Chapter 3 (Continued: Go Back to the Last Page >>)

Spotting the figure of Glen coming up, Irene raised her hand.
‘Hi Glen, how have you been doing? Let me introduce this guy from Singapore, who just entered the university this year…’
‘See, you’d better go with the same Asian’
Putting the cup on the table, Glen realised himself to blurt out such a wild thing.

‘Sorry?’ Irene asked absently unaware of his feeling now.
‘An Asian man is better to get on with and chatter easily with you. The same language, colours of skin, hair, eyes, and culture…’
‘Glen, I don’t understand what you’re getting at. I’m just…’
‘After that accident, you’ve become sick of seeing a Kiwi?’
Irene’s look visibly became changed. The Chinese man next to her had no idea about what was happening, caught little English and helplessly stood there, hesitating.

‘Glen, I had believed you’re the only one who understand us, no one else – how much our family suffered from such a hard knock without any reason or ground – and because I have you, I have made you on the basis of trust – that there are such Kiwis like you – and tried to get over during the break, and I was telling my dad so, and he lifted up his head at last…I, I have thought not to worry you, and to smile you a welcome back, that’s what I’ve ever been thinking…’

The tears falling from Irene finally brought Glen to his senses.
‘Irene’
‘Can’t it be helped in Kiwis’ eyes Chinese are clever but sly, just have a good head for business, and exploit this country…?’
‘No, I didn’t mean that…’
Without listening to Glen, she got up from her seat and ran to leave behind the shop.

‘Er, two of you, young folks’
Behind their backs, a steady voice of great depth was heard.
