DREW'S DELIBERATIONS

Our brief visit to Belgium was definitely worthwhile. Upon arrival in Brussels we phoned around for a room unsuccessfully. In the true spirit of independent travel we simply got back on a train headed for Brugge near the coast. We got two beds in a four-bed dorm in a hostel, our first in Europe. Brugge is a small walled town that has been fully restored after major destruction in WWII. The town is spiderwebbed with canals, which make it a photographer’s delight. Brugge has the reputation of being one of the top tourist destinations in northern Europe but the tourism is not stifling, especially at night when the busses are gone and the streets are empty. This is a wonderful town to wander in. We did manage to find two dorm beds in Brussels on the way to Amsterdam. We cruised the old part of town including the very impressive main square. Our visit to Belgium was highlighted with a visit to a lambic brewery where we learned how they brew beer without adding any yeast. It tastes like a cross between beer and wine. This is an easy country to travel in as almost everyone we encountered spoke perfect English.
