You may find understanding why the person SI's difficult and/or upseting but bear in mind some of the following points:
DO keep an open mind. DON'T judge the person or jump to conclusions.
DO make time to listen to them and take them seriously.
DO help them to find their own way of managing their problems.
DO try to help them work out who else can help them.
DO offer to go with them to tell someone, or offer to tell someone for them.
DO carry on with ordinary activites you do together with them.
DON'T be offended if they don't want to handle things your way.
DON'T tease them- remember, they're feelings need to be respected.
DO support any positive steps they take. And most importantly-
DO NOT think that they are attention seeking, they are probably already feeling bad enough-if they knew healthier ways to cope they probably would. Remember that your feelings matter too. Even though they probably feel a million times worse than you do keep in mind the following points:
Look after yourself.
Even those trained to work with people who SI need support, it's okay if you feel you need some too.
Try to carry on with other activities and relationships.
You don't have to be available for them 24/7- just try to be there for them when they need you most.
