The Endurance of Love
by Al Saunders
"Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away." (Song
of Solomon 8:7a, NIV)
The divorce rate continues to remain high. However, according to
George Barna, of even greater concern is that the divorce rate among evangelical
Christians is 4 percent higher than for society in general. Obviously something's
wrong.
Unfortunately it seems that today, "as long as we both shall live"
has been replaced by "as long as we both shall love," or, "as long as you
make me happy," or, "as long as I don't perceive you as a burden to me,"
or some other self-serving vow.
Mature love endures. The waters of adversity can draw two people
closer together and deeper in love, or cause them to give up and go their
own ways. The rivers of tough financial times or serious illness
bring out the true
character of a relationship. Mature love endures. It's called commitment
-- a covenant relationship.
Here's some homework for you: Get out your wedding ceremony book
and ask your wife to join you in repeating your vows to each other. Make
it a regular habit to do this as a reminder of the covenant you made to
each other. Pray together and ask the Lord to help you fulfill this covenant
made before Him and to each other.
