Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: 'Treachery, Faith and the Great River'

When Weyoun contacts Odo wishing to defect, the Changeling is put in an unusual situation.

This is one of the most interesting episodes so far in DSN's final season, as there's a lot going on without much happening, if you see what I mean. It's been revealed already that Weyoun is only one of many other Weyoun clones, but this is the first time a story has been built around the concept. With his previous treachery (plus the episode's title), the viewer spends the entire episode waiting for the defecting Weyoun to show his true colours. All credit to the writers for not resorting to this cheap ploy.

Coupled with this, Jeffrey Combs' two central performances are perfect, giving the impression of two different yet similar people, but still not quite the same as the now deceased Weyoun.

This year is definitely one to watch again as the plot strands are coming together for what should be a great season end. Damar's drinking seems to be getting steadily worse, a Weyoun seems to have been killed at the Cardassian's hand, and the defecting version gives Odo some important and vital news that is bound to have a bearing on the changeling's future.

The B-plot of Nog trying to obtain an important component for the Defiant through trading works nicely as well, providing some comic relief from the seriousness of Odo's situation. It may not be a very original concept for DSN, but it's no less welcome here. A subtle and effective episode.
