Interstate 420 was a part of the interstate highway system that was killed here in the Atlanta area. The highway was to run east to west midway between downtown and the airport -- originally from I-20 on the east side of town near the present I-20 intersection with Flat Shoals Avenue near the Decatur/Atlanta border in DeKalb County, west, then northwest/northerly to an intersection with I-20 in Douglas County, somewhere west of the present I-20 intersection with Thornton Rd (GA 6).
The section of the road that was actually built was the Lakewood Freeway through the southwest side of Atlanta and the northern edge of East Point between I-75/85 on the east and I-285 on the west.
The present freeway is a four-lane with a grass median, and narrow to non-existant shoulders. It is certainly not up to present interstate standards. The eastern end of the road runs up to the parking area for the Coca-Cola Lakewood Amphitheatre, a popular outdoor concert venue for Metro Atlanta.
And as is the seemingly common practice in Georgia, the freeway was "renamed" for someone "important" around here just before the Olympics.
