My Branch of Mygrant History

During 1754, in Germany, a boy named Heinrich Maikrantz is born. When he reaches manhood, he is obligated to serve in the military. He becomes a soldier in the infantry, a Hessian grenadier. He is one of 30,000 soldiers sent by the German government at the bequest of the British to help put down a revolt by the colonist in America. He departs Germany, traveling by ship to England. Once there he boards another ship to the colonies. It is a long and tiresome voyage, in August of 1776; his ship arrives in America. Heinrich is to fight as well as die if need be for a cause that means nothing to him.

By 1778 he had become disillusioned with the war. He deserts at Mount Holly, NJ. Heinrich must have seen something he liked in America. He makes his way to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There he joins the 7th battalion of the Pennsylvania Malitia, under Captain Arron Scott. He fights with the Colonial Militia Forces until 1782.

By 1786, he has moved his way across Pennsylvania to Westmoreland County, and taken a bride, Anna Elizabeth last name unknown. There she had the first of five sons. There they settle to raise a family. By 1790, his name has evolved to Henry Mygrants. In December of 1795, he becomes ill and dies, leaving a widow, and five children. The only other information about Anna Elizabeth Mygrants is she appears living in East Huntingdon Township of Westmoreland County in 1810.

Other than a birth record, no records have been uncovered for Johannes, first born of Heinrich and Anna.

Christopher, Heinrich and Anna's second child, weds Catherine Poorman. They have three children and live in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In 1824, they move to Richland County, Ohio. At some point, the family moves to Ashland County, Ohio.

Little is known about Heinrich, the third child. We do know his birth date and that he along with his brother Jacob joined the militia in the War of 1812.

Jacob the forth child, weds Elizabeth Reichart sometime after he returns home from his Malitia service. Elizabeth gives birth to three children while living in Westmoreland County. Sometime after 1832, they move the family to Ashland County, Ohio. They have four more children in Ohio. Then in 1842 he uses his fathers' land grant that Heinrich had received for his service in the Colonial Militia, and move most of the family to Eaton County, Michigan, where the ninth child is born.

Joseph, the fifth child of Heinrich an Elizabeth, weds his first wife Margaret Boonbright, they have three children, and in 1818, she dies. Around 1820 he meets and weds Catherine Walters. Joseph and Catherine, along with his children continue to live in Pennsylvania. By 1825, he and Catherine have four more children. Between 1825 and 1828 the family move to Tuscarawas, County, Ohio. Their Joseph and Catherine have another seven children. They live in Ohio until 1856 when most of the family moves to the Zainsville, Indiana area. Joseph, who by the time he moves to Indiana, is 62 years of age. Most of the children have married and have families of their own. They erected a three-sided shelter with only blankets hanging down to cover the front side. A fire was kept burning in front of the shelter all night to keep the wild animals away. As most pioneers Joseph and family are deeply religious. He and Catherine along with other members of the family were Charter members of Mount Zion Church.

Zainsville, Indiana is located on the County line with part of the town being in Lafayette township, Allen county on the north side and part of the town being in Union township, Wells County on the south. Most Indians had been moved to a reservation by 1840 but some had managed to stay behind, others had simply returned from the reservation in Kansas to live here instead, and in fact lived in the area until the early 1900's.
