Have only just found an ancestor and ship he came to Australia on. Although his name is actually McFEETERS William James, he is listed as a passenger by the name of Wm. J. McFEETAR on the ship Algiers, month of June 1857 age 21. Code B. Fiche 126. Page 003. He was Irish so don't know if he came directly from Ireland on that ship or if he would have had to board that ship in UK. Could SKS please give me more info: eg Date and place of departure. Possibly a picture (drawing) of the ship. Does the fiche give more info on a person, rather than just his name and age?
I have the complete passenger list for Algiers but it does not give his wife (Esther Madigan) as sailing with him, and they were supposedly married in Ireland.
Looking for what ever information can be provided on the "ALGIERS", which sailed from Ireland [possibly Newry] on 27 Mar 1857 to Australia. James TRUESDEL was supposedly aboard this ship.

McKay

From: Valma Ray on Thu, 21 Aug 2003 (my email bounced 6 Dec 2004)

Hi Elizabeth
I was browsing through web pages under Panton and came on your page under McKay. Since 1990c I have been researching my ancestry. Thought you may be interested to know that my ancestry includes Jane Panton m James McKay. Jane Panton (daughter of Alexander Panton (baptised 24.4.1808 Monquhitter Aberdeenshire (residence Mill of Idoch a farm in NE Scotland - Alexander was a baker in Banff) married Jane Grant (birth details uncertain) 26.5.1833 Macduff, Parish of Gamrie, Aberdeenshire.

Children born to them were :
1. Jane Panton born 18.8.1834 Gamrie, Banff, Aberdeenshire
2. Mary Panton born 22.4.1836 Gamrie, Banff, Aberdeenshire
3. Margaret Panton born 13.3.1838 Gamrie, Banff, Aberdeenshire
4. Alexander Panton born 13.2.1841 London (residence 60 New court, Waterloo Lambeth, London)
5. George Simpson Panton born 21.6.1843 London (resident 1 Smiths Place Denmark Street, St George East, Middlesex, London)
6. Jannet Simpson Panton born 12.2.1846 (residence 7 Lower Grove Street, St George East, Middlesex, London)

Alexander Panton's parents were :
Alexander Panton baptised 17.4.1774 Lt.Colp, Turriff, Aberdeenshire
Margaret Wilson born 22.3.1773 Down, Gamrie, Aberdeenshire, baptised 23.3.1773 Gamrie, Aberdeenshire.
They were married 26.8.1800 Turriff and 6.9.1800 Monquhitter, both in Aberdeenshire (it was the custom for the marriage to be registered in parishes of both spouses).

A sister of Alexander Panton namely Mary Panton married Alexander Simpson (hence the middle name Simpson given to two of Alexander and Janes children).

1. My ancester Jane Panton married James Mackay (sometimes spelt McKay) 30.12.1850 St. Andrews, Holburn, London and they emigrated to Australia.
2. I have found no trace of Mary Panton's marriage or death anywhere
3. I have found no trace of Margaret Panton's marriage or death anywhere
4. Alexander married Sarah Ann Rumblelow in Bristol 1869. No further information available.
5. George was a postmaster and moved around the world a good deal. One child, Hugh Grant Panton, was born in Dublin 14.7.1884, died December 1963 Florida. One of his children was George Simpson Panton born 23.9.1916.
6. Jannett no further information available.

I have visited NE Scotland a couple of times and spent considerable time researching original documents, parish records, library records etc. As yet I have not been able to trace the movements of Alexander and Jane Panton beyond the 1851 London census. They are not in any death records as far as I can trace at present.

I have the marriage and shipping records for Jane and James Mackay and the subsequent records of births, deaths, marriages of their children.

James and Jane had 11 children.
1. James Alexander born 12.10.1851 in St Andrew, Holburn, London, married Isabella Scott 1867 Maldon, died 6.5.1916 EMelb
2. Catherine Jane Mackay born 8.1.1855
3. Finlay Panton Mackay born 1856 Maldon, married 1878 Maldon to Martha Dunkin Trewin, died 26.8.1924 Surrey Hills
4. Jean Panton Mackay born 1857 Maldon, married James Currie 6.4.1874 Maldon, died 21.11.1900 Bendigo (my ancestor)
5. Margaret Panton Mackay born 1860 Maldon, married James Lane 1880 Maldon
6. George Panton Mackay born 1863 Maldon, married Mary Ann Griffin 1884 Maldon, died 16.2.1922 Melbourne Hospital
7. Alexander Bernie Mackay born 1864 Maldon married Catherine (Katie) Hilda Harley 1886, died Melbourne 11.8.1940
8. Maryanne Mackay born May 1867 Maldon, died 28 April 1869 Maldon
9. David Grant Mackay born 1869 Maldon, married 1891 Maldon Mary Jane Ryan, died 1952 Epson
10. Hugh William Mackay born 1870 Maldon, died 1883 Maldon
11. Jannet Mary Mackay born 1875 Maldon, died 1876 Maldon

James T Mackay born 1823 Thurso Scotland, died 25 4.1897 Melbourne
Jane Mackay (nee Panton) born 18.8.1834 Gamrie Scotland, died 22.8.1879 Maldon.

I have the descendants of most of their children. Colin Panton MacKay and Ethel Goudge had another child Cyril Colin Mackay born 1907.

Val Mortimer.

The use of Panton as a second name for Colin Panton McKay born 1883, suggests it may be James's mother's name. I then found a death for Jane Mackay 1834 - 1879 #8333 aged 45, daughter of Jane Grant and Alexander Panton of Banffshire. So I worked backwards to find the possible relatives of James Alexander McKay c1845
James MacKay and Jane Panton 1834 - 1879 #8333 aged 45, daughter of Alexander Panton and Jane Grant of Banffshire, came c1854 had 10 children born at Maldon in Victoria.

Greetings,
I can confirm that Seth PERSSE was a witness at the wedding of Fanny Emily Persse (aged 18) to Duncan McLennan, widower (Aged 31) in 1866.
I have a copy of their wedding certificate.

Hello Elizabeth,
Thanks for responding. At the moment I am trying to find the burial details of Fanny Emily McLennan (latest clue Melb. General Cemetery for me to check.)
For your information, there is a large but ancient photo of the McLennan brothers in the Matilda centre at Winton, Central Queensland. They were responsible for drilling the Number 1 Artesian bore that provided Winton with a permanent water supply. These would have been Duncan's sons. One, John James Farquhar McLennan (Jack) was my husband's grandfather. I believe the name Farquhar had some significance, as did the name Rollo - second name of Jack's daughter Jean. SSo far, I don't know why. Regards,
Kathleen McLennan
