bon Ton and I got 2 new blouses - a white one and a lime one - both pretty, natch, and a new pair of black high boots. We went out after Dad then and came home. Dot got a beautiful comforter from the people at work. One of them soft satin ones. I took care of the kids this evening from about 7 to 8 - made 50 cents. I washed my hair this evening. Jim and Millie came over for awhile.

"Redding up" a table means to clear it of dirty dishes, etc. Possibly Grandma Hazel (or maybe Grandma Christman or both) used that term.

November 24, 1945 (Sat)

I got up about 8. We went downtown about 9. Mother and Dad left me off at the Library and I started working on my essay "Should the Government Guarantee Full Employment?" After I worked on that for over an hour I went to downtown and started my Xmas shopping. I cashed my government check $46.63. I bought 31 Xmas cards, $1.39, a box of stationery for myself, a compact for Ahleen, a pair of earrings for Janet, a bath powder for Nancy and a bracelet for either Pat or Oddra. I got home about 1. Mother and I straightened the house up this afternoon. Dot was baptized this afternoon and is now a Catholic. This evening I took care of Marjorie, David and Jimmie from 9 - 12:30 - made a $1. I had to hold Jimmie most of the time. I got to bed about 2.

November 25, 1945 (Sun)

I got up about 8:30 this morning. I just worked on my Shorthand. Mother and Dad put the linoleum up on the bathroom shower. We tried to put the stencil "Don't Forget" on the blackboard but it didn't work. We had chicken for dinner. After dinner we did dishes and Mother and Dad went away with Alma and Roy. Dot and Bob went to the show. This afternoon I typed my Economics up and read part of "Sixty Million Jobs" by Henry Wallace. I took my shower and then decided to make fudge. I put in 2 cups instead of 1 so I had to add more sugar and cocoa, but it turned out pretty good. I went to bed about 11.

November 26, 1945 (Mon)

I worked in the Library this morning during homeroom. We handed our term papers in today and she informed us that our essays are due Fri. instead of next Mon. I took typing tests 2nd period, but did terrible on them. I forgot my gym suit so I had to wear a pair of Betty's shorts. Pat and I ate lunch in cafeteria (Unusual, huh?) We had dictation of 5 letters in Shhd. and then we were supposed to transcribe them 7th, but I only got 2 transcribed. I just can't do it. I worked in the Library after school and was going down to public library but changed my nind. This evening I did a little Shhd (very little) and worked on my essay. I don't think I'll ever get it done. Its a quarter of 10 and I want to be in bed by 10 so good-night, dear diary.

November 27, 1945 (Tues)

We got to go to the Lib. and work on our essays 1st period today. We typed lists of Latin classes in Cl. Practice. I worked at the desk in the Lib. 3rd period. I wrote notes to Pudgie all 4th. She is going to be my stand-in for the wedding in case I'm sick that day. Pudgie, Pat and I ate lunch in cafeteria. We had a test in Shhd. 6th - I had 100 on theory and 100 on transcription. We had to change typewriters in Typing class. After school I went to the public library, was there till 7:30 - Oddra came about a quarter of 7. Bob and Dot picked us up at 7:30 and we came home and Pudgie tried on my dress - it fits her too. We took her home about 7:30 then I finished my Shhd. and took a shower and went to bed.

November 28, 1945 (Wed)

This morning Mother told me to stay home from school and make the mitts for the wedding. Naturally I didn't argue. So this morning I made the mitts and ironed a blouse - then I got ready and went to school this afternoon. I got there a little early so went to the cafeteria to see Pat. We had dictation in Shhd. 6th and transcribed the letters on the typewriter 7th. I always make a big mess out of those. After school I went down to school lib and worked on essay till 4. I met Janet and Nancy and came home then. This evening I wrote my theme and studied my Shhd. I also painted the workds "Don't Forget" on the blackboard Dad made for the kitchen. I got to bed about 11. Next Monday I'm going to be in bed by 9 just wait and see.

Mitts were dressy and went on the forarms, looked exactly like a long glove but did not cover the fingers, and a muff being totally different is like a round tube that you slide your hands in to keep them warm and are usually made of fur or wool and mitts were usually made from lace or satin and not necessarily made for warmth they were more a dressy fashion statement of the times.—Gin

November 29, 1945 (Thurs)

We had a substitue in Eng. so I wrote a letter to Jackie. 2nd period Betty and I started looking through stencils for 2. We had Dramatics 3rd period, but we didn't have to give our charactizations. We had a typing test in Typing and I typed 59.7 wpm with 92% accuracy. This evening I washed my hair and took a shower. Dad and I hung the crepe paper in the garage. On the bar we put "Duffy's Beer and Pop". I typed up my essay and did my Shorthand. It was after eleven before I went to bed.

November 30, 1945 (Fri)

We still have a substitute for English. We handed in our essays, then I did the rest of my Shorthand. Betty and I finished looking for the stencils - we didn't find them. We went and washed our hands near the end of the period and then didn't go back to class. I worked at the desk in Lib 3rd period. We had Current Events 4th period. Pat and I ate lunch in cafeteria. This afternoon we had transcription. After school I went home and made sis for on the car - on a large red heart with Bob and Dot on it, "Another Sucker" and "Just Married".
