The Roman pharos (lighthouse) on the grounds of Dover Castle. The pharos is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) complete building in England.

Dover

There's only one thing to see in this otherwise uninteresting town, and that's the castle. The castle is a well preserved fortress on a hill overlooking the town and the English Channel. There's enough history at the castle to please almost anyone, from the Roman lighthouse to the Hellfire Caves used in World War II. There are also some great views from the battlements of the ships in the Channel and the coast of France.

The Keep at the castle is currently undergoing restoration. While you can still get into it, the exterior has been totally covered in scaffolding. Price to enter the castle is £6.00. At 4:30 p.m., the price drops to £3.00. The reason the price drops is that you have only one and a half hours to see the castle. If you hurry, it can be done. However, you may have to make a choice between the Hellfire Caves and the castle proper. Tours of the Hellfire Caves are seperate from those of the castle. They begin on the hour and take about an hour.

While at the castle, take note of the rather large radar facility just north of the castle. It's a vivid reminder that while Europe is at peace now, the British keep a wary eye on activities on Channel and continental activities just in case.
