The Three Refuges

Since a Buddhist starts learning the teachings and understands the virtues of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, he or she will take three Refuges as follows:

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammasambuddhassa.
Homage to Him, the Exalted, the Worthy, the Fully Enlightened One!

Buddham saranam gacchami.
Dhammam saranam gacchami.
Sangham saranam gacchami.

I go to the Buddha as my refuge.
I go to the Dhamma as my refuge.
I go to the Sangha as my refuge.
