February 27th - Time Management/Weigh In

So first things first - I had my weigh in and I lost 0.5kg.  Not as big as my losses over the past couple of weeks, but progress nonetheless.  I've stayed within points and done regular exercise so I'm still doing the right stuff.  I think I've eaten less fruit and veges in the past week or so, so I will make a concerted effort to keep them up.  I figure all that bulk has gotta help your metabolism.

Something I've been thinking about is time management.  Maybe because I don't have kids my time management can become extremely disorganised.  For a couple of years I was in the habit of getting out of bed as late as humanly possible in order to make it to work (make up put on in the car, no breakfast, dressing as I walked around the house).  I never took lunch to work with me, and I never planned what I was going to eat for dinner.  Lo and behold, my eating pattern was up shit creek.  No great suprises there.  Even once I wasn't living alone any more, that was still my entrenched pattern.

So, while I was on holidays recently, something I had loads of was TIME.  Time to plan, time to read, time to cook.  And it worked!!  I am more than certain that if I hadn't had that time off work, my weight loss plan wouldn't be motoring along as well as it is now.

I realised a couple of weeks into this whole deal that taking time to plan was a real key.  My partner and I discuss dinner part way through the day every day now.  When I shop, I mentally count up what meals I have covered.  And when I'm running out of stuff, I go to the shops again before I'm hit with a crisis and start thinking longingly about the lashings of lard at KFC.

So, if anyone is interested in my advice (I guess if you're reading this I will take the liberty of foisting it upon you) make time to plan.  Don't just plan - plan to plan.  By this I mean put time into your day that is set aside for planning or shopping or preparation - whatever is needed.  If that means re-arranging some of your family's timetable then that is what it takes.  As long as you say you can't find the time to plan, you will have more trouble sticking to a healthy eating plan and losing weight.

The good news is that the longer you stick to it, the less time needed because the ideas, point values, amounts needed etc become familiar to you.  Making the initial change however will take extra time, and I don't believe there is any way around that.  But anyway, why would you not want to invest time into something as important as feeling healthy?
