With most of my inspiration coming from Michael Putnam's amazing
book Silent Screens, and the facination of my friend Erin Dorbin,
I've spent a lot of time searching for and photographing these old, often abandonded or converted
theaters. Sadly, even as I was growing up, the concept of a single screen theater had become
somewhat of an antiquated idea. I choose to visit these closed down theaters in hopes of catching
a glimpse of life in a simpler time, less perverted by commercialism. They are rare artifacts
with an abundance of real quality that is absent in so much of our modern lives. They may not all be
the best photos, certainly no comparison to Mr. Putnams, but the adventure of finding
these theaters and the excitement that comes from discovering something really interesting
is something I truly enjoy and feel is worth sharing.
Move your mouse over one of the regions above and select
a theater from the list to view photos and read information and stories about
the individual theaters. Please feel free to contact me about anything
found on this website anytime, either by email or in the guestbook, both of
which can be found below. Also found below are links to Erin's wonderful
site documenting main st. and drive-in theaters and Michael Putnams theater
photography site, as well as the Abandoned Places section of my site. Enjoy!
RECENT UPDATES
The most
recent additions were from a theater finding trip through southcentral
Michigan with Erin and Will. We headed east down US 12 between White Pigeon
and Coldwater to find the Pigeon Theater, the Strand Theater, The Bronson
Theater, and the Capri Drive-In. Coming soon will be photos of the Park Theater
in Augusta, Mich. and theaters I found on a drive west between Kalamazoo
and Lake Michigan.
