Karitane

Huriawa Peninsula - KaritaneHuriawa peninsula - Karitane

Photo taken by Mary Hall, January 1999

Karitane is a small fishing village on the East coast of New Zealand's South Island, Te Waipounamou, about 20 minutes' drive north of Dunedin.

Arriving from the south on the Coast Road, the first street you come to is Parata Avenue, named after a well-known local family.  At the end of Parata Avenue is a track down to the beach, ending at the spot where this photo was taken.

At the base of the peninsula, where it joins the mainland, is a narrow neck of land.  On the other side is the Waikouaiti River estuary.

My mother's family have holidayed at Karitane since before I was born.   The sea is biting cold all year round.  There is surf, fishing in the estuary or out to sea, rock-pools to play in, mussels on the rocks to gather at low tide, and a choice of plenty, or nothing at all to do, whichever you prefer.
