In World War 2 the Australian Military
Forces (AMF) served
under Allied Forces HQ. The AMF was led by a General and composed of the following:
2nd Australian
Imperial Force (AIF). The AIF saw service overseas and consisted of
volunteers. The 2nd AIF wore shoulder patches with a
light grey outline.
Permanent Military Forces which consisted
of Professional career soldiers, of which many officers had stayed in
the military after serving in World War 1.
Citizen Military Forces (CMF) or Militia.
Consisted of citizen conscripts who were employed in the
defence of mainland Australia and its territories. The definition of Australia came to
include New Guinea and some Pacific Islands.
