Angels exist according to the traditions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The concept originated in the Orient, but the figurative type of angel comes from the winged Greek goddess, Nike. It was not until the fourth century that they were shown as having wings, and not until the late Gothic period did artists begin to illustrate angels of neutral-gendered beauty.

Five centuries ago angels were often depicted as rosy-cheeked chubby babies. Perhaps the artist sought to comfort parents in an age of mercilessly high infant mortality. Cupids, though not strictly bona-fide angels, are also portrayed as naked babies with wings. Their mission, however, is specific: couples shot with Cupid's arrows have no choice but to fall in love.
Incidents have been recorded throughout history of miraculous rescue by strangers who have, in retrospect been labeled "angels". These luminous figures always seem to arrive "out of the blue," deliver the victim from certain danger and then disappear in such a way that can only be described as impossible.
Perhaps it is not too great a leap to suggest that in our rational world we all carry around in a secret place, not in our heads but in our hearts, a belief in angels.
Wings of the Angels
The days pass hard
as problems grow and grow
You put on your best face
but hopes all fade low.
Death reaches your way
while the dark winds blow
But your spirit is strong
as friends in heaven know.
So sleep in the wings of the angels
let them guard your dreams
Wake with the love of the angels
and the world will be better than it seems.
As the years pass by
and problems come and go
Hold your hopes and dreams
even when others say no.
Let lifes light break dark clouds
and make your spirit glow
And always remember friends above
waiting with a shining halo.
So sleep in the wings of the angels
let them guard your dreams
And wake with the love of the angels
and the world will be better than it seems...
Real-life angels understand difficulties
Real-life angels are what "inner beauty" is all about.
They walk beside you when you could do with
~If You Come Across an Angel~
Every day, in the world around us,
real-life angels are doing the things they do...
and bringing more smiles to the world around them.
Real-life angels build bridges instead of walls.
They don't play hide-and-seek with the truth,
they do whatever they can to help you.
and always give the benefit of the doubt.
They don't hold others up to the standards
they can't live by themselves.
Real-life angels don't hold things against you;
the only thing they hold...is you.
They take your hand in theirs
when you could use a little reassurance.
a little guidance and direction in your life.
And they support you in your attempts to do what is right.
Real-life angels multiply your smiles
and add to your integrity.
