Buford Highway

Buford Highway runs from midtown Atlanta up to Buford, GA, up in the upper portion of Gwinnett County.

The limited access portion was the original roadway for I-85 in Northeast Atlanta. During the 80's, the roadway was completely reconstructed to provide a much wider roadway -- and given the terrain constraints, it was far easier to create an elevated, much widened, roadway. It also allowed for the construction of the I-85/GA 400 interchange (which, in my opinion, is rather poorly constructed).

The original I-85 roadway had two lanes in either direction, with a grass median. The southern end connected with I-75 to form the Downtown Connector; itself only 3 lanes in either direction for quite a while.

The present I-85 is six lanes in either direction, connecting with I-75 at the large Brookwood interchange -- Buford Highway skirts this interchange at its southern end.

The present Buford Highway is still two lanes in either direction, and is treated as a collector/distributor roadway for I-85; at least by the locals. When I-85 is backed up (not an unusual occurance during the rush hours - which are approaching Los Angeles proportions), plenty of traffic can be seen on Buford Highway.

Georgia state highways exist concurrently with ALL US & Interstate routes. Georgia does not post concurrent highway numbers on their interstate highways. Additionally, Georgia state highways numbers are not always posted with their US counterparts on Interstate signage. ALL highway numbers are shown on this table. Routes that are posted on their co-existing US routes, but are not posted on the corresponding interstate exits are posted inside parentheses. Unposted numbers are shown in GREY in standard route shields. Also, Georgia Interstate exits are numbered concurrenly as of this date (2/98). By the end of the year (1998), exits will be numbered based on mileage -- this site will updated at that point.

Much thanks to C.C. Slater, Ken Eikart and Jim K for the encouragement and inspiration, along with everyone on misc.transport.road. Of course, this is not the end; there are still more highways left to do in and around Atlanta. Add to that the Chicago/Indiana pages under construction, and my plate is full.
