Book Reviews Index
The intent of these book reveiws are to expose you to some of the commentary
of the various authors and to create interest for further study.
They are not intended to be complete summaries of the works, but merely
excerpts to create a hunger for further exploration. I have tried
to pick out key Christian literature that any serious Christian might want
to be informed about.
The Cost
of Discipleship
by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
"Revival of church life always brings in its trail a richer understanding
of the Scriptures. Behind all the slogans and catchwords of ecclesiastical
controversy, necessary though they are, there arises a more determined
quest for him who is the sole object of it all, for Jesus Christ himself.
. . .In the last resort, what we want to know is not, what would this or
that man, or this or that Church, have of us, but what Jesus Christ himself
wants of us." p. 35
The City of God
St. Augustine
One city is that of men who live according to the flesh. The other
is of men who live accordng to the spirit.
The conclusion is that, in the everlastign City, there will remain
in each and all of us an inalienable freedom of the will, emancipating
us from every evil and filling us with lasting happiness, unclouded by
the memory of any sin or of sanction suffered, yet with not forgetfulness
of our redemption nor any lost of gratitude for our Redeemer.
Pilgrim's Progress
John Bunyan
"Now I saw in my dream, that by this time the pilgrims were got over the
Enchanted ground and entering into the Country of Beulah, whose air was
very sweet and pleasant, here they heard continually the singing of birds.
In this country the Sun shineth night and day."
