"California punkers grow up without getting old."
Sure, a guest spot by Good Charlotte's Benji Madden stamps Mest's third album with pop-punk cred, but what's more notable about "Mest" are the suprising influences that push the band beyond three chords and aching vocal hooks to reveal the real smarts behind Mest's smart-assed nature. "Rooftops" opens with the same coins-in-your-pockets jangle of the Cure, and peaks into the winding guitar riffs of "Your Promise". And while the frequent heartfelt lyrics belted over ska-tinged breakdowns should satisfy the new school, "Paradise (122nd And Highland)" is a genuine reggae muder ballad that's also genuinely catchy.
