A Name

The life they lived you’ll never know,
Don’t even pretend.
And remember that you’ll never know,
Might not have been the end.
What could you have done for them?
Would you reach out and hold their hand?
And what if you could not hold on,
Would you ever understand?

So hold yourself, you do no wrong,
I know life was not the same.
Hang in there just a little longer,
Don’t fall just for a name.

You left a few loose ends there,
And loose is how they’ll stay.
If your nightmare turns out true,
Then your life will end that day.
What if you forget that sound?
Forget that sight that you still see,
But I need to dream that they still feel,
Dream that somewhere they dream of me.

You tell yourself they feel,
You pray they know you’re there.
Logic screams that your dreams are lies,
But your heart has never cared.

What would you do
If you saw them on the street?
What could you say to them
To let them know just what they mean?
Let’s leave that alone for now,
Even if something is amiss.
For logic may be onto something,
When ignorance is bliss.

So hold yourself, you do no wrong,
I know life was not the same.
Hang in there just a little longer,
Don’t fall just for a name.
