Chapter Twenty-three
Hailee slowly made her way up the driveway; Jonathan was a few feet behind her; his baseball bag hanging loosely over his shoulder while he hummed to Marry had a little lamb. Hailee was trying to ignore his humming even though it was louder then anything; she didn’t want to freak out on him just yet. Turning around she stopped and looked at Jon. He smiled at her and stopped humming walking towards her.
“Do you mind? The first few minutes of humming was okay, but a half hour of hearing the same song being hummed is enough to drive a mad man sane!” Hailee said turning around and walking a little faster to the front door.
“Is your dad home? Remember what he said Friday?” Jonathan asked this time not knowing Hailee stopped and running into the back of her.
“No, he’s not home… he is off playing ‘lets-get-married’ with Justin… and before you ask about my mom, yes she is home. Her and Sarah are here.” Hailee said shoving her elbow back and hitting Jonathan in the stomach.
Jonathan was quiet after that; he didn’t know what else to ask to stab the quietness that sprang up on them after Hailee was finished with baseball practice. Little did Jonathan know Hailee felt guilty, not for what she and he did… but she felt guilty for not telling her mom? She told her mom everything, but this big thing, even though Jonathan wasn’t the first person she slept with she still felt guilty. Maybe it was because she didn’t tell her mom about the first time.
Even though they would fight and Hailee would proclaim she hated her mom, she never kept anything from her, and Adrea really never kept anything from Hailee.
They both walked in the house; Sarah was sitting on the floor playing with the twins. Adrea was in the laundry room cleaning clothes. Hailee smiled at Sarah and kept walking towards the laundry room, she turned around a looked at Jonathan who was a few feet from her.
“Stay, what are you thinking? GO talk to Sarah…. She is going to be your sister-in-law!” Hailee said giving Jonathan a dirty look as she turned around and finished her walk to where her mother was.
Hailee stood there watching as Adrea folded some of her clothes. Sighing she walked the rest of the way into the little room. With out taking her eyes off the clothes Adrea started to talk to her.
“How was baseball practice?” Hailee could tell in her mom’s voice that something was wrong.
“The same as always, I’m the best player…” Hailee half smiled biting her lower lip, “Mom what’s wrong, you sound like you’ve been crying.” Hailee added after a few seconds of silence.
“It’s nothing don’t worry about it.” Adrea said grabbing a pile of clothes and walking out of the room to put the clothing away.
That is when Hailee knew, she knew for a fact something was wrong. Her heart stopped when she seen what was sitting on the dryer; a condom wrapper… not just any one… the one that had been used in her room, not with Jonathan… but for her first time. Hailee left the room and followed Adrea up the stairs where she was putting away some of JC’s clothes.
“Mom, tell me what is wrong, why have you been crying!” Hailee asked shutting the bedroom door; this way Jonathan or Sarah can’t hear them talking.
“I think your father is cheating on me.” Adrea said flat out, it was the truth. She thought this, because she couldn’t even comprehend that her daughter would be sexually active.
Hailee looked at the back of her mom’s head before she finally spoke up.
“Dad wouldn’t ever, in a million years cheat on you. You know that…” Hailee trailed off when Adrea turned around.
“Well, that’s what I thought until I found a condom wrapper in the dirty clothes. The least he could do is PICK UP! I mean, FUCK I would rather have him tell me he is cheating on me then find out by means of condom wrapper in dirty clothes.” Adrea said opening the closet door and hanging up a few shirts.
“Mom that wasn’t his…” Hailee said trailing off
“You don’t have to stick up for him Hailee, it’s no use.” Adrea said running her hand over her eyes as she placed another shirt on a hanger and hung it up in the closet.
“I know it’s not his… mom…it’s mine, that’s how I know it’s not his…” Hailee said watching as Adrea’s arm slowly raised to hang up another shirt in the closet.
“Yo…yours?” Adrea said turning around and looking at her daughter, shock and relief were on her face, relief that JC hadn’t cheated on her, but shock because her daughter had had sex. “When? Why… with who?” Adrea stuttered looking at her daughter.
Hailee sat there and told her mom what she wanted to know. Of course Adrea wasn’t too happy about this situation, but there really wasn’t anything she could really do about it now. She even laughed when Hailee told her how JC threw Jonathan out on Friday almost ripping his head off.
“What are you trying to prove Hailee? That you’re a big girl?” Adrea asked sighing after hearing what she asked to hear.
“No, I wasn’t trying to prove anything. What happened with Adam was just a thing it didn’t really mean anything… I know you are mad at me but…” Adrea cut Hailee off.
“And Jonathan, you are going to tell me you two were save? I don’t need to be a grandma at 30.” Adrea said chewing on her lower lip.
“Yeah… Jonathan, well I like him. Does that give me any credit at all?” Hailee asked not looking at Adrea.
“So it wasn’t save? You are telling me that you had sex with him in your bedroom Friday and it wasn’t save. You could get pregnant; you at that moment could have ruined your life.” Adrea said standing up.
“But I didn’t ruin my life, I’m not pregnant… mom…” Adrea cut Hailee off again.
“You do understand that you’re grounded. And Jonathan…” This time Hailee cut Adrea off
“Is down stairs in the front room.” Hailee said
She didn’t expect Adrea to grab her hand and pull her down the stairs, but that was exactly what Adrea did. When they got down stairs Jonathan was sitting on the couch staring at a wall while Sarah was picking up a mess Taylor had made. Jonathan heard them walking down the stairs and he turned around on the couch just in time to see Adrea let go of Hailee’s arm. She walked over to him and pointed at him.
“If she is pregnant, I’m going to kill you. You are a stupid little 15-year-old boy with problems. I hope you told your mom and dad, because if you haven’t they are going to find out in a few seconds. Think real hard next time you have an impure thought about my daughter and remember it’s not cool have to kids at 15!” Adrea said pointing at him, still as she grabbed the cordless phone and dialed up his parents cell phone number.
Jonathan looked at Adrea as she walked into the kitchen talking to either his mom or dad. He then looked at Hailee who hadn’t moved from the spot Adrea let her go at. His eyes drifted to Sarah who hadn’t been too happy to see him since he woke up Saturday morning.
