Aberdeen

Aberdeen is a place that is deceptively seductive. At first glance, it looks like an industrial center (which it is). But, it is also home to some very unique architecture, stunning parks, and a healthy nightlife. First, the architecture. Most (it seems like all) of Aberdeen's buildings are made of granite. The effect is to make the whole town look a very striking grey. Offsetting this grey facade are some of the most wonderful parks in all of Scotland. The best park is Durie Park, home of the Winter Gardens. Located about 2 miles south of the city center, this hothouse complex houses an astonishing variety of plant life. Everything from cactus to fuscias are housed in here. Its a wonderful place to lose oneself for a few hours. Then, once the sun goes down, there's still plenty to do. There's a cluster of nightclubs on Windmill Brae, below Bridge St. in downtown Aberdeen. These clubs are open until 2 a.m. most evenings.

Places to Eat - There's a wonderful kebob restaurant just around the corner from the nightclubs on Windmill Brae. Not only is it reasonably priced (kebobs are £3.00); but, it is also open until 3 a.m. Since the clubs close at 2 a.m., it's the only restaurant close to the clubs that's open for a snack after a night of clubbing. Be sure to talk to the clerks behind the counter. They're full of great stories about Aberdeen.

Places to Stay - We stayed at the Merkland Guest House at 12 Merkland Road East, which is about halfway between downtown Aberdeen and old Aberdeen. All of the rooms have a private bathroom, t.v., and telephone. Cost was £20/person for a double room. The rooms were very comfortable, the breakfast was great, and the hosts were very friendly. The only downside to the place is that it's on the same street as one of the largest football stadiums in Scotland. As a result, parking can be a problem on game days. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend a stay at the Merkland Guest House. Their telephone number is 01224-634-451.
