The Eisenhower System of Interstate Defense Highways has it's genesis in post-war America when commuting from suburb to work and back again became the norm of American life and a part of the "American Dream."

The highways were developed primarily to service the major metropolitan areas around the country and to provide internal travel within those areas as well.
