Castle Howard taken from the grounds on the south side of the house.

Castle Howard

The first view we had of Castle Howard was as we drove south from Helmsley. From the road, we first saw a large lake. Then, a green hill rose up from the lake. At the top of the hill was a magnificent Baroque building. All of us in the car said, 'Wow!' That reaction best sums up Castle Howard. The building and the grounds are incredible in their own right. However, they are harmonously blended in a way that makes both features even more impressive than they are individually. Castle Howard should be a stop on anyone's itinerary. Cost is £6.50 to visit the house and the grounds. It's only £4.00 to visit the grounds (quite a tour in their own right). If you choose to visit the grounds, be sure to use the free shuttle to get you around, as the grounds are rather expansive. A discounted student price of £5.50 to visit the house and the grounds is available.
