Another chilly day. We had a few more girls starting this morning - another busy day. At noon I went downtown and bought dice, tallies and a shower gift card. Started a couple more girls this afternoon. After work I went straight home. Mother had the house all cleaned up and most of the food ready. Evelyn came about 7, then Anna May and Kathleen Messerschmidt. Kathleen Brenizer, Donna Lou, Pudge, Pat, Betty Lou, Marilyn, Janet, Nancy, June Hartman, and Betty Jane were also here. We played indoor golf, Kathleen opened her presents and Anna May, Evelyn and I got the refreshments ready. Most of the kids left about 11:30. Mom and I took Anna May and Kathleen M. home. They helped with dishes. It was after midnight when I got to bed.
October 2, 1946 (Wed)
A little warmer today. Had a couple more girls starting so we were busy again today. Evelyn and I ate lunch in the snack bar. I went to the bank and put in $10 - have $30.10 in bank now. We looked at skirts for Evelyn again. We came downtown again after work. I got nylons for Dorothy, Margaret and I at Wolf and D's. Mine are 51 gauge - very pretty. Dot and Bob were here when I got home. I returned cardtable to Betty and Steve. Mom and Dad canned a few apples. I had my hair all wet ready to put up and Charlie came. Mom, Dad, Dot and I learned Charlie to play cribbage - he beat me 3 out of 4. Dot, Charlie, and I played a game of bid euchre. Charlie left about a quarter of 12. Donna Lou called me.
October 3, 1946 (Thurs)
Quite a bit warmer today. Still had 2 girls starting today. I finished the labor report this morning which I started yesterday. At noon I met Mother and we picked our 2 storybook dolls for Kay's birthday. We also looked for a wedding present for Kathleen. We didn't have much to do this afternoon. Evelyn and I got Kathleen a clothes hamper after work. I got home about 6. I got a letter from Lucy today at last. Bill's on his way home. I also got bills from W and D's and Paris. This evening I just read magazines and listened to the radio. I put my hair up and went to bed around 9:30. I was tired - last 2 nights got me down.
October 4, 1946 (Fri)
We're having regular summer weather again - even better than what we had last August. We weren't very busy today. Miss McCrory and Miss O'Rourke left for Lansing, Michigan around 11:15. Evie, Helen and I ate lunch in snack bar. I bought a darling pair of low heeled dark brown suede slings for work. I wanted something I could wear with hose. Didn't have a thing to do this afternoon. I came straight home from work. Mother and Dad went to the lake for the weekend. This evening I worked a crossword puzzle in Seventeen and then I washed my hair and took a bath and went to bed about 10. Dottie stayed all night because she is going to work tomorrow morning.
October 5, 1946 (Sat)
I got up about 8:30. I didn't have much to do today either. I made my bed and straightened the house a little. I put some more pictures in my photograph album. Ahleen called me and so did Dottie. Midge was over quite a bit. I got cleaned up and went over to Donna Lou's. Wilma Krueger's father took us over to Bethany Presbyterian Church where we met Evie, Pudge, Pat, Betty Lou, Marilyn Long and her man. Kathleen certainly looked nice. Afterwards some boy took us in his car and followed Kathleen and Bill around then took us all home. Charlie came in a little after 8 and we stopped at the reception for a few minutes. Then we went over to Howard and Ahleen's and gave Kay her birthday present - she's 7 today. Howard, Ahleen, Charlie and I played cards till 12:30. I certainly enjoyed myself. Charlie left a little after 1.
October 6, 1946 (Sun)
Margaret woke me up about 9:30. Another nice warm day. After getting dressed and eating breakfast, I didn't have much of the morning left. I ate dinner over to Margaret's and helped her with dishes. This afternoon I got cleaned up, dusted and ran the sweeper, embroidered a little and listened to the radio and played solitaire and did dishes. Mother and Dad came home from the lake about 7:30. They had a nice weekend at the lake. Charlie, Bob and Dot came about 8. We stopped and got ice cream sodas and then went to Emboyd and saw Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in "The Time of Their Lives". Very funny. Afterwards we got hamburgers. It was after midnight when we got home. Bob and Charlie left about 12:30.
October 7, 1946 (Mon)
Still warm out. I didn't anymore than get to work when I got sick and had to come home. Mother came after me, also Marge and Dave. I was pretty sick by the time the doctor got here at 11:30. I slept most of the afternoon. I read newspapers, magazines, and finished reading the book "Up Front" by Bill Mouldin. Very good. I managed to get up and eat supper with Dot. Steve was over for a little while. I got dressed and Mom, Dad and I took Dot over to Howard and Ahleen's. I got kinda sick over there so we came home and I put my hair up and went to bed about 8:30 - I certainly got enough sleep today - maybe I'll make up for what I missed over the weekend.
October 8, 1946 (Tues)
Beginning to turn chilly again. We were busy all day. Everybody wanted to know how I felt - my stomach felt alright, but I think I have a touch of pleursy in my left shoulder, back and ribs - I've had pains in them all day. At noon Evie and I ate lunch with Helen in the snack bar. Helen certainly enlightened us on some of the facts of life. Stanley Kochlinger keeps flirting with me at work. I guess I'll have to tell him about Charlie one of these days. I came straight home from work. This evening Aunt Dessie called from Chicago - didn't want anything in particular. I read magazines and washed some nylons, yes, I said nylons, out by hand. Mother put Vicks Vapor-Rub on my back and ribs. Its a quarter after 9 so I had better go to bed.
October 9, 1946 (Wed)
About the same as it was yesterday - weather, I mean. We were fairly busy today. Evie, Helen and I ate lunch in the snack bar and then just went down to Linkendoefers. I started a letter to Lucile this afternoon. I came straight home from work tonight. Oh yes, Miss McCrory called me into her office and told me I got a $10 raise beginning Oct. 1st - I certainly was surprised, but happy. This evening I got cleaned up - Charlie came about 8. We played cribbage at 5 cents a game. He won 15 cents off of me. Ralph, Dorothy Franklin and the kids were over. Charlie left about 12. I went to bed at 12:30 and Franklin didn't leave till 2. I didn't feel so hot today - my rib and throat were both sore.
October 10, 1946 (Thurs)
A little warmer again today. We weren't very busy at all today. I finished my letter to Lucile and started one to Betty Jane this morning. Helen, Anna May, Evie and I ate lunch together. We met Mother downtown and we got a doll for Midge for her birthday next Monday. Miss McCrory and Miss O'Rourke went to a wedding this afternoon and I finished my letter to Betty Jane. Dot was waiting for me after work so I went downtown with her and looked at patterns. I got home about 6. I was pretty tired this evening and my rib hurt so bad so I just cleaned a comb, greased up with Vicks Vapor rub and put a hot water bottle on my rib and went to bed about 8:30.
October 11, 1946 (Fri)
Pretty chilly again today. We were fairly busy. Anna May, Evie, Helen and I ate lunch in the snack bar. It was raining at noon. Evie is going to teach Anna May and I how to knit. Dorothy took a half day's vacation and Miss McCrory and Miss O'Rourke left at 4. I came straight home from work. My rib still hurt me quite a bit today so Mother and Dad took me to the doctors. He said that it was probably pluersy since I had had a cold and sore throat. Just gave me pills to take and told me to put a hotwater bottle on it. After we got home I washed my hair and put my hair up. It was around 9:30 or 10 when I went to bed.
October 12, 1946 (Sat)
I got up about 7:30. Right after I ate breakfast I baked a peach upside down cake. It was a nice day but chilly outside. After dinner Dad and I went to the grocery store and to the dry cleaners. Finally got our clothes which had been there since July. Came home and got cleaned up. About 4:30 Dad and I went after Jess and picked Dot up at Howard and Ahleen's. Aunt Elma, Uncle Mac, Martha Adams, Ken and Chickie Benson were here for supper. Auntie brought me a pair of house slippers she made - cute. They left pretty early. Bob and Charlie came about 9. We went to Palace, saw "Lover Come Back." Got some hamburgers afterwards, then went over to Ray and Lavons where Mom and Dad were. Got home about 1 - they left about 1:30.
October 13, 1946 (Sun)
Mother called me around 8:30. I did very little of anything this morning - just read paper, magazines etc. Anna May called me this morning. Dad and I got dinner today. I got cleaned up and mom and I did dishes. Anna May, Barbara W. and Kathleen M. came after me about 2. We went roller-skating at Bell's Rink. It was fun being with girls for a change. Afterwards we went to Barbara's room (she's in Nurses Training at Methodist now) and then to Gardner's for hamburgers. It was about 5:30 when I got home. I started to take a nap, but Ray and LaVon came. Charlie came about 8 and we played rummy and chinese checkers - he beat me almost all the games. Gosh, but I hate to see him go home - it was only around 11:30 when he left. I was in bed by midnight.
October 14, 1946 (Mon)
Rainy today. Midge is 4 today - Mother and I gave her her doll before I went to work - she really liked it. I had to go up to library and help open mail today - the librarian had her tonsils out. We had quite a bit of work to do today. It seemed funny without Evie here - she's on vacation this week. Helen, Anna May and I ate lunch in snack bar. Anna May and I went downtown. Kept busy this afternoon too. I came straight home from work. Mother and Dad went downtown this evening so after I finished supper I did the dishes up. I listened to the radio and finished embroidering another scarf. Midge came over this evening to show me what she got for her birthday - she certainly was excited. I put my hair up and pressed my suit and went to bed about 10.
October 15, 1946 (Tues)
A little warmer today. I went up to library with Kay Kuntz this morning too. Dorothy wasn't here this morning so I kept pretty busy. We got paid today - I drew $48.54 ($55.00). Helen, Anna May and I ate lunch in snack bar and then went to bank, cashed my check and banked $10.00 - makes $40.10 now. I saw Pudge in Wolf and D's and paid $4.00 on my charge account. We didn't have too much to do this afternoon. Betty Jane called me this afternoon - just to talk - she still doesn't feel very good. St. Louis Cardinals won World Series today - beat Boston Red Sox 4 - 3. After work Anna May and I went to Boston Furniture Store and pid $18 on living room suite - we owe $147.00 on it yet. I got home about 5:30. This evening I embroidered on a tablecloth, put my hair up, and took a shower. Its almost ten now so good-night dear diary.
October 16, 1946 (Wed)
A fairly nice day outside. I worked by myself in the library till ten. Margie Dornte and I called Evie at ten rest period. I ate lunch with Anna May and Helen in the snack bar. Anna May and I went downtown and met Mother and Midge. I wasn't busy at all this afternoon. After work I went to Wolf and D's and bought a pattern to make a black crepe dress later on. I got home about 6 and it was dark out already. Charlie came about 7:30. Charlie sold around $600 worth of hogs yesterday - he was certainly feeling happy about it. Mother, Charlie and I played a game of buck euchre and then Charlie and I beat Mom and Dad 3 ouf 5 games of euchre. Charlie kept asking me what size ring I wear - I wonder ---. It was 11:15 when Charlie left - yes, I said 11:15.
October 17, 1946 (Thurs)
A very rainy day outside - rained, rained all day. I worked in the library again till ten. I didn't have much to do the rest of the morning. Anna May, Helen and I ate lunch in snack bar. Anna May and I went to Wolf and D's and I ordered enough crepe for 2 dresses - 4 yards of black, 1 yd. of light blue or aqua and 1/2 yd. of rose. I hope it doesn't take too long before I get it. I came straight home from work and since it was still raining, Mother came down to Tuttles and picked me up. This evening I embroidered some more on a tablecloth. Do you know it was 2 months ago today that I accepted Charlie's proposal. Gosh, but that time certainly has gone fast. Well, it getting late so I must hit the hay. good-night!
October 18, 1946 (Fri)
It was raining this morning so Mother took me down to the busline. I worked in the library till ten. I think this is my last day. At 11:30 I went up to the cafeteria with the five other girls who were going to serve for the Board of Director's luncheon. After we ate, we served the luncheon. I enjoyed it more this time than I did the first time. It was about 1:30 when I got back downstairs. Dorothy handed me a check - here the dear LL had given everybody bonus checks. Mine was for $55 - $45.28 after tax was taken out - I was flabbergasted - everybody certainly was in a good mood. I came straight home from work. I washed my hair this evening, and read magazines. It was just about ten when I got to bed.
October 19, 1946 (Sat)
This was one of the best days of my life. I got up about 8 - Mother and I took our showers and got ready to go downtown. I started spending my bonus check - first, I got my winter coat - a beautiful light green Kenward - I certainly liked it. I also got a slip, brazziere, and a garter belt. I still have money left to buy me a new pair of shoes and a new hat. We ate lunch at YMCA and got home about 1:30. Mother and I cleaned the house up this afternoon. I got cleaned up then and Charlie came about 8. We went to the Palace and saw Joan Davis in "She Wrote the Book" - good comedy. Mother and Dad just came home when we did, but they went after hamburgers, and then Charlie gave me a beautiful diamond - it is very beautiful - he and I were both nervous when he put it on my finger - oh golly, I'm so happy - Charlie left about 11:30.
October 20, 1946 (Sun)
I got up about 8 - I showed Mother and Dad my diamond - they both liked it very much. I went over and showed it to Margaret, Jess, Betty and Steve. I'm afraid I'm pretty excited over it. I didn't do much of anything - had my housecoat on till this afternoon. This afternoon I got cleaned up and embroidered on my luncheon cloth - finished it. I started knitting and I'm coming along pretty good. Charlie, Dot, and Bob came about 8. We sat and talked to Mother and Dad. Bob and Dot went to the show and Mom and Dad to bed. Charlie was sleepy so he slept with his head on my lap and I knitted. He looked so cute laying there asleep. It was after 12 when Bob and Charlie left. Dottie stayed all night.
October 21, 1946 (Mon)
It was rather a nice day. Dottie and I laid in bed this morning looking at my ring. I certainly got a lot of attention. Everybody was coming in to see it. Evie was back at work. We ate lunch with Helen and afterwards went downtown. Miss McCrory saw my ring this afternoon - she certainly sounded excited. Stan Koehlinger said I broke his heart. I don't believe I have ever been so happy - now, I only wish I had my other ring on my finger - 6 mos. and 5 days yet. Evie and I went downtown and looked for her coat after work. I got home about a quarter of 6. Mom and Dad were done. After we did dishes I sewed buttons on a blouse and did a little more knitting. Its a quarter after 9 and I want to go to bed early so good-night.
October 22, 1946 (Tues)
Rather warm today. Miss O'Rourke finally noticed my ring this morning. She and Miss McCrory were asking me lots of questions about Charlie and the farm. We were pretty busy today - Dorothy is working on the Community Chest campaign now. Evie, Helen and I ate lunch in snack bar and then Evie bought a new pair of shoes. I went downtown twice this afternoon for Miss O'Rourke and Miss McCrory. I came straight home from work. This evening Betty Jane called me - she wants to have a wiener bake - Nov. 18th. I told her about my ring. Donna Lou called - she is going to met us for lunch tomorrow. Pudge called - she's going steady now. I ironed a few blouses this evening and polished my nails. Its 9:30 so better start getting ready for bed.

At noon Evie and I went downtown and met Donna Lou at the YMCA for lunch. Betty Lou had already told Donna about my diamond. Worked pretty hard again this afternoon. After work Evie and I went downtown, and I bought a new pair of shoes - Black high heeled pumps - pretty $15, 95. It was almost 6 when I got home. I got cleaned up then, but Charlie didn't come - I felt like crying, because he didn't come - I went to bed about 9:30. Betty Jane said she saw Lucile and Bill last night - gosh, but I'm glad to hear he's home now. Lucy is happy at last.
October 24, 1946 (Thurs)
Pretty nice again today except that it started raining this evening. We were very busy this morning - I did more running around. Betty Jane called me once this morning and once this afternoon. Evie and I ate lunch in snack bar and went downtown to look at slips for her. Not quite so busy this afternoon. It was about 5 when I got home from work and almost dark out already -depressing. Mother went to a shower this evening. I have $12.62 in my bubble bank now. This evening I washed a couple pair of nylons out and got ready to go to bed about 9. I called Betty Jane. I read magazines and paper in bed till I went to sleep.
October 25, 1946 (Fri)
Still a little rainy today. We weren't very busy again today. Miss McCrory tickles me - she runs me all over the building - getting me in condition for the farm she says. Evie and I ate lunch in snack bar and went downtown. Several teachers were taking a tour of the building - among them Mr. Reeves and Mr. Mertes. They stopped and talked to Evie and I for awhile. I came straight home from work. Mother and Dad went to the lake for the weekend. After I ate, I washed dishes and washed my hair. I took care of the kids for a little while. I came back home, pressed my dresses, mended them, started packing my suitcase, polished my nails and took a shower. I went to bed about 10.
October 26, 1946 (Sat)
Margaret called me at 6:30 to get up. I finished packing my suitcase, straightened my bedroom up and got cleaned up. I went with Margaret and Jess to N. Manchester - we got there a little after 9. Jess papered Dot's living room today. This afternoon Dot, Margaret and the kids and I went to N. Manchester. We had phosphates in a drugstore. We got back about 5:30. We had sort of a birthday supper for the three kids. Charlie came over about 7:30. We both got so sleepy that we finally decided to go for a ride - we went past our house - someday, it will really be ours. Just six more months from today - seems like such a long time, but over 2 months have gone by already.
October 27, 1946 (Sun)
We got up about 6:30. Charlie came past and he, Mr. Christman, and Harriet and I went to church - 8 o'clock. We went over to Christman's for dinner. Mr. Christman had a heart attack yesterday and Mrs. Christman didn't feel good so Harriet and I got dinner. Two of Charlie's aunts and an uncle were here for dinner today. Charlie and I took Harriet to N. Manchester to hear her give her speech - very good. We went back to Christmans and over to Dot's and Bob's. I drove over there and back. We had a waffle supper. Ray is in the states - probably be home in a week. Charlie and I got to Ft. Wayne about 8 - went to Emboyd to see "Of Human Bondage" pretty good. We got home about 12:15 and he left about 12:30. Mother and Dad were already home when we got here.
October 28, 1946 (Mon)
Pretty nice weather over the weekend and today. I was so tired and then we really had to work on that Community Chest campaign. Betty Jane called me this morning.
