A little tale of the Citroën A-series.

Well, i will tell you a little about this little workhorse. It has its roots in the Citroën 2CV - that dates back as a prototype to 1939 - the 2CV we now know is dating back to 1948. But a lot of changes have been since then, not a single bit from the 1948 2CV can be used on the last one made in 1990, even though they look quite similar in design. Anyways, the original 2CV had some offspring, the Ami, the Dyane, and finally in '69 the Mehari range. All based on the same floorpan..only with different engines and bodywork.

Here is a lineup of Meharis, the white one with canvas roof on the left
is mine ('71).Then there is one with the optional hard-top, and one of
the extremely rare US-versions, among other features it has much bigger
headlights. The bodywork of them all, is made from a plastic known as ABS,
which is rivetted to a tubular framework, which is bolted to the 2CV/Dyane
floorpan. It is not a kit car, but a vehicle built by Citroën, for hard
work and leisure. There was even an option of a 4x4 and the army version
had 24 volt electrics. Engines ranged from 26hp to 29hp(!), but some of us
have uprates, (the high compression Dyane unit pushes out 32hp, still from
a mere 602 cc). But as the vehicle only weighes around 1200 lbs, this is
enough to push it to 60+ mph (depending on the wind, tailwind adds speed,
headwind reduces!). It has a lower transmission ratio than the regular 2CV,
so it does the hills better when fully loaded (add another 900 lbs on the
back, and towing a further 900 lbs on a trailer, and you really need the
low ratios.) The doors are detachable, and most of us have the folding
windscreen option. Did i mention that the roofs are canvas or detachable
plastic??
Here is a little "A"-series family album.First the 2CV, here in a late
version colour scheme, known as Dolly.
The 2CV had a new cousin in 1961, the Ami6. A sort of luxury 2CV,with
stiffer springs and a little more power, the '59 2CV only produced 12hp,
so it was rather underpowered, the bigger engine of the Ami6 had 22.
The Ami6 was later superseeded by the Ami8, that had the 602cc with 32hp,
that was fitted to the Dyane6, much later..
But the Ami could also be delivered with the flat four engine (1015cc/55hp)
from the Citroën GS, the car was then named Ami Super, a very rare car
nowadays, since it was only in production for a few years.
The Ami Super floorpan is now very sought after, due to the fact that
the 2CV body can be fitted to it, with some modifications. And with the
biggest GSA engine, 1299 cc 65hp, you can really go flying, this engine can
be tuned to more than 100hp, if you have a sincere deathwish. Imagine going
down the highway, passing what seems to be a 29hp 2CV, then experience the
shock of it passing you later, doing 120mph!! Here is a picture of an Ami
Super, slightly modified...the original engine (1015cc) has been modified,
so it now has around 70hp ..The Ami8 is very similar in design.
Finally a picture of me, the MehariDude aka Kim Jensen.
It is me in the yellow t-shirt. On this picture I am about to go to England,
other guy on picture is my buddy, Jacob, who went along for the ride.

This is a mid 50's 2CV
This seems like a hopeless project, but not all that bad, it will run one day!
Just a little gathering, 550 2CVs in one convoy.
