September 20, 1948 (Mon)

I got up about 6:30 this morning. Didn't do too much this morning. This afternoon Charlie, Mikey and I went to North Manchester and bought paint for the stairway, one bedroom upstairs and Mikey's room. In the evening we went over to Dorothy's and Bob's for a little while. It rained most of the day.

Just think it has been almost a year and a half since I have written in my Diary. Since I do not have a regular diary, this notebook will serve the same purpose. I'm going to try and make a list of the important happenings in this past year and a half and then continue from today with a daily record. My last entry was on April 24, 1947. Of course I''ll begin with -

April 26, 1947 - Charles and I were married at 9:00 am at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception with Fr. Stanley Manoski officiating. It was a beautiful and wonderful day. Everything was perfect. Mass lasted approximately 45 minutes, then we had our pictures taken and had our wedding breakfast at Candlelite Cafe and reception from 4 to 8. So many people were there - just everyone we knew. Dick Christman took colored movies of it all. Charlie and I left about 8:30, went over to Alma's and Roy's and changed our clothes and went to Hotel Indiana where we spent the night. The week following, of course, was our honeymoon. We spent the first couple of days at Mammoth Cave, Ky. Lovely hotel and we had a wonderful time. From there we went to Chattanooga, Tenn. and up through the Smoky Mts to Cincinnati and home.

May 1, 1947 Betty Jane and Erv had a baby girl at St. Joe's hospital which they named Suzanne Elizabeth.

June 26, 1947 - Harriet and Gerald (Bud) Fouts were married this afternoon at 3 in the rectory of St Mary's in Huntington. Charlie and I stood up for them - all wore street clothes. Private wedding with a large reception in the evening.

(Just called Aunt Harriet and she said that Uncle Gerald was not a Catholic and his mother said she would disown him if he became a Catholic - - that is why no big church wedding)

September 4, 1947 Dorothy and Bob had a baby boy at about 9:30 am. He weighed 9 lbs 14 oz. and they named him Robert Oliver. We were up to the Hospital (Huntington) to see him and Dorothy.

October, 1947 We traded our '42 Chevrolet for a '41 Nash 5 - passenger coupe. The car was nice-looking, but we spent nearly $700 on it before the end of the year - rather an expensive trade.

Nov. 22, 1947 - Harriet, Bud, Charlie and I went to a Notre Dame - Tulane football game. Notre Dame won - in fact, they ended the season undefeated. We spent the weekend in Harriet and Bud's darling house trailer.

December 9, 1947 - Margaret and Jess had a 7 lb. 2 oz. baby girl at Methodist Hospital. They named her Betty Ann. That brings their family to two boys and two girls now. Marjorie spent two weeks with Charlie and I then till Christmas eve.

Dec. 24, 1947 - Dot, Bob, Bobby, Charlie, Marjorie and I went up to Mother and Dad's for Christmas Eve. Steve Holmes dressed as Santa Claus which of course the kids enjoyed. We opened our presents and as usual Mom and Dad had a lot of company. Dot, Bob, Charlie and I went to Midnight mass at St. Jude's.

December 25, 1947 - We got home about 4:30 and Charlie and I opened our presents for each other - then slept till 10. We went to Grandma and Grandpa Baker's for dinner. Lot of relation there. In the evening we were over to Charlie's folks and opened our presents there.

Dec. 31, 1947 - Charlie and I went to the movies in the evening at South Whitley. We came home about 10 and went to bed, but set the alarm for midnight when we woke up and welcomed the New Year in.

January 26, 1948 - Ray and Fern had a 8 lb. 12 oz. baby boy at St. Joe. They named him Steven Allan.

February 19, 1948 - Lucile and Bill Hall had a baby girl at Lutheran Hospital and they named her Susan Kay.

April 26, 1948 - Charlie and I were married one year today - Charlie bought or rather had kitchen cabinets made for our 1st anniversary. We had to go to a Farm Bureau meeting this evening 'cause Charlie and I were chairmen for the program committee for the evening.

June 9, 1948 - Michael Charles Christman arrived today - weighing just 7 lbs. Charlie got his little boy he wanted so badly. Mickey is so tiny and cute and sweet.

June , 1948 - Mickey was baptized today at St. Mary's in Huntington. Dorothy and Bob are his godparents.

September 5, 1948 - Harriet and Bud stayed all night last night. We got up at 4:00. Charlie did chores and we took Mikey over to Charlie's folks. Then we four went to the State Fair. What a day! We just walked all day - in the evening we went to see the "follies of 1948" in the grandstand and it just rained cats and dogs. We were just soaked before we got to the car. It was very late by the time we got Mikey and home again. Harriet and Bud stayed all night again

September 21, 1948 (Tues)

First day of fall. I was going to wash this morning, but it was raining so I called Dot and we and Bobby and Mikey went to Fort Wayne. We stayed at Mom's for lunch - then she took care of the boys while Dot and I went shopping. I bought curtains for Mike's room and blue corduroy overalls and long-sleeved knit shirt for Mike. We went back out to Mom's for awhile and it was around 8:30 when I got home. We went to bed about 10:00.

September 22, 1948 (Wed)

It was chilly and rainy again this morning so I still didn't wash. I lengthened my green winter Kenwood coat and fixed a dress besides, of course, my usual household duties. In the afternoon, Dot, I and the babies went to N. Manchester to buy groceries, laying mesh, etc. I got home about 6. By the time Charlie got his chores done and we ate supper and I got my dishes done, it was time for bed.

September 23, 1948 (Thurs)

We got up about a quarter of 6. It wasn't raining so I finally washed. Bob was here for dinner. Charlie filled silo here this afternoon. About 2 I took Mikey over to Dot's and I went to the dentist in South Whitley. He filled 2 teeth - $5.00. Mike and I got home about 5:30. Charlie wasn't home when we got here. In fact, he didn't get home until about 7:00. He had been over to Liberty Mills Sale Barn - sold our Holstein cow, Daizie, and 7 hogs. In bed about 10.

September 24, 1948 (Fri)

Still chilly enough to have a fire. This morning I ironed. I received a letter from Pauline and she is still waiting on her baby. It was suppose to arrive Sept. 9 - kinda late. In the afternoon I cleaned eggs, put clothes away, shortened sleeves in Mike's t-shirt, sewed buttons on a dress of mine and did other odds and ends. Charlie cleaned his tractor up, did chores early and left here at a quarter till five. I packed a lunch for him to eat on the way to Sidney. He, Bob and Ray were in a tractor pulling contest there. I got cleaned up and changed Mikey's clothes and picked Dorothy and Bobby up. We took the boys over to Colclesser's who took care of them while Dot and I went to the contest. None of the boys placed in the contest. Dot and I left about 11:30 and it still wasn't over with. We stopped and got the children. Colclessers' just couldn't get over what a happy baby Mike was and how much he looked like Charlie. Frankly, I think he is pretty sweet myself and such cute dimples! It was about 1 before I got Mike in bed and asleep and myself in bed. Charlie came home about 1:30.

September 25, 1948 (Sat)

Goodness, but we were sleepyheads. Charlie got up about 7, but I didn't get up till a quarter of 8. This morning I cleaned the bedrooms and living room and washed out hose and anklets for Mike. I caught up on my bookkeeping too. This afternoon I cleaned the dining room and kitchen, cleaned eggs. In the evening we went over to Charlie's folks to take baths. Dad was just leaving when we got there. Grandma Baker is in the hospital and the folks have been staying in Wabash. We got home in bed about 10:30.

September 26, 1948 (Sun)

Got up about 6:30 - got an extra hour sleep 'cause we set the clocks back an hour - back on standard time now. We went to 8:00 church. Dad and Bob took care of Mikey. It was low mass. We got Mikey on the way home. We had dinner and did dishes. Then this afternoon Betty Jane, Erv and Sue came. We just sat and talked all afternoon. They couldn't get over how Mikey had grown. They stayed for supper and left about 8. Grandma Baker died last night about 11:00 -heart attack. Grandpa isn't too well now either.

September 27, 1948 (Mon)

I got up early this morning and did my washing. Also cleaned yesterday's eggs. I folded the diapers and put them away - then I dampened the clothes to be ironed. I also washed hose, Mikey's knit shirt, and my aqua dress out by hand. This afternoon I did the ironing and cleaned today's eggs. Charlie did chores pretty early so we could eat supper early. We got cleaned up, picked Dot, Bob and Bobby up and went to Wabash. They had Grandma at the house 'cause Grandpa has to stay in bed. It was about 10 when we got home.

September 28, 1948 (Tues)

We got up at 6:30. We got cleaned up and picked Dot, Bob, and Bobby up and went to Wabash. They had services at the house at 11 and then everyone went over to Donna June's for dinner. In the afternoon, the ladies staying with Grandpa took care of Bobby, Mikey and Stevie while we went to the funeral at the Church. (We got a wedding invitation to Bob William's wedding Oct. 16) Charlie, Bob, Ray, Donald Sailors, Myron Baker and Heiman were the pall-bearers. Dorothy, Fern, Harriet, Cleo Guthrie, Edna Taylor, Sharon Baker, Wilma Baker and I were flowergirls. We then went to the cemetary. It was all very sad. We went back to the house to see Grandpa and get Mikey. We stopped in N. Manchester at the grocery and something went wrong with the starter and we had to be pushed. We left Dot and Bob off and came home. Charlie did chores and we ate supper. I slept then till time for Mike's 10:00 bottle - then we went to bed.

September 29, 1948 (Wed)

Mikey woke up at 3:00 for a bottle. I kissed Charlie and wished him Happy Birthday. Then we went back to sleep and got up about 6:15. Charlie is 27 today. This morning I just gave Mike his bath, cleaned eggs etc. This afternoon Charlie, Mikey, Dot, Bobby and I went to N. Manchester. I bought Mikey a yellow t-shirt, 2 birthday cards for Charlie, and got a roll of pictures at Halls. One of Mikey is particularly cute. Charlie and I went to Wibles and bought him a pair of brown dress shoes for his birthday present. We got home from town about 5:30. The mailman didn't come until after we had left for town. We got an egg check ($11.70 - 65@) and a letter from Mother. I baked a Maple Nut cake for Charlie's birthday supper and we had beef, noodles, mashed potatoes and salad too. I only had 25 candles, but put them on the cake anyway. It looked pretty. When we turned the lights out and lit the candles, Mike just looked and looked and laughed. Charlie had to blow 3 times before the candles all went out. We went to bed about ten. Mike weighed 12 lbs 4 oz. this morning.

September 30, 1948 (Thurs)

Today is Bob's birthday. He is 28. I got up about 6:30. Right after breakfast, Charlie left to go after his disc and I washed last night's supper dishes, cleaned eggs, gave babe his bath, cleaned eggs and started dinner - hot ribs, potato salad, peas, ice tea and cake. I got a postcard from Dorothy Murphy - she is on a vacation. She said Miss O'Rourke is retiring tomorrow. Also received a letter from Betty Jane - they want us to come up for dinner Oct. 9th. Also a letter from Wolf and D's about having the baby's picture taken. Charlie got a birthday card from Mom and Dad. Dorothy called up this afternoon and wanted Charlie, Mikey and I to come over for supper. Charlie did his chores pretty early and we went over there. After supper we ate popcorn and played euchre. Dot and Bob beat Charlie and I two games and we them 1. It was about 10 when we got home.
