LEXX: Stan Down

Stan engages in a battle of wills with Prince, Priest moves against his aide and Kai does a search and rescue.

This is one of the best LEXX episodes to date, with lashings of sublimely nasty humour and all manner of odd things happening that show the series has no respect for anything. The Canadian writers seem to be taking great delight in taking the piss out of American attitudes and there's a perverse pleasure in seeing Orlando destroyed thanks to a slight miscalculation from the LEXX. The family heading to the pleasure capital are also worthy of mention, especially the world-weary and irritable father who conveys so much with just a grimace.

The focus here is on the power play and relationship between Prince and Priest, not to mention the First Lady. The stupidity of everyone except Prince is hilarious, as he tricks them into blowing up Orlando thanks to Stan's enthusiasm and lack of thought and then gets Cuba blown to pieces as well in retaliation. The press conference before this is superb, with a clearly-bearded Priest in front of an obvious Washington monument convinces two stupid journalists that Cuba nuked Orlando. The final joke where the President is taken to Dallas is wonderful, especially the way even the viewer doesn't quite realize what's going on at first.

The story ends with the LEXX heading away from Earth, but it seems unlikely they'll be away for long, especially with the LEXX (who's got some of the best lines once again) being very, very hungry. With the return of Giggerota and a possessed cat that is hilariously taken over and then explodes, the episode is high on weird and fun, and it works like a charm. There's nowhere safe, the writers are totally unpredictable and rather than limiting LEXX's premise, it seems this trip to Earth has expanded it like never before...
