There is No Other Gospel
by George Fessler
************************************
"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called
you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel -- not
that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you
and
want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel
from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed
to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat,
if
anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received,
let that one be accursed! (Galatians 1:6-9, NRSV)

Paul usually includes a thanksgiving to God for the recipients in
the opening of his letters, generally regarding their reputation or progress
in the faith. Not, however, for the Galatians. The tone he immediately
assumes is rather stern, yet deliberate, as a result of their having turned
to a "different gospel," which in fact is not the gospel of Christ
at all. Paul is very concerned for their spiritual welfare and doesn't
hesitate to set the record straight regarding their response to the gospel.
In our post-modern, pluralistic culture, the very idea of "absolute
truth" is challenged. Without holding to absolute truth, what may be "true"
for one is not necessarily "true" for another ó making each person
the
final judge of truth. To the Apostle Paul this was absurd, as he
unreservedly underscores the absolute and exclusive truth of the gospel
he proclaims. If fact, he declares anyone who would preach something other
than what the Galatians had originally received, as being "cursed."
Strong language for sure, but necessary and particularly pertinent in our
world where spirituality (without content) is a cultural buzzword. When
it comes to the message of the gospel, we must draw a line in the sand
-- there is no compromise!
Prayer response: Father, we are humbled by your goodness and undeserved
favor in our lives. Help us appreciate the very message and meaning of
the gospel, which you have freely given to us and has transformed our lives.
Grant us a fresh empowering of your Spirit that we may share the "good
news" of Jesus to those in our circle of influence, with new boldness and
sensitivity. For your glory alone, we pray. Amen.
