Willow Rosenburg was bored, she had completed the new database for Giles. Finished all her homework and sat chin in the palm of her hand as she played with the computer mouse, sliding the pointer up and down the screen aimlessly. Buffy was out on patrol but she knew better. Her new best friend was trying to see if she could bump into that tall dark stranger called Angel again. Buffy defiantly had the hots for the mysterious man in the black leather jacket. He was cute Willow had to admit. She sighed softly, she wondered what it would be like to have a boyfriend. She wondered what it would be like to have Xander Harris as her boyfriend! She sighed again and looked across the table at Rupert Giles, the school librarian and Watcher to Buffy Summers. His nose, as always was buried deep within a book that was older than Giles himself. "How do you become a Watcher?"
"Hmm!" Giles did not look up at the question, in fact Willow was not sure that he had even heard the question. So she repeated it.
"How do you become a Watcher?"
Giles looked and pushed his glasses up his nose "Oh you know, years of study with the Council then you take final exams."
"Yes, but how did you become Buffy's Watcher?"
"She's the Slayer!" He replied looking bewildered by the question. "If you mean how Buffy was chosen..."
"No!" Willow frowned slightly as she interrupted. "There are lots of Watchers, right?"
"A fair number, yes," Giles frowned.
"Out of those, how come you were chosen?"
A smile crossed the Watchers lips as memories seemed to come back to him. "We have to under go a trial, face our darkest fears. Then the one who proves himself worthy is assigned the new Slayer."
"You did this?" Willow's eyes widened.
"Yes."
"Tell me about it!" She sat up eagerly.
"You really want to know?" Giles asked, smiling.
"Yes!"
"Well it all began back in London five years ago..."
