Flat water with good current (at runnable levels) flows through downed trees and along the I94
interstate for the first 0.5 mile. Either side of the bridge at Busse Road
(and Maple Creek Farm) you'll encounter some small rips. From here the
gradient picks up a bit, and numerous class I-II- rapids and riffles are encountered.
As you near some houses which are on Hwy.164 you will encounter a bridge
across the river. At high water, this could require
some quick maneuvering, and possibly ducking to clear the bridge
safely. For this reason I would rate it almost bordering on a class III in high
water.
Not far beyond this, you'll round more bends and come to the
highway 164 bridge, a two tunnel affair, with a 'sky-light' in the middle.
Just around the bend lies the worst hazard
for high water navigation - the railroad bridge immediately
east of Hwy.164. Look at this before doing the run.
At 6" on the gauge, it is necessary to duck a little to clear it; at somewhere
over a foot, you may have to hold your breath (I.E. roll under).
Shortly after, you will join with the Fox River, with considerably more
volume. A short paddle under a couple of bridges will bring you to
your vehicle. |
