Season 2 of Polls

Should the Divisional records count?

I asked if the divisional records should count, and the popular vote was to include it in seeding for 2005.  Only 1/3 of the league voted, so it won't be binding, but I will bring it up at the next auction.

Should Divisional Records come into play?
1Yes - Should be the 1st playoff tiebreaker & determine next year's seeding
2Should only count to next year's seeding (starting 2005)
1No - keep it for fun only.

Should we give a cash prize to non-playoff teams

I asked if we should give the consolation bracket some kind of prize.  The votes were mixed with 50% wanting a prize and 50% not wanting a prize.  I'll bring it up again later on when we're discussing rule changes for 2005.

Should the Consolation Bracket winner have a cash prize? - ***note- starting next season only***
2Yes - $20 (cover their entrance fee)
2Yes - $10 (less than any of the championship tier teams can get)
4No - only the championship teams should receive any cash

Who had the worst luck?

It was a runaway win for the Chargers, who had bad luck not only from injuries but as of Week 13, have had the most points scored against them of all teams.

Which team had the worst luck with personnel?
1Quiet Storm (injuries to Stephen Davis, DeShawn Foster, Tatum Bell, Quincy Morgan, Chad Pennington)
0Marauders (Trade of Marty Booker, loss of Steve Smith in week 1; Ahman Green nicked up for 2-3 games)
4Chargers (injuries to Steve McNair, Chris Brown, Deuce McCalister, Peter Warrick, Dieon Branch)
2Hitmen (Corell Buckhalter injured immediately after the draft; injuries to Julius Jones, Deuce Staley, Todd Heap, Charles Rogers; LaDanian Tomlinson & Torry Holt nicked up)
1SmackDownSister (injuries to Dominick Davis, Kevin Jones, Brian Westbrook, Tyrone Calico)
0JYDs (their #1 player Priest Holmes out of the lineup for 3 weeks; Marshall Faulk splitting carries)
1StiffArms (injuries to Thomas Jones, Kellen Winslow & trade of Clinton Portis to Washington).

Should we upgrade to a full featured league?

Only 5 people voted (and one was me) so this is far from a decisive poll, but 80% were in favor of moving to an upgraded league.  I will do more research next year into leagues that might be able to accommodate all our needs to see what kind of deal we can get, and then propose it to the league when we know more.

Should we upgrade to the full league next year?
4Sure, $15 isn't a big deal, and I pay for Stat Tracker now anyway
1Nope, I don't want to put any more bucks into the pool.

Should we change the way that Defense is scored?

I asked if we should change the weighting on defenses.  The answer came back that we should keep the way we score defenses right now, which is nice & simple, so we won't make any changes..

Should we change Defensive Scoring?
2Yes - we need a change
5No - I like it the way it is.

Should we move to a rounded scoring system?

I asked: we currently score fantasy points to two digits (e.g. 87 rushing yards = 4.35 fantasy points).  Usually these are rounded in chunks (heavily downwards) so 87 rushing yards would equal 4 fantasy points and 99 rushing yards would also equal 4 fantasy points.  The advantage to using rounded numbers is that it (1) gives an easier-to-relate-to number and (2) can result in ties (which is cool).  The advantage to the fractional method is that it gives a better distribution of fantasy points.  What do you think we should use next year?

Answer: Pretty clear everyone likes the exact digits.

Should we have exact digit scores or rounded scores?
8Exact Digits (as we have now)

Setting a new benchmark for futility

It looks like the Quiet Storm is going to have to wait a while to get their first win, as most people think it will happen on Week 12 vs. SDS

When will the Quiet Storm's losing streak end?
0Week 7 vs. the Marauders  (Marauders won by about 11 points)
5Week 12 vs. SmackDownSIster
0Sometime in 2005 (next season)

3Sometime after the Boston Red Sox win the World Series.

Ending a losing streak

When asked which team would end their loosing streak first, the vote was for the Bucks (although someone voted after the game was played.... cheater).  In the end, it was the Bucks that ended their bad streak first.  Of special note was that nobody voted for the commissioner's tea.

Which will be the first team to get a freakin' win?
2Bills (lost to the Jets)
0Dolphins (lost to the Pats)
3Bucks (beat the Saints)
149ers (lost to the Cardinals)

1Patriots (won 31-17)

Those losing teams

The once lofty 49ers were the team that most viewed as the poorest team in 2004 so far.  Of the six 0-2 teams that played this week, five of them lost.  The only one that didn't was Houston who played 0-2 KC.

Which is the worst 0-2 team?
1Miami Dolphins (lost their 3rd game)
3San Francisco 49ers (lost their 3rd game)

How's the team?

Following the auction, I asked this question.  Most teams think they have a good shot at the final (50% of the vote).  Only 2 think they are already out of the running.

How do you think the draft went for you?
1Thanks for your $20 SUCKA!!!
3A few good waiver moves, and I'll lead my division
1I should be competitve

Season 1 of Polls

Rule changes at the end of the season

The decision was to equally weight the regular season and post season performance for the ballot.

Should there be ballots based on placement as well as toilet-bowl performance?  This year we had the post-season results determine how many ballots the bottom four teams would receive in the rookie draft.  This was to prevent tanking, and also to give the post-season some meaning for the non-playoff teams.  Now that we've gone through a year, should we keep this up?  The options are:
5Yes - Equal weighting for regular season & post season performance (the worst team would get 4 draft ballots plus what they get in the post-season.  For example, SmackDownSister would get 5 ballots - 4 for "worst place" and 1 for "worst place in the playoffs"; the Gryphons would get 5 also (2 for "3rd worst place" and 3 for "runner up in the playoffs").
2No - only regular season (like it was last year)  (the worst team gets 4 draft ballots)
2No - only post season (like it was this year) (the playoff winner gets 4 draft ballots).

The cap penalties will be retained as they are now (last option)

Should we charge $1 to release a restricted free agent (i.e. the old salary doesn't matter, but there is always a $1 cap hit to drop a player)?  This year we have changed the rules considerably around player drops.  The question is what to do in the period after the deadline where salary affects next year, and more specifically with the restricted free agents.
0Very Strict
  • Players released between week 1-10 have half-salary penalty for the current year
  • Players released between week 10 - the end of the season have Half Salary Penalty applied for all of the current year and all of next year
  • Players released after the end of the season and before the rookie draft will have a half-salary penalty applied to the next year (even if they are RFAs).
0Strict
  • Players released between week 1 and the playoffs have half-salary penalty for the current year
  • Players released between playoffs and the end of the season have Half Salary Penalty applied for all of the current year and all of next year
  • Players released after the end of the season and before the rookie draft will have a half-salary penalty applied to the next year (even if they are RFAs).
1Average
  • Players released between week 1-playoffs have half-salary penalty for the current year
  • Players released between playoffs and the end of the season have Half Salary Penalty applied for all of the current year and all of next year
  • Players under contract released after the end of the season and before the rookie draft will have a half-salary penalty applied to the next year.
  • RFAs released during that time will have a $1 penalty.
1Very Lenient
  • Players released between week 1-playoffs have half-salary penalty for the current year
  • Players released between playoffs and the end of the season have Half Salary Penalty applied for all of the current year and all of next year
  • Players under contract released after the end of the season and before the rookie draft will have a half-salary penalty applied to the next year.
  • RFAs released during that time will have a $1 penalty unless it is a person picked up in the last 2 weeks (i.e. you add an injury replacement during the playoffs and drop that person, you will not be charged).
3As it is now
  • Players released between week 1-playoffs have half-salary penalty for the current year
  • Players released between playoffs and the end of the season have Half Salary Penalty applied for all of the current year and all of next year
  • Players under contract released after the end of the season and before the rookie draft will have a half-salary penalty applied to the next year.
  • RFAs released during that time will have no penalty.

By a narrow victory, we will be changing most points to include the post season.  This gives ALL teams an added incentive to start their best lineup throught the season

Should the "most points" award count points until the end of the regular season only, or should it include points earned in the post season as well?
4Only the regular season (as it is now)

Near unanimous decision - we will keep the 3 divisions.

Should we keep the 3-divisions or just lump everyone together?  How did this year work for you?  Especially looking at two websites?  The three divisions allow us to maintain a balanced schedule (i.e. last year's strongest teams will play each other more often, and the weakest teams will play each other more often).  It also allows most teams a better opportunity to make the playoffs (i.e. even the "weak" teams in the XFL can make the playoffs without having to beat the records of the teams in the NFL or CFL).  However, we MUST maintain a separate website to do that.  The alternative is to eliminate the 3-divisions and use only Yahoo, meaning the schedule and playoffs will be up to Yahoo and we would be able to use the Yahoo match-ups and stuff.  It would be easier for me (as the web-administrator) but would not maintain as much equality in the league (I want to give even the weakest teams an opportunity to get to the playoffs, which the Yahoo site would not).
7Keep the three division alignment.
1Eliminate the division alignment.

Regular Season MVP Award

Ahman Green was the regular season MVP with 6 of a possible 12 votes (only 1 abstained).  Ahman was the difference for the Marauders from a playoff team and a middle-of the pack team this year.

The criteria I used for this poll is:

  1. Must have played for a team in the top playoff bracket
  2. Must be among the top 5 players at his position
  3. Must have been one of the top scoring players for his team
  4. Must have played on the team for the majority of the year
Who was the regular season MVP of the league?
2Steve McNair - Rynos  Averaged 10.9 Fantasy Points per game, was the #2 rated QB over the regular season (2.7 points per game behind Daunte Cullpepper, who played 2 less games than McNair).
1Chad Johnson - Assassins  Averaged 8.5 Fantasy Points per game, was the #3 Wide Receiver in the league (behind Randy Moss & Torry Holt)
6Ahman Green - Marauders  Averaged 14 Fantasy Points per game; was the #2 RB behind Priest Holms who averaged 15.7 points per game.
0Deuce McCalister - Chargers  Averaged 10.8 Fantasy Points per game, and single-handedly carried the Chargers team over weeks 11-13.
0Tony Gonzalez - Rynos  Averaged 6.4 points per game for the season, but 7.7 over the past 5 weeks. Was the #1 Tight End in the league
1Mike Vanderjact - Marauders  Averaged 11.2 points per game and was the #1 kicker in the league. Only scored less than double digit points 4 times during the season.
0New England Defense - Assassins  Averaged 13.1 points per game outscoring the next closest (Baltimore) by 20%.
1Write in - Priest Holms - Tight Ends  Screw your criteria - Priest is the absolute #1 fantasy player out there and should be the MVP.

 Steve McNair  (1,978 yards, 13 TDs, 3 Ints, 3 rushing TDs = 11.5 / week)

Miami Defense (14 sacks, 8 takeaways, 1 safety & 1 blocked kick with 104 points allowed = 11.6 per week)
The Phatback's lucky rabbit's foot (-10 points for their opponents)

Which tandem is the best brother combination in football?
Payton and Eli Manning (Eli will be lighting it up in a year or two)
Obafemi and Brendon Ayanbadejo (both on the Dolphins)

Poll #7

This was clear enough after one week, so I can take it down.  The vast majority say that the Commissioner should NEVER fix line-ups (which is as I have been doing this year).  Next Commissioner poll in 2 weeks.

Should the Commissioner fix lineups? So far this year we've had a few games decided because lineups were not submitted.  What I'm wondering is if you (the league) wants me (as commissioner) to fix those lineups.  I wouldn't do this to help the negligent team as much as to protect the rest of the league.  Usually this isn't a problem, but in case it happens again, should I change the lineups?

Note: I'm NOT talking about picking up free agents or moving players to IR.  Only activating players that are playing to play in place of a player that is on a bye.  For example - if Jerry Rice is on a bye but in the lineup and Keenan McCardell is playing but on the bench, I would activate McCardell.  If Corey Dillion is injured but the Bengals are playing and he is in the lineup, I would not make a change.

What do you think?

 Never!
 Only in the regular season
 Only in the playoffs
 Always!

Poll #6

With a landslide ...um... victory?  Donnovan McNabb is voted into the Hall of Shame.  Just a pathetic result from a guy who is so good

Which QB do you think should be entered into the Hall of Shame based on his past week's performance?
Donnovan McNabb (64 yards, 1 Int, -1 rushing yard = 0.23 fantasy points)
Drew Brees (74 yards passing, 1 Int = 0.48 fantasy points)
Rich Gannon (58 yards passing, 1 Int = 0.16 fantasy points in ONLY ONE HALF!).
Abbot & Costello in Detroit - Harrington & McMahon combined for 81 yards and 3 Ints = -1.38 fantasy points
Crystal Chris Chandler (149 yards, 2 Ints, 2 pt conversion = 2.98 fantasy points)  Option removed - Crystal Chris is too good to be on this list

Poll #5

The tribe has spoken.  Although 4 out of the 7 votes were for keeping it as "doubtful or out", the other 3 all voted for the same option (#3).  So next year we will continue to allow up to 2 players to be placed on injured reserve, but only if they are definitely out.

So far we've been going with 2 IR slots.  These have mostly been used to hold players that were out either for the season or for a few weeks.  Now I'm wondering (as are others) if we should continue to have 2 IR slots, or if it should just be 1.  The other thing is what status should a player be to qualify for IR?  Should it be likely they won't play (as it is now - out or doubtful) or should they definitely be out?

I will be changing one rule starting next year:  That if a player's situation changes outside of our guidelines (either out or out/doubtful) then they can not be kept on the IR.  This year they can be kept on the IR until they play in a game.

What should the IR policy be next year?

Keep the current rule (2 slots, player must be listed as Doubtful or Out); if the player's status changes to questionable or better, they must be activated immediately.
Cut down to one slot (player must be listed as Doubtful or Out); if the player's status changes to questionable or better, they must be activated immediately.
Two slots and the players must be listed as Out to be eligible; if the player's status changes to doubtful or better, they must be activated immediately.
