October 1, 1948 (Fri)
It was rainy when we got up but cleared up so I decided to wash about 10. This afternon I ironed and cleaned eggs. After Charlie did chores, we ate supper and I did dishes. I laid down on the davenprot and went to sleep. I woke up in time to give Mikey his 10:00 bottle and then to bed.
I was talking to Aunt Harriet and asked her if she remembered anything about it as she was one of the "flower girls". She said that just meant that they were in charge of carrying the flowers from the funeral home (or place of the funeral) to the cemetary! -- Sandy Buckley
October 2, 1948 (Sat)
Mikey slept all day yesterday and so didn't want to sleep last night and kept us awake. This morning I cleaned the bedrooms and living room. We got a card from Mother. This afternoon I clened diing room and mopped kitchen. I wrote letters to Betty Jane and Mother. This evening we were going to go to the folks to take baths, but instead I stayed with Dot and Bobby while Charlie and Bob got the folks "floor furnace" - removed and took over home. Then we just came back home and went to bed.
October 3, 1948 (Sun)
We didn't get up in time to go to 8:00 church so went to 10:15 instead - high mass. Mikey started crying and I had to take him out. Then he went to sleep. We stopped at Bracken on the way home. We ate dinner, I did dishes, then Charlie and I worked a jig-saw puzzle. This evening Charlie had to take Bob over to Bippies to get some medicine - they haven't been feeling very good. A Kenneth Crosbie from Bluffton, Indiana, won $30,000 in prizes on "Stop the Music" - lucky guy. Mikey got his first haircut today - it was so long in back. The folks were here for a few minutes. Charlie and I went to bed about 10, but Mike wouldn't go to sleep till about 11.
October 4, 1948 (Mon)
I got up about 6:30. I picked a half a bushel of tomatoes and started making tomato catsup. I've never tried making it before and I cooked it till 6:00 and it still wasn't thick but canned it anyway. Charlie disced his wheat ground and sowed his wheat. He was sick this evening. Probably had the same thing Dot, Bob and Bobby had. We went to bed about 10:30 and about 11:30 Bob came back with the car. Charlie didn't feel like taking him home so Bob took car with him.
October 5, 1948 (Tues)
Today is Kay's birthday. She is 9 - also Bud's. The weather was very nice yesterday, but now that I want to wash, it is rainy. But I washed anyway and dried most of the clothes in the house. Dot and Bobby brought the car home this morning. Bobby walks quite a bit now. This afternoon I did my ironing and lengthen my gray suit. Bob told us last night about their Aunt Martha Baker dying. (She was Grandma's daughter-in-law.) Her funeral will be Thursday. Charlie felt better today. We went to bed about 10.
October 6, 1948 (Wed)
This morning I did the usual things and then cleaned the house a little. This afternoon I picked a bushel of tomatoes and made tomato juice - 16 quarts. This evening Charlie, Mikey, Dot, Bob, Bobby and I went to N. Manchester. This is Fire Prevention Week and the firemen had a water battle. We also went to the grocery. It was about 10 when we got home.
October 7, 1948 (Thurs)
This morning, after I got my dishes done and gave baby his bath, Charlie, Mikey, and I went to South Whitley. I paid the light and telephone and bought Mike a white long-sleeved knit shirt. We didn't get home till a quarter after 12 and had to hurry to get ready to go to Wabash. We had to pick Dot and Bob up and leave Bobby off at Colchessers. We got to Wabash a little after one. The funeral wasn't the same church Grandma's was. We went out to see Grandpa awhile after the funeral and got home about 6. I didn't do much this evening and we went to bed about 10.
October 8, 1948 (Fri)
Rainy today so I didn't wash. This morning did the usual things. Then this afternoon I wrote a letter to Lucile and tore wallpaper off the room upstairs till Mikey got fussy and I had to take care of him. This evening we and Dot and Bobby went to N. Manchester and Charlie and Mikey had their pictures taken. I hope they're good. We stopped past the folks on the way home. Aunt Sula and Uncle Horace were there. We got home about 10. We got a postcard from Mother today.
October 9, 1948 (Sat)
Mikey is 4 months old today - still weighs 12 lbs. 4 oz and is 24 inches long. This morning I cleaned house. This afternoon I cleaned eggs, washed diapers, hose etc. out by hand. Then rinsed some diapers out. I also did a little mending and washed my hair. Charlie took the combine over to his Dad's and Bob's tractor back to him. So I had to go after him. Charlie has a pole light now and has finished wiring his barn and milk house. This evening we went over to the folks and took baths. It was about 11 when we got home.
My dad did not have a bathroom in the house till he moved to California in 1953. My mother, of course, had all the "luxuries" when she was growing up in Fort Wayne and then she married my father. He moved her out to the farm where they did not have a bathroom. He put in electricity and running water after he bought the farm house. We thought she was nuts! She used to say she was in love and it did not matter! -- Sandy Buckley
October 10, 1948 (Sun)
We didn't get up till 7 and Charlie wasn't through milking when his milkman came. We got ready and left here about a quarter of 9 and got to mother's about 9:30. They are painting their house gray trimmed in white and it sure looks nice. They kinda want to sell their house and buy a farm. They are coming down to look at the one north of ours which is for sale. Mother took care of Mikey while Charlie and I went to 10:00 Mass at St. Judes - low mass. Then back after Mikey - we stayed at Mom's for about an hour and then went out to Betty and Erv's. She had a delicious roast for dinner and cherry pie too. About 4 Erv and Charlie came down and did Charlie's chores and got back about 7. We got home about 11:30.
October 11, 1948 (Mon)
Rainy this morning so I didn't wash. Didn't work too hard this morning. Dot called and said they had tried to call us yesterday about 8 but our phone was out of order. They were going to go out to Mom's with us. We got a birth announcement from Pauline today. Their baby was born Sept. 26 and weighed 6 lbs 13 oz. They named her Virginia Louise. This afternoon I painted Mikey's room - looks very nice. This evening Charlie and I put the border up. Charlie wired the chicken house today. In bed about 10.
October 16, 1948 (Sat)
It rained all day. This morning Mother, Dad and Marjorie came down about 10:00. They, Charlie, Mikey and I went and looked at a couple of farms. They are thinking about buying one near here. We stopped and got Dorothy and Bobby and came back here for dinner. Charlie and Dad took Bobby and Mikey over to Charlie's folks. They took care of the boys this afternoon and evening. Dot and I went to Ft. Wayne with Mother and Dad. We got cleaned up there and went to Bob Williams wedding to Jeanette Stout. Such a terrible day for a wedding. Margaret and Marjorie went too. Afterwards we went to Wolf and D's and bought a beautiful electric clock for a wedding gift. I also bought a pair of wine overalls and a striped long-sleeved knit shirt for Mike - very cute. Then back to Mothers. This evening Charlie and Bob came in and we all went to the reception. Afterwards we went to Howard and Ahleen's and played euchre and ate popcorn till 1:30. Then we came home, got Bobby and Mikey and got home and in bed about 2:30.
October 17, 1948 (Sun)
I didn't get up till 8. Charlie had his chores all done by then. We ate breakfast and did dishes. We just sat and read the paper till Charlie's folks stopped by about 12:30 on their way up to the lake. So we ate dinner and went up too taking a heating stove with us. Their cottage is certainly cute. Its all plastered now. It was very chilly so didn't stay long. We got home about 4:30. Charlie did chores and we ate supper and I beat Charlie a game of 500 rum. I was so sleepy and I laid down on the davenport and Charlie in a chair and we both went to sleep and I didn't wake up till 11. I gave Mikey his bottle and we went to bed then.
October 18, 1948 (Mon)
Just another Monday morning - too bad we have to have them. This afternoon Charlie, Mikey and I went to N. Manchester to get their proofs. Only one of Mikey turned out so we are having just one tinted 5" x 7" made of him. Charlie's were just fair - having 3 - 5 x 7 (one tinted) made. Charlie sold the rest of his hogs this noon. We were going to get our pullets this evening but the people were going away so will get them tomorrow evening. We went to bed about 9:30 this evening. We got a thank-you card from Evey Lou.
October 19, 1948 (Tues)
We had a very heavy frost last night. I washed this morning. It was very windy and chilly. This afternoon I ironed and embridered on a pillowcase for Mike. We got a letter from Pauline. Two years ago today Charlie gave me my diamond - time certainly does fly. This evening Charlie got the pullets - 102 of them. We went to bed about 10. Charlie went to dentist today.
October 20, 1948 (Wed)
Another heavy frost. It warmed up considerably today though. Mikey weighed 12 lbs 10 oz. this morning. He also sat up by himself a little. He's so sweet and happy. Had some eggs today to clean - first time for quite awhile - we got 35 eggs today. We got a letter from Betty Jane. I baked apple dumplings for dinner. This afternoon Dot, Bobby, Mikey and I went to N. Manchester. I had some cow feed ground for Charlie and bought dextri maltose for Mike and groceries. I got home about 4:30. Charlie dug the potatoes in the garden - we got quite a few this year. Mikey certainly likes his pablum and strained vegetables. This evening I embroidered a little and looked through some Saturday Evening Post's. It was around 9:30 when we went to bed.
October 21, 1948 (Thurs)
This morning I did the usual things and started mending overalls for Charlie. I baked a plum cake for dinner. This afternoon I took Mikey over to Dorothy's and went to the dentist. I had two cavaties filled in the same tooth - $4.00. When I went back after Mike, Dorothy wanted to go to Bracken so we went down there. And then home. We got 37 eggs today. Charlie and Ray picked corn at Ray's this afternoon. This evening didn't do much - in bed about 9:30.
October 22, 1948 (Fri)
Rainy this morning so didn't wash. Instead cleaned the bedrooms and living room. At noon I called a number in Ft. Wayne that had a baby bed advertised - it sounded alright so told him I'd take it. This afternoon I cleaned dining room and kitchen, cleaned eggs, finished mending Charlie's overalls and hemmed a couple dish towels. Charlie picked corn this morning and helped Bob on corn crib this afternoon. Charlie did chores early and we ate and went to Fort Wayne. The baby bed is pretty nice - a full panel light maple with white doggies on the end - very nice mattress - $20. We went out to Mother's for awhile - Margaret and Jess came over. We got home about 10 and then to bed. We got a postcard from Donna Lou - she is in Florida. 43 eggs today.
October 23, 1948 (Sat)
Goodness, but it was foggy this morning, but I washed anyway. We left Mikey's diaper bag up to Mom's last night and now he is out of diapers. It turned out fairly nice though. Charlie helped Bob on his corn crib again today. This afternoon I ironed, cleaned eggs and hemmed five more dish towels. Charlie was pretty tired when he got home so we didn't go anywhere this evening. In bed about 10. Pullets laid 36 eggs today.
October 24, 1948 (Sun)
Charlie's mother called about 6:00 and wanted to know if we wanted to go to South Bend. We did and they came after us about a quarter till 8. We got to Harriet and Bud's about a quarter till 10 and they were still in bed. After dinner we went out to see the new '49 Nash - it certainly is a honey. The folks would like to trade their '48 in now, I do believe. It was around 5:30 when we got home. The pullets had laid 51 eggs today - pretty good. This evening we just listened to the radio and read the morning paper - to bed about 10.
October 25, 1948 (Mon)
Just think only two more months till Christmas. Mikey slept all night without a bottle - first time in quite awhile. Charlie helped Bob again today so just Mikey and I were here all day. This afternoon I tore wallpaper off the room upstairs but still didn't get it all off. Charlie came home about 5 and wanted to know if I wanted to go to the Farm Bureau meeting and potluck. I had forgotten all about it so I hurried and put scalloped potatoes in the oven and mixed up a cake when the bottle gas ran out. It was getting late so we just went over to Charlie's folks and got cleaned up over there and went with them. Mikey just smiled and jabbered at everyone. But when the meeting began, he got fussy and I had to go into another room with him. However a couple girls came in (high school girls) and talked to us. Tonight was election and Charlie's Dad was elected president again. It was around 11 when we got home and in bed. 51 eggs again.
October 26, 1948 (Tues)
I was going to wash this morning, but Mr. Moser didn't bring the stove gas till 12:30. Instead I cleaned house a little, washed some clothes out by hand etc. Charlie was over to Bob's again today. This afternoon Dot and I went to South Whitley and I paid our fall taxes and then I had Mikey's picture taken at a jewelry store there and then we went to the Hotel and had both Mikey and Bobby's picture taken. Mikey smiled all over - I hope they're as good as I think they will be. This evening I embroidered a little and we went to bed about 9:30. Beautiful day - warm too. 55 eggs.
October 27, 1948 (Wed)
Another nice day. Must be Indian Summer. This morning Charlie sprayed that room upstairs with water and I tore some more of the wallpaper off. Then after I gave Mikey his daily bath and 10:00 bottle, Charlie and I tore the rest of it off. This afternoon all 3 of us and Dot, Bob and Bobby went to N. Manchester. I just bought groceries and Charlie laying mash. (I called Dad and he says it is just chicken feed!) This evening after I finished the dishes and put my hair up, Charlie plastered holes in the bedroom upstairs while I swept up some of the paper and dirt. In bed about 10. 54 eggs.
October 28, 1948 (Thurs)
Still warm so I washed. Also cleaned eggs etc. Its fun to clean them when I grade them. We are getting more mediums now than pullet eggs and some large too. Mikey weighed 12 lbs 12 oz. when I gave him his bath. We received a letter from Lucy, a postcard from Mother and Dad saying they would be down tomorrow afternoon and lots of advertisements. This afternoon I ironed and put clothes away. Charlie was down at Ray's helping pour part of the barn floor all day. This evening I caught up on writing in here while Charlie entertained Mike by letting him tear newspaper. Soon after we when to bed. 55 eggs.
October 29, 1948 (Fri)
Another nice day. Today is Jimmy's birthday - he's 3. This morning I cleaned the house a little bit and then painted the ceiling yellow upstairs. This afternoon after I did dishes I cleaned eggs and then started painting the walls light green. Mother and Dad came about 3:30. We talked till suppertime and then we went over to Dorothy's and Bob's for awhile. It was about 10:30 when we got to bed. Mikey didn't want to go to sleep - it was 11:30 before he finally went to sleep. We got a letter from Anna May today. Also 62 eggs.
October 30, 1948 (Sat)
My mistake - today is Jimmy's birthday. Still warm. Mother, Dad, Charlie, Mikey and I looked at a couple of farms this morning. Then we went over to Dot's for dinner. We came back here about 3:30 and Mother and Dad left about 4 for home. I baked a chocolate cake and boiled potatoes and eggs for potato salad. Then I cleaned eggs - 58 today. This evening we went over to Charlie's folks and took baths. Harriet and Bud were there too. It was midnight before we got home.
October 31, 1948 (Sun)
We didn't get up until 7:00. While Charlie did his chores, I finished making the potato salad and baked apples. We left about 10 and got up to the cottage at Webster Lake about a quarter of 11. And I forgot my cake. No one was there when we got there so we rode around N. Webster awhile. The folks came soon after we got back. They have the cottage painted now and it looks very nice. Metzger's and Uncle Luther's were there too - of course so were Dot and Bob, Bobby and Harriet and Bud and also Wygant's. Certainly was a lot to eat. This afternoon the men played euchre while we played dominos. Aunt Gladys, Uncle Ervin, Phil, Cleo, Don and Ronnie were there this afternoon too. We got home about 6:30. The pullets laid 74 eggs today - pretty good. Rained today.
