Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: 'Shadows and Symbols'

Sisko goes in search of a means to bring back the Prophets, Worf goes on a dangerous mission to ensure Jadzia’s entry into Stovokor, and Kira has to stop the plans of the station’s newest Romulan.

There is slightly too much going on in this episode, but it all just about manages to get squeezed in. Of all the elements, it is Worf’s sub-plot that takes more of a back seat, but there are still some nice scenes between the Klingon and his accompaniment (O’Brien, Bashir and Quark), all of whom have come on the mission to pay their respects and would like some credit from Worf for coming.

Kira gets her first chance to prove her worth as a Colonel (though it still doesn’t sound right)as she takes on the Senator in a game of bluff. It’s an unlikely development in the end, as the Bajoran wins. If I’d been the Senator, I would have shot her out of the sky for trying to be clever.

The best element once again though is the Sisko storyline. Apart from the always welcome repartee between the Sisko boys, Dax also gets her first chance to interact with her old friends, and the result is plenty of fun. We get to see Benny Russell (from Far Beyond the Stars again, and this time his appearance actually makes some semblance of sense, and Sisko's earlier vision takes on a new meaning. On top of this, there is also a surprise revelation, which as with the best surprises comes as a shock, yet also makes perfect sense with what has gone before. Superb writing, and acting, so let's hope that DSN continues in this vein throughout the season.
