5646. Edward COWELL 1 was born about 1622 in <Of Portsmouth, Rock., Nh>. He died on 31 Oct 1677 in (est Adm), Portsmouth, Rock., Nh. He married Agnes HARVEY.

5647. Agnes HARVEY 1 was born about 1626 in <Of Portsmouth, Rock., Nh>. She died in Dec 1681 in Portsmouth, Rock., Nh.

5666. John HEARD 1 was born on 29 Nov 1612 in Kittery, York, Maine. He was christened on 29 Nov 1612 in St Pancras, Chichester, Sussex, Eng.. He died 2 on 17 Jan 1688 in Kittery, York, Maine. He was buried in Kittery, York, Me. He married Elizabeth HULL in 1643 in Of, Northleigh, Exeter, Eng.

"John Heard, early of Sturgeon Creek, in Kittery, Me., was of the Dover combination in 1640; in 16[3?]2 had grant of land near the Great Hill, where he built the garrison saved by Elder William Wentworth in the massacre of 1689, and died 17 January 1688-9." (Wentworth Gen., p. 160 footnote).

"John (Heard), master carpenter, never mariner nor captain. Age unkn., only as his w. was b. ab. 1628. In 1647 fined for calling Godfrey old knave and criticizing Capt. Champernowne; in 1650 he had lately been liv. on Champernowne's Isl. in Kit., and was buying lands in York. Appar. he had built a ho. on Champernowne Isl. and on not getting his pay had burnt it; judgm. of Ct. Oct. 1650 that he replace as good and as large a ho. His deed from Mr. Hooke, 18 July 1650, recites that he had already built and fenced there. He had left York in in June 1648, (Y.D. 3.71) when he sold his York ho. to to John Parker, carpenter, of Marblehead, which may imply a prior acquaint., but was back again in 1651 (Gr. j. 1651-2). In Dover, where he was perman. settled by 1654, he was much relied on by Major Waldron. ... Will 2 Apr. 1687, d. 17 Jan. 1688-9. His w. Elizabeth, dau. of Rev. Jos. Hull ... is commen. by Revs. Cotton Mather and John Pike; d. 30 Nov. 1706. ...." (From photocopies from a register sorted by family. Savages? Pp. 322.)

In contrast to the above, The Heard-Hurd Genealogy 1610-1987, by Candage and Peak, appears to speak of the John Heard who lived at Cochecho and built the Heard Garison, and call him "Captain." The writers of this genealogy believe that the burning of Champernowne's house was probably accidental, though they cite only the fact that John Heard returned to court as a plaintiff in what appeared to be the same issue. The Hull family genealogist states that our John Heard was a carpenter but never a captain. (hullfamilyassociation.org as accessed 3 March 07)

"The will of Capt. John Heard ... was never legally proved, that is, not by the regular and prescribed methods:
"At a Council held at Portsmouth, the will of John Heard of Cocheco dated April 2, 1687, was offered to be proved. All witnesses to the will had been killed by the Indians before the executor of sd. will could have them sworn in, and there being no legal authority at that time in the province to otherwise allow or approve of the Probate of Wills, the following evidence was sworn --- William Vaughn Esq., John Gerrish Esq., and John Hamm of Cocheco (57 Yrs) said they were acquainted with the witnesses to sd. will, viz. Richard Walderne, Abraham Lee, and John Evans, had seen them write their names and verily believed the names were their own handwriting. The Governor and Council therefore declaired the sd. will to be proved and allowed. (Portsmouth May 29, 1702) His Excellency, J. Dudly, Chas. Story, Sec't." (Heard - Hurd Genealogy 1610-1987, pp. xi-xii).

5667. Elizabeth HULL 1 was born in 1627/1628 in Northleigh, Devenshire, England. She died on 30 Nov 1706 in Northleigh, Devonshire, England Or Usa. [Parents]

Came with her family to Massachusetts at age 7. (See immigrantships.net)

Elizabeth, dau. of Rev. Jos. Hull ... is commen. by Revs. Cotton Mather and John Pike; d. 30 Nov. 1706. ...." (From photocopies from a register sorted by family. Savages? Pp. 322.)

Her viewpoint on the Cocheco massacre is given in Rev Cotton Mather's "Magnalia
Christi Americana," pp. 591-592, which is quoted at length in Heard-Hurd
Genealogy 1610-1987, pp. ix-x. Death date given in Rev John Pike's journal, as
cited in the Genealogy.

"HFAm #6, Elizabeth Hull, who married John Heard, has some erroneous information on Elizabeth’s husband. There were two John Heards and Elizabeth did not marry the one designated as Captain John Heard, of Kittery, York County, Maine, who was a sea captain, and married Isabel [—?—]. Elizabeth married the John Heard who was a carpenter of Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire. Also the parents of Elizabeth’s husband, John, were not Luke and Sarah (Wyatt) Heard. Elizabeth Hull Heard’s husband’s parents are unknown." (From hullfamilyassociation.org as accessed 3 March 2007)

5672. William WENTWORTH 1 was born on 8 Jun 1584 in Alford, Lincolnshire, England. He was christened 2 on 8 Jun 1584 in St. Peter at Gowts, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. He died in Mar 1689/1690 in Alford, Lincolnshire, , England. He married Susannah CARTER on 28 Nov 1614 in Alford, Lincoln, England. [Parents]

Lived in Alford, Lincolnshire, England from 1614 to 1620, and in Rigsby in 1621. (Wentworth Gen., pp. 63-4).

From John Wentworth, Wentworth Genealogy, English and American, pp 63-70 of
"English Genealogy." Parts of the descent of the New Hampshire Wentworths from
Reginald the Saxon of 1086 is circumstantial, even if very convincing:

This William Wentworth was found to be residing in the region where the will of
his presumed father, Christopher Wentworth, was proved (Alford, Lincoln,
England). This will mentions an oldest son, William. The
presumption is strengthened by the existence among William's sons of
Christopher, a name not found elsewhere in the above author's apparently
extensive research on the Wentworth family. Grandson named after grandfather.

William's family moved from Alford to near-by Rigsby, as evidenced by the burial
of his son Christopher there, and William appears to have sold his interest
in an unexpired lease in near-by Bilsby by 10 April 1636.

Bilsby was Rev. John Wheelwright's vicarage from 1623 to at least 1631;
Wheelwright and others left for New England in 1636. Both William and his son
of the same name disappear from this corner of Lincolnshire after 1636. A
William Wentworth appears in 1639 with Wheelwright's company in Exeter, in what
became New Hampshire. This presumably was William's son.

5673. Susannah CARTER 1 was born in 1592 in Wells, Linconshire, England. She died in Alford, ?, Lincoln, England. [Parents]

5808. Constant SOUTHWORTH [image] was born 1 in 1615 in Leyden, Holland. He died on 10 Mar 1678/1679. He married Elizabeth COLLIER on 2 Nov 1637 in Duxbury, Mass.. [Parents]

"Constant came to Plymouth in 1628, probably on the While Angel, and a contemporary account shows that the Plymouth Company paid twenty shillings for his passage and four shillings, eight pence per week for eleven weeks for his food (MHS Collections, 3rd Series, 1:199). It is assumed that he, and his brother Thomas, who must have come over later, lived with their mother and step-father, Governor Bradford. The Southworth family was apparently of gentle birth ....

"... In his will, dated 27 February 1678/79, inventory 15 March 1678/79, he named his wife Elizabeth; son Edward; son Nathaniel; son William; daughter Mercy Freeman; daughter Alice Church; daughter Mary Alden; daughter Elizabeth Southworth, provided she did not marry William Fobes; daughter Priscilla Southworth; grandson Constant Freeman; cousin Elizabeth Howland; and his brother Thomas. Constant held many important posts, including treasurer, Assistant, and ensign in the Duxbury Military company. Samuel G. Webber, A Genealogy of the Southwards (Southards) Descendants of Constant Southworth (Boston, 1905), is a good family history, though insufficiently documented." (Plymouth Colony - Its History & People 1620-1691, pp. 355-356).

"The son was educated by his step-father [Governor William Bradford], and in 1633 was one of the early settlers of Duxbury, which he represented in the legislature, becoming also commissioner for the united colonies, governor of the Kennebec plantation, and assistant governor of Plymouth. He was the supposed author of the supplement to "New England's Memorial," by his cousin, Nathaniel Morton (Cambridge, 1669). He bequeathed to one of his daughters two beds and furniture, "provided she do not marry William Fobbes, but if she do, then to have five shillings." The daughter preferred the latter alternative." See famousamericans.net

"In 1675, “The Sixteen Shilling Purchase” was made by Constant Southworth and John Tompson (for £33) from the Indian sachems of Middleborough. The largest purchase of land in that town, it included what is now the town of Lakeville running to the Dartmouth line." (From Alden.org)
