California Dreaming, by The Mammas and Poppas

San Diego was discovered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, when he landed here in 1542, to claim the land for Portugal. It wasn't until 1769 that the area would be settled by Father Junipero Serra, who journeyed from Spain in order to San Diego bay and skylineChristianize the local Indians. To accomplish his work, he founded the California Missions, of which San Diego was the first. After achieving independence in 1821, Mexico acquired San Diego, and part of present day California. That changed in 1849, when the United States proved victorious in the Mexican-American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848 ceded the areas of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas from Mexico to the United States. Today, San Diego is affectionately called "The Place Where California Began" or "The First Great City of the 21st Century".

On the north side of San Diego, in La Jolla, is the Children's Pool, which also goes by the name Casa. It was created by the Scripps family, to provide a safe Children's Pool in La Jollaarea for the children to play on the beach without fear of being caught in an undertow. A seawall was built to protect a small section of the beach. Over the years much of the area inside of the wall has filled with sand, eliminating the swimming. To deter use of the area further, has been the arrival of about fifty seals. A reserve for seals and sea lions is located offshore, at Seal Rock, yet for some unknown reason the seals prefer to lounge at Children's Pool instead.

The most popular attraction in San Diego, is the San Diego Zoo, located on the perimeter of Balboa Park. Animals of the San Diego ZooThe zoo's beginnings go back to the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and a collection of caged wild animals. Since then, the zoo has expanded to over a hundred acres and now includes over four hundred species of different animals. Special exhibits at the zoo are the panda bears, and the only white koala bear in the world. The zoo is self sufficient for the most, growing much of their own food supply for feeding the animals within the zoo, and even shipping some items out to other zoos across the country. There are actually more plant species within the park than animal species, and visitors marvel at the landscaping of the park, almost as much as they do for the animals. The zoo also has one of the most successful breeding programs in the world. It is not uncommon to see young animals in the afternoon that had just been born that morning or the day before.

Scripps Aquarium - Museum has gone through many changes since it's founding Scripps Aquarium - Museumin 1915, with nineteen tanks, the largest being 228 gallons. By 1951, a 2,000 gallon aquarium was add. The need for expansion burned and by 1992, the size of the facility was four times larger than when it started. The mission of the aquarium has been stated as "the commitment to marine research has been coupled with a desire to increase public understanding of the oceans and to interpret scientific endeavors for a lay audience."

Point Loma was the site that Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo landed in 1542, and Old Lighthouse at Point Lomadeclared the land for Spain. In 1855, the highest lighthouse in the country was erected at the top of the point, 442 feet above sea level. Unfortunately the extreme height served as a downfall for the lighthouse. During times of dense fog and low laying clouds, the light could not be seen, so the lighthouse was closed, and a new one was built on lower land beneath it. Today the old lighthouse is a museum, renovated and furnished in the same fashion as when it was Tidepools at Point Lomain operation. From outside the museum, visitors are awe struck by the view of the San Diego Bay and skyline, as they walk down to the monument that has been erected in honor of Cabrillo. Located down the road, are the tidepools. In them you may see flowery anemones, elusive octopai, spongy deadman's fingers, and various of other creatures. The hike down to the tidepools tends to be slippery, and care should be taken, but it is well worth it.
