Meanwhile, back in the here and now, Matt's brother Tony is sweating in the line outside the Peter Pan ride at Disney World in Florida. "Did I miss something really cool?" he asks the pack of punks he's hanging with. "I have? Okay." He pauses to listen and then returns to the cell phone. "My girlfriend said I've been on it before, so, whatever."
Tony is on the road with Good Charlotte as the band plays the Honda Civic Tour. "I'm haning out with thsoe guys, just kicking it down here," he says. "Good Charlotte are, like, my best friends. When I'm not on the road, I don't know what to do at home, so I just smoke pot and watch TV. I got bored with doing that for two months, so they said come out."
Matt and Tony have been able to get in a little goof-off time since the new disc was released in June. And they've earned it: Tony points out that "Mest" is self-titled for a good reason. "After eight years and four records, we've finally [gone] in a real direction," he says. "We're finally developing our own sound, and it's like [we said]: We should just call [the album] "Mest" because it describes us; it's describes the record. It's everything our band is about."
Matt concurs, adding, "Some of the songs on our first two [albums] with Maverick, I wasn't fully pleased with playing live or even having them on the record; especially our singles really pissed me right off. But this record, Tony's songwriting has improved, [and] Jeremiah's [Rangel, guitar] has improved. John Feldmann produced all three of our records, and I think he's improved enormously, too. We were a lot more free to do what we wanted in the studio this time."
The album's all fine and good, but where Mest really come alive is onstage, as Vans Warped Tour crowds will learn daily this summer. "We put so much work into [the album], but what it really comes down to for us is playing live," Tony agrees. "That's what we take pride in. That's everything our band is about."
And with that, the singer concludes, he's got to go. See, he and the crew are heading to the It's A Small World ride. No kidding.
