Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: 'When it Rains...'

Kira is sent to Cardassia with Garak and Odo to help Damar form an effective Resistance, to the irritation of other Cardassians. Meanwhile, Gowron arrives to take over command of the Klingon forces and Julian makes a disturbing discovery.

Whilst it's hardly had the kind of arc Babylon 5 did, Deep Space Nine is really showing JMS how it should have been done in its last few episodes. The fact that different writers on the staff have managed to pen closely interlinked stories featuring so many plot threads is a real testament to what Star Trek can do when it puts its mind to it.

Although a weaker segment, When it Rains... is still an important and interesting episode as it sets up the next few threads after the last episode brought certain elements to a temporary closure. It's good to see the characters being used so well, with most of the regulars gettting paired into separate groups all working to a different goal. Julian gets a chance to show just how clever he is, Gowron makes a long-awaited return, and Kira gets a chance at some irony as she shows the Cardassians what a Resistance is like.

The only downside is that this episode is so closely linked to the next one that it comes to a dead stop. Admittedly it gives an air of excitement for next week, but it would have been nice for at least one thing to have been finished off. Although, the Dukat/Winn plotline takes a pause after this episode.
