The McMartin(e) Family History goes way back, again, in the History of our Canadian neighbors, but, it started right here in the good ole' US of A, as usual! Well, actually, it ALL started in Scotland! That being said, it should be noted that one of the McMartins actually founded a Canadian Town that to this day holds his name; Martintown, Ontario, Canada, originally named McMartins Mills, because of the number of Mills in the immediate area. But more about Lt. Malcolm McMartin later. Read more about Historical Martintown and Williamstown here.

John MC MARTINE was born about 1755 in Killin, Perthshire, Scotland . He died in 1789 in Martintown, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. Helen CAMERON (b.1759 d.ABT 1851 at 92 years of age) married John McMartine on 18 Oct 1779 in Fonda, Montgomery County, New York, USA. Helen was christened on 15 Jun 1765 in Petty, Inverness, Scotland. She died in Martintown, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Martintown, Charlottenburgh, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of 11 children, one of which was Nancy Anne McMartin.

Nancy Anne McMartin (b.1782 d.1852) was born in Martintown, Ontario, Canada.  Where she died has yet to be uncovered, but it would seem logical that she died in L'Original where her husband died. She married John O'Brian (Jr.)(b.1778 in Johnstown, Fulton, New York d.1858) in Johnstown, Fulton County New York, USA. He died in L'Original, Ontario, Canada. All together they had 8 children, five daughters and three sons.

It was one of these five sons that brought this line to the present day. It was my G-G-Grandfather Peter O'Brian, John and Anne's fifth child, and number two son. John moved, as far as we can determine, to L'Original, Ontario, Canada as a young man. It would appear at this point in our research, that he spent the rest of his life in L'Original. Other than what you have read here, we have very little information on the life of John and Anne O'Brian (McMartin), but we are still researching!  An interestng note; it was this particular generation that dropped the letter "E" from the end of the name McMartin, having previously been spelled "McMartine." Research does not indicate why this change was made, whether it was clerical on the part of "officials" (usual method) or if it was a Family decision!

John was the son of John O'Brian (Sr.) (who's birth date is uncertain at the time of this writing but it is believed that he died about 1782) and Christy (Christian) Grant (who's birth and death dates are also uncertain at this time).
