These two illustrations are part of a series I began to work on for a childrens fantasy story but did not complete. It tells of the underworld populated by an ignorant race who have no drive or incentive to accomplish anything for themselves. They capture humans who have fallen into their world, enslave them and make them work for the underworld people. The underworld people have heard rumours of the human world, their buildings, machines, technology and all the trappings of modernity that we take for granted. There is a usurper in the race of the underworld people however, an old woman, who has tasted the world of the humans, and knows it would give rise to a more evil and destructive force in the hands of the underworld people. She persuades all humans to only give part of their technology to the underworld people, to hold back on vital information and techniques, and where possibleto lead the underworld people on the wrong track altogether, often with hilarious results.
