The one time we attempted a run on this (1997.04.26), over half the drops were unrunnable
due to either the configuration of the drops or limbo-logs and snags.
Drops of note include:
|
A sweet double ledge combination (not unlike 'Lower Dog Leg' on the
Lower Yellow Dog). A dome of rock diverts most of the flow into a right
side chute over a short pourover ledge. Perhaps 20' leads to an irregular
slot dropping into a hole (not a problem), as the water sheets across a
shallow shelf toward another irregular jumbled ledge pitching off into
a good pool.
|
This is followed almost immediately by a 'flume' where the river is squeezed down a chute barely boat width and perhaps 20 yards long before dropping into a pool. Unfortunately, right at the end, a large chunk of rock overhangs the channel. Avoiding a face-(and-body-)plant on this rock would be impossible.
Portage left.
|
An island as the river twisted to the left. Left side is mostly
a stairstep 'overflow' channel, filled with lumber. River right stays up
around the island before jumping off an irregular ledge face. River right
lands on jagged rock; tight against the island (or center, angled left)
would make a sweet boof. Unfortunately, again, this was wooded up when
we were there.
|
This was followed by a nasty, angular rock jumble, then a squeeze into a mini-canyon with a boiling undercut to the right. Portage left.
|
Another sweet sliding drop (with a couple steps) into a punchable
hole in the pool at the base. (A limbo-log blocked the top of this drop
when we ran this, forcing us to 'seal-start' part way down the first pitch
of this drop.)
|
A narrowing of the river to drop through a two step drop. River
left shore rock diverts half the river into a diagonal slot, directed into
the right shore (rock). Shallow angular rock fills this area. A second
ledge drops a couple feet into the pool below. With enough water to cover
the angular rock in the 'pocket,' a right-to-center run would be possible.
Unfortunately there were overhanging logs precluding this. We portaged
on the right.
|
The grand finale (extremely wooded up) begins with a series of rocky
islands and what would be fun, technical maneuvering before the bottom
drops out. The river twists to the right and slides down sloping bedrock.
River right (most of the flow) drops into a huge wrapping wave, as the
water is diverted back to the left along a tall wall of rock, through churning,
boiling waves and holes. With enough flow, a smooth slide river left would
drop you off beyond all the worst action on the right. (Portage
right).
Bottom line: not likely to be a priority on anyone's "to-do" list other
than perhaps once to see the sights.
