Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: 'Penumbra'

Worf is lost after a Jem'Hadar attack, and Ezri sets out to rescue him. Meanwhile, Sisko must decide whether to marry Kasidy Yates, and Dukat begins a new plan.

There's plenty going on in this episode as Deep Space Nine launches into its final few episodes with the first episode of what is being plugged as a four-parter. It also sets in motion several character arcs that can be wrapped up at season's end, as Ezri and Worf renew the relationship that he and Jadzia had when they are trapped on a deserted planet.

It's not exactly a problem, but this episode is all set-up and no real pay-off, and therefore a little difficult to review on its own merits, as each episode from here on in follows on. Having said this, the Worf/Ezri storyline is welcome, as sorting our the pair's feelings has been long overdue. The Sisko storyline builds on his relationship with the Prophets, and Dukat finally proves that he has a relationship with the Pah Wraiths when he talks to Damar about his lpan, resulting in an alteration of his physical appearance.

Parts of Penumbra are rather slow, but this is understandable as with a story arc this complex, it's obviously going to take a few episodes to build up to something. Interesting enough, but better if you take it as a prelude of things to come, and of course essential viewing to keep up with later events.
